The GDCI junior soccer team will have
coaching help from Ed Smythe, who is the
coach of the Goderich Oldtimers team.
Coach Darryl Carpenter feels fortunate
to have Smythe's valuable assistance.
However, his help will only last until May
15, when Smythe leaves for Scotland.
Last year, Carpenter was a 'part-time
teacher at GDCI and was unable to spend
as much time with the team as he would
have liked. He now works full-time and
plans to stay close to the team.
• • The team finished fourth last year and
lost early in the semi-finals. .
Senior Coach Richard Madge, will have
to find replacemehts for all but one of his
starting forwards.
Only eight players return to the team
that beat Exeter last year to win the con-
ferance championship.. One of the players
who is returning, however, is the league',s
top scorer, Todd Graham,;,
According to Madge, a nuinber of good
half -backs and full-backs are coming out
Of the junior ranks. He said the team looks
strong at those positions.
Both the junior and senior teams open at
home April 22 against Seaforth.
Juergen Schulz, the teams lone return-
ing forward, said Exeter •and St. Marys
should provide the toughest competition
this year. Madge said Scott Garrow, a fine
athelete and rookie of the year for St.
Marys Lincolns junior B hockey team, will
play for the St Marys soccer team and they
are supposed to be strong.
The senior•team carries a 15 man roster
and 22 players are trying to earn a. spot.•
Carpenter, however, said the junior
team will keep all the players who try out.
"Players cut themselves. They look
around and see how everyone is playing
and they know if they have a chance," said
Carpenter. .
Only five players are returning to the
junior team and 31. of the team are new to
GDCI, he said. ,
Carpenter likes to., keep •,a marginal
. player on theteam rater than cutting him,
because he won't get discouraged and it
gives him a oportunity to play and
improve. _
Both 'Sratford teams, he said, should be
• the teams to beat this year and the juniors
are looking to improve in the standings.'
Exams and bad weather have caused
