'Mind alert,
women lear
of y relaxed' relieves stress,
at stress management worksho
BY LOU -ANN HOPE
"Stress is inevitable. To do our best
work we all need to generate some tension
– some stress. Up to a certain point, the
more stress you have the better you per-
form in work and in personal life.
However, chronic stress, day in and day
out, can take its toll on an individual's
health and productivity. The important
thing is to learn how to control stress, cope
with it and turn it to our personal
advantage."
About 35 women from Huron County at-
tended a one -day Stress. Management -
Assertiveness Workshop on Thursday to
hear Leslie Rose of the Canadian Institute
of Stress in Toronto speak on stress and
how' it can be controlled.' The workshop,
held at the Huronview Auditorium in C1in‘
ton, was sponsored by the Huron County
Health Unit.
WHAT IS STRESS
Stress is a set of physical, chemocal and
mental reactions within each of us. It is
your body's response to any demand plac-
ed on it, whether threatening or •
pleasurab.,e. .
The response to stress is activated by the
body's •automatic nervous system. Once
set off, it .produces more stress hormones
which -give the person more stress energy.
Signs of an increase in the body's stress
level vary from a pounding of the heart
and dryness of the mouth and throat to im- •
'pulsive behaviour and trembling. How
powerful a person's stress response is
depends on how the person makes sense of
or explains the new• situation to himself
which depends on the personality of the in-
dividual and ' how much support the in-
dividual has around him.
Rose, who said stress management and
assertiveness ." g.o hand -iii -hand",. noted
that having awareness of your self and the
"ability to !be. in control 'of, your percep-
tion"• were keys to unlocking the mysteries
' of stress and learning how to control it.
"The more you know yourself, the more
flexibility you would have to move through
situations that would otherwisestifle you,"
he said.
'Rose, whose -talk focused on' negative
'stress, that being stress that can make you
feel tired, depressed, and even ill, said the'
key -to ridding the body, of stress lay in '•
Leslie Rose
undergoing the 'relaxation •response'.
• The 'relaxation response', as -Rose
described, is a state of body when stress
hormones are deactivated and healing hor-
mones are activated; •when the mind is
alert and focused ard the body is relaxed.
There are three ways -to get to the 'relax-
ation response', according to Rose. They
are: breathing deeply,. loosening. the
• muscles, and focusing the mind; which
leaves you in an almost hypnotic state.
• Prior to entering this state, Rose sug-
• gested making a positive affirmation
which would be repeated during the relax-.
ation response. • '
"Any statement that brings you into; the
present is overpowering," he..said, adding '
that the simplest of all affirmations .is '1
• am a good person'. • •
Rose advised undergoing the relaxation
response twice a day, .once in the morning-".
and again before going to sleep.
'.'It becomes like an active loop. It
reminds you of what's important."
Rose also said that with affirmations
carnes the potential for growth. He added
that growth is obtained through the plann-
ing process which involves five steps: set-
ting the goal, defining the obstacles, using
resources to overcome obstacles, choosing
the most effective resource, and
evaluating the method.
ASSERTIVENESS
"When you are assertive, you feel good,
feel strong and feel involved," Rose said,
adding the first step in learning to be 'ag-
gressive' is that of talking and introducing
yourself.
Being aggressive does not mean you
have to be overtly strong or pushy, in-
stead, as Rose discussed, it means not be-
ing afraid to speak when you' have
something to say.
"When you become assertive, 'life
becomes more of an on -the -edge game."
' In discussing aggressiveness, Rose
spoke about people in groups.
"Different personalities take on dif-
ferent roles, In groups, it is nice to pay at-
tention to the rules." •
The only way the group gets• identity and
strength is if there. is co-operation among
the various personalities in the group,
Rose said. .•
"Each person has a responsibility to
make the time valuable; to give respect to
what this group is getting at and to its iden-
tity," he said,
EFFECTIVE LISTENING
Rose also noted that effective listening,
.a trait which many people do not have, is a
key to establishing trusting relationships.
The key to effective listening is to go for
the core or essence of the discussion and
'mirror that discussion, Rose said. • He ex-
plained that by following the speaker and
re -wording what he has Bard, helps the per-
son make a''decis.ion.
Effective listening techniques include in-
sight, interpretation, feedback, mirror of
thoughts and actions, non-judgemental,
body language and maintaining direct eye
contact.
','People who don't want to be
manipulated or who don't want people too
near thein, will stop talking . or hold
something hack" if effective • listening
techniques are not used.
