Rev. Robert U. Ball,
North Street United Church
They looked at rile as though I was daft.
Kids have a way of doing that.
it was the second day of a long week end in
March. It was a.first class day, as had'been
the week preceding. The suri•shone brightly,
the' snow was disappearing, ig, the lake :still
frozen.
There was a note of freshness in the air
that only Spring can bring, And the warmth
of the sun made both body and soul glad to
be alive.
All I said was: "It isn't fair." 'l'hat's when
I found uut if anyone was listening. "What
isn't fair'.'" '.All this", I said, as I began to
list the good things about the day, the place,
the weather, the hot tea and muffins by the
lake.
I figured it this way. When we have a long
week -end and it rains: when we feel that
others around us seem to have advantages

over us; when in the midst of corrrfort, sur-
rounded by family and friends, I which we
take so much for granted) we are faced with
some disappointment, we so easily say it
isn't fair. Then why should we not consider
it unfair, when all is well'.'
But somehow this is the way we are.
In many ways life is unfair. One look at
the global conununity and it becomes ob-
vious. The things that make for health, pro-
sperity and peace, are confined to a small
minority of which we are a -part. We eat
while many starve. We -are free from the
daily threats of war, while many live in fear.
We have community and friends, while
1mtely
many walk alone. Food, medicine, and the
good life have all been dropped into our
lives. And in spite of the perceived needs
that each of us sees for ourself, deep in our
hearts we know that we have blessings, and
it isn't fair.
This is Easter week. And we are reminded
particularly of the Crucifixion of Jesus. The
Cross is not fair• It is the symbol of the
values of the world set against the purposes
of God.
Fortunately we live on this side of the
Resurrection event. And we live therefore
with the capacity to approach life with a dif-
ferent perspective of what is victory, what is
defeat.
By His life we are redeemed, saved by
grace. It is the gift of God. His Victory can
be ours in spite of the normal patterns of this
..life. It certainly isn't fair. But, for those who
believe, there is only worship and praise,
and thanksgiving in all things.

Matt. '27:36. "And sitting drawn,
they watched Him there."
Dile wonders what 'was in the minds Of
those who watched the cross. Jesus'
disciples, of course, were not there. They
we're w'iliing to fight for Him but to Sur—
render was another thing. Had they, prayed
in Gethsemane, tlu'v alight have reacted,
differently, but having failed there, they
failed again when the test came. Only John -
returried and stayed near the women.
The wiomeh were there weeping but there
was nothing they could du: The. might of
Rome had spoken. •
The soldiers whiled away the time gariabl-
ing. They .were•required to stay until it was"
over. .
But renturioh, as he watched, saw the.
('glory of God. He marvelled at the way
-Jesus endured the cross, despising the
shame. An aura of the heavenlies was upon
thin. As he had prayed in Gethsemane, an
angel carne and strengthened Him —, surely
not a physical strengthening, because he fell
under the weight of the cross, but a spiritual
strength enabling •Him to, instead of
"writhing in anguish and pain'., show forth
God's gloryllin quiet rnajest,'.
Not everyone saw this. •
The people ,whu•passed. by didn't because
they railed on Him.

'of their -reaction. They were waiting to

manifested itself again in the resurrection.
