-Communities draw strength from peo-
ple who are not ashamed to acknowledge a
debt to the past, who see and act upon op-
portunities for service in the present and
are not easily dismayed by the problems of
the future," said Ken Smith in a speech at
the Vimy Memorial Banquet, Goderich
Legion Branch 109.
In his speech Saturday night to over 150
guests, Smith stessed the importance and
strength of rural Canada and described the
urban scene as discouraging. In the real
Canada of towns and countryside, Cana-
dian bravery and service are displayed by
volunteer fire departments and com-
munities that mobilize to rescue people
from natural disasters,
-People in small towns are more signifi-
cant than people in big cities," said Smith.
Smith, a former newspaper reporter
who began his career with the Woodstock
Sentinel, attacked the media for its lack of
concern and focus on the issue of maintain-
ing a strong militia and reserve system. In
areas where there is no reserve unit .it is
difficult to remind people what we have
and what we treasure in any community
cannot betaken for granted, said Smith. It
must be defended from time to time.
As a veteran of The Second World War,
where he served as a member , of The
• Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment in
Italy, Smith called for changes in' Cana-
dian military policy. ; Canadians, Smith
said, have little knowledge of the regular
forces or'militia and feels both should be
increased. However the • trend has been
just the opposite.
In 1964, Defence Minister, Paul Hellyer
disbanded 72 militia units and Smith's own
regiment, one of the largest, was reduced
to two companies. Smith feels manditory
military service should have been inp-
plimented after the. war. The current
.Defence Minister, Perrin Beatty, has
small town. roots and is working to in-
crease military capabilities..
Beatty's proposal to..have a Canadian
division in Germany would repair the
. weakness caused by Trudeau wyhen he cut
Canada's NATO contingent in half, said
Smith' ,

Smith wrote a book called Duffy's Regi-
ment which focuses on the military life of
- Regimental Sargeant Major Angus Duffy.
of the •Hasting and Prince Edward
Regiment.
At first, .Smith was unable to• find a
publisher for his book and resorted to hav
. ing it printed indendently. A -businessman
friend distributed the book through a mail
order service from his, office. Only three
copies of the original printing of 1,000 are
left, _ said Smith. Smith is currently
negoiating with a Toronto publisher and
' expects the book to appear as a soft cover
edition.
Smith works as the research director of
the Toronto Real Estate Board and is in
the process of writing a history of the
Board.
In' his speech Smith said parents and
grandparents must create an atmosphere
receptive to instruction about what this
county stands for and not to criticize
educational systems." He believes univer-
sity ,leaders should teach the great prin-

It's estimated, that eight out of 10 Cana-
dians will have a back injury sometime dur-
ing their lives: And yet, preventing back in-
jury can be as simple as learning proper lif-
' ting and material handling' techniques, lear-
ning how to relax, eleminating excess" body
'weight, strengthening neglected back
muscles, and adopting good posture habits
at work and home.
The next time you' have something heavy
to lift, do it properly. Before you begin, get a
firm footing with your feet apart for a stable '
base, bend your knees, tighten your
stomach muscles and lift with your Legs.
When carrying the load, keep it clbse to your
body and keep your back upright.
Learning to reduce stress: combined with
a sensible diet and exercise program . an
relieve back pain and start you on the rad
to a healthier lifestyle. You'll look bet er,
too! Since your spine is sensitive to
Muscular tensions that can build up during a
stress -filled day it's important to learn how
to relax. Try to organize your daily routine
to make it easier on both your mind and
body, and take life one day at a time. Exer-
cise can be an effective stress reducer and, -
since 80 per cent of back pain can be traced
to a lack of exercise, is an important Bart of
a healthy back program. Condition your
muscles to work as a team by starting a
regular exercise program.. Include exer-
cises that strengthen the muscles in your
back, upper legs, and especially the ab-
domen to increase your spine's. support.
Reducing a.potbelly and strengthening your
abdominals are major factors in reducing a
Tway -back and decreasing the force exerted
on the back. Along with strengthening your
muscles, it's also importaht to stretch them
out. Tight, shortened muscles can upset
muscular balance which increases the
-chances of back injury. Stretching exercises
make muscles more flexible and motion
easier.
Good posture gives your hack the support
it needs. Sitting tends to tilt the pelvis the
wrong way and is more stressful for your
• back than standing or walking: It's best not
to sit too long and to get up, stretch, and
walk around occasionally. Standing for long
periods of time can also put a strain on your
back. To help•decrease this strain, stand
with one foot elevated at a comfortable level
and switch feet every half hour or so, Check
your posture by placing your head and back
against a wall. Move your pelvis forward,
bend your knees slightly so that your back
.touches the wall, and walk away holding
that' position. If it feels comfortable, your
normal posture is probably ok.
Sleeping rests your back because while ly-
ing down, it doesn't have to Support your
body weight. To promote the most restful
sleep, use a firm mattress or waterbed and
sleep on your side with your knees bent or on
your back with your knees elevated.
It's up to you. Every move you make, on
- and ,off the job, depends on your back. So
keep your back in mind throughout gout
day, while you sit, stand, lift and carry."
Remember to practice the principles of
good body mechanics, and think before you
move.
