Dear Editor:
I'm a student at GDCI and, like an in-
creasing proportion of Canadians, ,I have
become concerned with the growing
epidemic of 4IDS. As the terrifying situa-
tion in North America steadily worsens,
isn't it time to take action now to'slow the'
spreading of the deadly virus.
' No one can deny that within the next
decade or two, AIDS will have become a
serious health hazard in North America
( which includes Huron County!) We can't.
pretend that our precious co►iihnunity will
somehow be miraculously protected. For in-
stance, young people often move to larger
communities and cities, to find jobs or con-
tinue education and then later return home
to live. It is highly possible that this would
be one of the ways by which AIDS, could
come to Goderich. 4
There is no vaccine so if we are 'not
educated about the hazards of AIDS, how to
avoid the risk. of exposure and how to use
safe sex. practices, the.n in our ignorance,
people will die.
AIDS is no longer a disease of the "gay"
community. It is -shared by a growing

number of men and women, homo and
heterosexuals. It is not a question of morali-
ty but of mortality. I feel that I have a right
as a student to know about AIDS. You can-
not shield my peers and me from it, by keep-
ing us in the dark. Only be educating us can
we be truly protected.
I challenge and appeal to•my educators,
my political and religious leaders and my
elders to keep me and my fellow students in-
formed about AIDS. I want to live a long and
productive life. I don't want my f iends to
die because they were insu iciently
educated about AIDS. I want to live in a
healthy and safe community. That goal can
be achieved through the AIDS education of
all peoples.
Thank you,
Sincerely yours,
Heidi Hoernig

Coalition says pay equity'
proponents are misleading
Dear Editor:
Ontarians are being seriously misled by
left-wing activists who want to impose "pay
equity" on the provin.ce's. private sector. In
setting 'Wages, these activists want to
substitute government central planning for
the free market, which operates on the law
of supply of demand.
Haven't they learned anything from the
rent control fiasco?
The activists' 'central: premise to "pay
equity" is, that the free market isn't
operating fairly -. that it discriminates
against women in setting wages.
However, these activists refuse.to face the
fact that there are very powerful, market
factors associated with the.fainily; the most
fundamental unit in our society. These
neutral market factors include interruption
of work and aversion to overtime, shift
:.work, travel, 'etc. These factors affect all
Workers. However; because of . the way
' Canadians have chosen to st?acture their
' families, women are more affected'by these
marketfactors than m.en.
If . the market discriminates against
w.ornen, one would -expect it to discriminate
against never -married women, as well as
married women.
What do independent studies show?
A 1979 Statscan study of 1971 Census data
showed that never -married women earned
99.2 per cent of what never -married men
make.
A 1984 Statscan study showed that never -
married women aged 45-54 years earned 13
per' cent 'more than never -married men in'
the same age bracket.
A 1985 Statscan study showed that never -
married women aged -Over 55 earned 18 per
cent more than never -married men in the
same age bracket.
It's simply' impossible to . have these
results and at the same time maintain that
the market discriminates.
Finally, the -1985 Statscan study showed
that all never -married men earned only 42
per cent of what all married men earned.
Are these left-wing activists going to push
for "pay equity" for never -married men as
well?
Yours sincerely,

Small gesture by stranger.
appreciated by local resident
Dear Editor:
In this busy lifestyle of ours it's rewarding.
to find a person who will do something out of
'. the kindness of their heart, rather than be-
ing asked, or paid to-do it.
. - My house is situated on a' large double lot,
making it too far from the street to have.
my mailbox at the door. The mail box is
therefore located close to the street. On Sun-
day morning, April 4, a young girl dropped a
flyer into' my mailbox out at the street. As
she preceded to the next home she noticed
the Toronto Star laying on my lawn near the
street. This young girl was' thoughtful
enough to pick up the paper and walk all the
way in to my house and put it on the door
step. This was- an excelitional kind deed,
especially when she did not have to come' to
my house at. all and I am a complete
stranger to her.
How many people would have done this?
Probably only one in a million and her name
is Tanya Mabon. This kind gesture moved
me so much that I wrote this letter to let the
rest of you know that.we still have some kind
and thoughtful young people` out there, so
don't be too quick to criticize our youth.
Thanks Tanya, you made my day. •
