onference sh w on the future of work
to be aired on TVO Wednesday, April 2
For the past 55 years, some of the
brightest and most ,concerned people from
Canada and abroad have gathered each
summer in a quiet lakeside setting in
Geneva Park, Lake Couchiching,•The event
- the Couchiching Conference, a forum to
discuss issues vital to us all. This past
August, the topic was the future of work:
how we'll pass our days in the decades to
come. The keynote speaker was interna-
tional cybernetics consultant and author
Stafford Beer.
On Wednesday, April 29 at 9:00 p.m.,
viewers canshare the conference highlights
and insights, as well as reactions from
astute panelists. The Couchiching C'on-
ferepce: The• Future of Work, a two-hour
special, looks at work's impact on us as in-
dividuals and as a society. The program will
present several conference addresses
divided thematically into three sections 1,
as well as panel discussions arising from
these ideas, hosted by TVO,moderator Mike
tvic>,vianus.
Stafford Beer will present the introduc-
tory address, offering his vision of -work in
the future -- when there will actually be less
work. Materialism is over, he claims: we
must shift to a more "spiritual paradigm."
The second panel features speakers
Robert A. Ferchat, president of Northern
Telecom Canada Limited, and Laurell Rit-
chie, vice-president of the Confederation of
Canadian Unions. Ferchat says we• must
grasp the opportunities inherent in
technology and thereby become winners -.or
the "techno-elite" ••-- in our increasingly
competitive society. Ritchie, whose address
follows, opposes this approach, warning of
the costs of the competitive model. .
The final group of speakers -discuss the
psychological aspects of work, and the rela-
tionship to self-image. Paesenters in this
section are Dr. Vivan Rakoff, director,
Clarke Institute of Psychiatry; June
Callwood, doted journalist, feminist, and TV
\%
it
uruadcastei . unu author Ttntuthy E'ufiiley,
whose works include The Wars and Famous
last Words.
The studio panelists who, in various com-
binations, follow and react to each group of
speeches are Hazel Henderson, futurist and
economic policy an;(1\st: Arnold' H. Packer,
senior fellow at the Iludson Institute: Keith
Newton, director of Labour Market
Research at the Econotnic• l ouncil of
Canada: David H. Flaherty, professor of
history and law fit the University of Western
Ontario: and Ur. Rosalie Bertell, scientist
and environmental -health expert.
In the final segment, all five studio
panelists, joined by Stafford Beer, Will par-
ticipate in a special presentation titled
"Beyond ('ouchiching," in whit•h they will
examine visions of work in the future, and
discuss how w•e can hest prepare for these
-changes.
T'ranscr'ipts of the conference addresses
broadcast 'on the program are available
from 'l.'VOntariu for $2.
