prepbration for what was. to come.
On Thursday evening. Jesus and his disciples
retired to,a quiet banquet room in Jerusalem
whr ie they were to celebrate the Passover.
Jesus took two elements from the traditional
meal the unleavened bread and the wine
and taught His disciples .to eat and drink
them often to commemorate His sacrifice for
all mankind Which. He knew was to come.
Christians still mark Maundy Thursday as the
time when Jesus Christ instituted the Eucharist
the Holy Communion ,os"'a meal for all
those who trust Him for their sbl ition from
death and damnation in Hell
In some churches the Maundy Thursday ser•

"It is important for Canadians to realize
tens of thousands of Ethiopians are alive
today because of Canadian assistance,"
said Don Langford of United Church
Missions.
Langford spoke at North Steet United
Church on Sunday about conditions and the
state of• development in Africa.
According to Langford, the rains have
come to Africa and eased the drought and
famine situation.
He returned -Feb. 1 from a food study
tour of Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Mosambi-
que. The tour provided exposure to local
situations and food distibution.proceedure.
Members of the tour are speaking to Cana-
dian churches about African relief.
Langford has been speaking to three or
four churches per week since he has
retrurned. He travels next to Winnipeg to
speak. '
Contributions from the United States are
now only a fraction' of Canada's, said
Langford. The Americans no longer want
to aid a country that has remained Marx-
ist. One Canadian ship carrying grain,
currently at the lake head, bound for Mon-
treal then Africa, is equal to
contribution.
African aid is a three-phase plan— relief,
rehabilitation and development, he said
Relief people are too weak to work and
food is given to - them to build' their
strength- -
° Rehabilatation: food is given in ,ret,r,n
for work. People receive 3kg of grain ° ;,amu.
125m1 of cooking oil per person, per day as
payment for manual labour. Later in the
program some' money is given for work so
families can ,buy meat and clothing.. This
aspect, says Langford leads to the deveop-
ment phase.
Development: church 'groups in Africa.
sell the grain to - Ethiopian Marketing
Board and this creates a cash flow. Money
is available to the people in exchange for
work.' The people can now buy farm equip-
ment and oxen to produce their own. food.
However relief organizations closely
monitor .the price of grain at local
markets. Langford said Canadian•
farmers can appreciate that we dont want
to flood the Market with cheap grain and
ditions in Africa

their own. When the church see the price
of grain at the markets. rise to 1.50 per cent
of set price, they stop adding grain- to the
system. - -

duces seed grains,'pork,•lamb and wool.
.He has a B.A.Sc. from the University of
Guelph and was appointed Mission Consul-
tant' for the London Conference of 'The
United Church of Canada.
Langford saidit is important to unders-
tand how the grain is shipped - attu

'rhe Food Grains Bank ..ships grain- to
church groups" in Africa where it is
distributed, said Langford. The Bank was
set up in 1975 by' the Menonites but now
contains seven different protestant chur-
chs. A representative in -the country re-
quests the grain and it provided. --
Langforc) wanted to'rriake it clear that it
was the small struggling Canadian farmer
who contributed most to African relief not
the rich.ones who would not rhiss the grain.
