spot in world
performance
Two reactors at the Bruce Nuclear Power
Development 'hold the top spots rrl• the ,world
for nuclear reactor performance, according
to.. a preliminary survey' published in a
nuclear industry newsletter.
The Nucleonics Week -curve. ,ut that
Bruce units three and for ranked
number orie and two in lifetime perfor-
mance with capacity factors of 87.6 and 87
per cent respectively,
Bruce unit five is ranked fourth with a
capacity rating of 86.4 per cent since it was -
declared in service in March of 1985. Bruce
unit five was Ontario Hydro's top performer
in 1986 with a capacity factor of 97.3 per
cent. That was impressive enough for sixth
spot among the 236 reactors included in the
survey.
Nucleonics Week is a weekly newsletter
about the nuclear industry. Capacity factors
are a measure of the, amount of energy ac-
tually produced, compared to a yeat•'s pro-
duction at full power (100 per cent).
EMPLOYEE SAFETY RECORD
Ontario Hydro received top marks for
employee safety last year.
For the second year in a row there were no
'on-the-job accidents resulting in death or
_permanent.. .permanent, disability to any Hydro
employee.
Last year's performance matches 1985's,
where the same result was achieved for the
first .time in almost 40 years.
RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS
Ontario Hydro met ' with emergency
response officials from across the province
this month for discussions about the
transportation of radioactive materials.
The seminar was part of an education pro-
gram begun by Ontario Hydro in 1979 for
fire, ambulance and police officials, Over 60
• people.. attended the all -day workshop held
at the utility's conference centre in
Orangeville.
Participants were presented with a field
guide on the topic and were shown the latest
detection and response equipment used to
handle any emergency involving radlioac-
tive materials.
ENERGY DEMAND UP
Total customer use of electricity in
February was 10.7 billion kilowatt-hours, up
2.1 per cent from last year.
The peak demand for the month was
reached February 16 at 20.4 million
kilowatts, up 4.7 per cent from the same
month last year. The amount of electricity
. used on this (dy set an all-time record at 451
million kilowatt-hours.
• EXPORT REVENUES
In February,,tue utility sold an estimated
921 million kilowatt-hours of electricity to
the United States, earning Ontario
customers almost $10 million in revenues.
Sales of electricity were higher than usual
because of the increase in U.S. oil prices.
Northeastern utilities in the U.S. rely on oil-
' fired generation as --a fid t ree f►f eteetrieity-
The higher coil prices get, the more attrac-
tive irnports from Canada become.
