Environment Minister .Jing Bradley
recently took Ontario's figAt against acid
rain direjtly to the United States in a day -
'long public speaking blitz aimed at reaching
the American public through the American
media.
Mr. Bradley appeared on the Today Show
on NB(', which reaches an estimated' au-
dience of 40 Million viewers. He said it is im-
portant to inform the Arncric•an public of the
real clnnlage. done by acid rain to (ur
forests.•lakes and streams on both sides of
the Canada - US border.
Mr. Bradley also took Ontario's case to
the New York Times, the Christian Science
:4lonitor. and Backpacker Magazine.. As
welt. he appeared on the International Hour
of the ('able News Network I CNN) .
In a(lditii n, Mr. Bradley made the trip to
support those in Congress who are fighting
for meaningful legislation to cut' acid rain
ernissiohs in the U.S.
. Major Highway Links to he Completed

complete the four large sl.ction of Highway

nounced that the four lane section of
Highway 403 between Ancusterand Brant-
ford will 0151) be completed. .
The -combined projects are expected to -
cost $88 million. In each case, tht' announce-

traffic in the Golden .Horseshoe and to and
from 1''eterborough. As well, four lane ac-
cess to Peterborough and area will further

Mr. Fulton said the announcement ad-
dresses the need for inlprc)\J(I roads in both
arras, not .,just to serve other manufac-
turers, but to get goods 1.0 market, and to
safer and efficiently receive goods from
out of town.

• geriatrics and gerontology will be establish-
ed at McYlaster University in Hamilton.
C'ollege's' and Universities Minister,
Gregory, Sorbara and Minister for Senior
rtizens' Affairs, Ron Van Horne announced'
(1 $12 million grant to establish the new
department.
By the turn of the century, about 1.4
million people in Ontario Will be 65 years of
age or older. Recognizing this dramatic
change in the make-up of our society, the
department of geriatrics and gerontology
will enhance teaching in undergraduate and
graduate health professional education 'pro-
grams and provide continuing education for
practising professions.
As well, the McMaster department will he
involved in research related to the elderly
and provide focus for the development of
clinical services in conjunction with the
regional geriatric unit and related. institu-
tional community health and social service
agencies.
Mr. Van Horne said this $12 million grant,
to he provided over a 10 -year period, fulfills
a commitment set out in the white paper,
"A New Agenda," he released last .June.
The -creation of the department -of geriatrics
and gerontology is another step in the
development of a comprehensive system of
services to help seniors live active and in-
dependent lives and significantly reduce
preventable., and unnecessary
institutionalization.
