Algorail is owned by Algoma Central !Marine which has a fleet .of 18 ships. C'ollege's' and Universities Minister, Gregory, Sorbara and Minister for Senior rtizens' Affairs, Ron Van Horne announced' (1 $12 million grant to establish the new department. By the turn of the century, about 1.4 million people in Ontario Will be 65 years of age or older. Recognizing this dramatic change in the make-up of our society, the department of geriatrics and gerontology will enhance teaching in undergraduate and graduate health professional education 'pro- grams and provide continuing education for practising professions. As well, the McMaster department will he involved in research related to the elderly and provide focus for the development of clinical services in conjunction with the regional geriatric unit and related. institu- tional community health and social service agencies. Mr. Van Horne said this $12 million grant, to he provided over a 10 -year period, fulfills a commitment set out in the white paper, "A New Agenda," he released last .June. The -creation of the department -of geriatrics and gerontology is another step in the development of a comprehensive system of services to help seniors live active and in- dependent lives and significantly reduce preventable., and unnecessary institutionalization.
