One Canadian 'study dealing with class
size indicated that children were more ag-
gressive in large groups; there was con-
siderable waiting to . use equipment and
longer times !betjween turns at a..favorite
activity; the teacher had few opportunities
to guide children to minimize negative ac-
tion. In smaller groups, by contrast, the
teacher becomes a more significant per-
son in the life of the child. The climate of
the small class fosters more creative,
' dramatic and social .experbince. The at-
mosphere in the larger classes tends to be
noisy and •lesttnductive to cooperative,
creative play..
Children can be lost ih large crowds,
Children need attention for social, emo-
tional' and cognitive guidance. They need
time to explore, „manipulate, play and
socialize as well. as time a lone to reflect
and time for a one-on-one relationship with
the teacher.I
Both parjents and educators are
•recognizing ;the, importance of primary
education. Parents want the educational
system to cater to the special needs of each
child and that cannot be realistically ad-
dressed in atypical classroom, structured
setting with ,classes• that exceed 30
students. .
Children require a variety of
based learning programs help

Column rekindles m
I enjoy reading the Signal -Star. and
William Thomas' column about flights
reminded me of my first flight years ago.,
Back in 1929, my husband, Donald Mac-
Pherson, would work with the mechanic at
Windsor Airport. ' • ' '
He would go on test flights which- I didn't
know at the time. We lived quite a distance
from the airport but, when aircrafts'dipped
low over the house, I knew he would be home
soon. One Sunday I was tohave my.first fly-
ing experience, a flight Don had arranged
over. Windsor and Essex County.
The aircraft was wide, double winged with

recall why it was so difficult to•get irito the
aircraft; but I had to lift little Don up and his
dad took hold of him. When I was to be
l elped up I couldn't get my feet off the

UN THE SQUARE, GODERICH
ground. I couldn't move. What a sensation.
It was an open cockpit and you can im-
agine the windy ride. I couldn't shut my
eyes if I tried. .We flew over Windsor and
Detroit and you could see everything clear-
ly. Essex County is flat with water on three
sides and a skinny finger sticking out into
Lake Erie. Huron County, with its hills, was
a real thrill for to drive around.
Driving in Huron County I kept getting
lost inathe Little Lakes area. If I crossed
Ball's Bridge I was'in trouble and if I tried
another route I would end up miles from
Goderich towards Kincardine. You meet the
nicest people getting lost. In one column I
said I wished 'I could go ".up top'.' to see the
roads and a gentlemen called me and said
he,would,take me up Anytime.
A few days later I went to the airport to
see Mr. Hindmarsh turning a big old air-
craft I recognized- it looked like the one in
Windsor and my feet took root again. It also
reminded me of son Doug who poked around
his aircraft before we took off in Florida.
Mt. Hindmarsh pointed out different
farmsand while '.,didn't learn much about
my wrong turns, I enjoyed the flight. There
was a hole near my foot and the air was
cold. He said he'd fix it someday. I wonder?
Son Don' B. was with the coming back
from Florida six years ago. Heading into
Detroit International Airport, little Essex
County, was sitting.aheadiof us. It looked like
an architect's model sitting on the table with
.all the miniature buildings. What a sight!
You could see every town from Kent County
along to Michigan along the Detroit River-. I
knew every village, town and the city of
Windsor. What a sight! I had drawn that
map so often in school in Cbmber and it was
just as I had visualized. Even the old
smokestacks were belching out black
smoke.
