MR. BERT BENSON BRADFORD
Mr. Bert Benson Bradford of Goderich
died at Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital on Tuesday, March 31 at the age of
84.
Burrs in Londesboro on February 25, 1903,
he was the son of the late George Wm. Brad-
ford and the former Harriet Elizabeth
Riley.
Mr. Bradford was a self-employed but-
cher until his retirement. Hewes a member
t�f North Street'United Church.
Surviving besides his wife, the former
Eleanor Muriel Shields, is one daughter
Bette '( Mrs. William Crawford) of Kincar-
dine and one son Norris of Toronto. Nine
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren
also survive.
Mr. Bradford was predeceased by one
brother, Riley Bradford, and three sisters,
Pearl Brown, Elsie MacKay and Beatrice
Bradford.
Funeral and committal services were
held at the McCallum and Pella Funeral
Home •on Thursday, April 2 with Rev.
Robert Ball of North Street United Church
cfficiating. Interment in Maitland
Cemetery.
ALLEN THOMAS CAIRNS
Allen Thomas Cairns of Goderich died at
his residence on Tuesday, March 31 at the
age of 66.
Born in Toronto on March 11, 1921, he was
the son of the late Weir Cairns and the fortn-

The late Mr. Cairns was a former
salesman. He was also a member of St.
George's Anglican Church and the Royal
Canadian Legion, Branch 109 in Goderich.
Surviving 'besides his wite, the. former
Patricia Alice Bradley, is one daughter,
Patricia Ann ( Mrs. Peter Deeley) of Thorn -
dale. Also surviving are one brother Donald
Weir Cairns of British ,Columbia. Several
granddaughters also survive.
The Royal Canadian Legion and Ladies
Auxiliary to Branch 109 held a memorial
service on Thursday evening at the Mc-
Callum and Palle Funeral Home. The
funeral service was held on Friday, April 3
with Rev. Robert Crocker of St. George's
Anglican Church officiating. Interment in
St. Marys Memorial. Cemetery.
MARTEN POELMAN
Marten Poelman, of Clinton and formerly
of Tuckersmith Township, died in St.
Joseph's Hospital on April 5. He was 67
years old.
Mr. Poelman was born on December 1,
1919 in Doezum•; Groningen, The
Netherlands, to the late Marten and
Rieckeltje ( Elzinga) Poelman. On May 9,

The Auburn Knox UCW Thankoffering
will be held on Wednesday, April 22 at 8,p.m.
at the church. The guest speaker will be -
Carolyn Gelewicks from the Christian
Reformed Church of Blyth.
Auburn ladies are invited to Thankoffer-
ing service at Blyth United. Church on Sun-
day, April 12 at 8 p.m. Mrs. Grace Pym will
be the guest speaker.
Mrs.. William Helisic of Goderich and
•great-granddaughter Jeni Maize of Port
Albert visited their parents and grand-
parents Mr. and Mrs. ,Emmerson Rodgers
on the weekend. '
Euchre party
There were six tables in play Tuesday
evening March 29 at the Community Hall.
Winners were Elaine Hag itt ( high lady ),
Bernice McClinchey ( low ly ), Grace Cart-
wright ( high man), Erma Cartwright, ( low
man and Mrs. Jerry Heffron (novelty).
Card parties are held every Tuesday
evening at 8 p.m. at the Community Hall:

3M's •
The 3 M's went bowling at the Little Bowl
in Goderich on Saturday evening April 4.
The lucky high winners were Bernice Gross
and Lawrence Plaetzer and the lows were
Margo and Jake Middelkamp. For a social
time afterwards they returned to the home
of Elliot and Kay Lapp. Nancy Park took
over the business and a bus trip for June
was discussed. Lunch was served by
Margaret and Marinus Bakker and Kay and
Ell Lapp.

Pastor Gary Shuttleworth conducted the
morning service at Knox United Church

The prayer, of invocation was read respon-
sively. Life and work of the church were
read by the pastor. The prayer of confession
and words of assurance were given followed
by the Lord's Prayer.•
• The junior choir sang "Why not look to
Him" under the direction of Mrs..Allan
Webster with Mrs. Gordon Gross as pinist.,..
The children's hymn "Jesus loves me" was
sung . and' Pastor Shuttleworth told the
children's story before they went, to junior
congregation wit achers Barbara Bak-
ker, Gail Dobie sand Karen Bakker.

received by Greg Park and Bob Worsell and

• 4-H meeting
The fourth meeting of the Auburn Super
Survivors was held en Wednesday, March 25
in the Auburn Library. The meeting opened
with the pledge and roll call,was taken.'
The group talked about laundry' and how
• to get out 'stains. They also talked about the
proper ways to dry and fold laundry.
Leona Cunningham, the secretary, then
read the minutes. The meeting was there
closed with the new motto.
On the same evening, the group held its
fifth meeting: The meeting was opened with
the motto and roll call.
The group discussed working in the house, _
doing it smarter and faster. Also discussed
ivassafety in the kitchen. The group learn-
ed how to replace a plug on an electrical ap-
pliance.

1947 he married the
Bysterveld in Sauwerd,
Netherlands.
The Poelmans came to Canada in August
of 1948, settling in Chatham. In 1950 they
moved to Cochrane where they lived until
1965 .when they moved to Tuckersmith
Township where they farmed until 1985.
They then moved to Clinton where they have
resided since.
Mr. Poelman, who was a member of the
Clinton Christian Reformed Church, is sur-
vived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs.
Hans ( Rita) VanDyke of Clinton, Mrs. John
( Eileen) Moerbeek of RR6 Goderich and
Mrs. Steve ( Linda) Keys of RR1 Varna; and
three sons, Tom and his wife Clara of Sur-
rey, B.C., Lloyd and his wife Joanne of Clin-
ton and Donald at home. He is also survived
by 14 grandchildren.
Mr. Poelman is survived by one brother,
Thomas of Athens, and one brother and two
sisters in the Netherlands.
He was predeceased by three sisters and
three brothers.
A funeral service was held on April 7 at
the Clinton and Christian Reformed Church
with Rev. Homer Samplonius officiating.

Caroline Louise Cox crossed the starting
line for the human race at 2:14 p.m.. March
31, 1987, at Holy Cross Hospital, Calgary.
The daughter of proud and amazed parents,
Janet Moffatt and' Kevin Cox, Caroline
follows that• feat with this, her first .ap-
pearance in the Goderich Signal Star. True
to the curling tradition. of her maternal
grandmother, Kay Midwinter of Sidney,
British. Columbia, Caroline showed. good
draw weight early, corning into play at 7 lbs.
11 ozs. She is as yet unaware that her
'background. has been recorded in books by
her paternal grandmother Phyllis Cox of
Goderich and by her great-aunt, Margaret
Moffatt of Dunrobbin.
