The students' will be selling daffodils every Thursday, Friday and Saturday throughout April in Goderich. This year's campaign goal is $29,700 which is about a 10 per cent increase over funds raised last year. "T44 is a .10% increase over. last year's $27,700.00. "With the generous support of Goderich and area residents and people like them throughout the province, the Ontario :Divi- sion of the Canadian Cancer Society hopes to raise $18.2 million in 1987," he said. BY WILMA OKE Michael's Elementary school to convert it to William Eckert, director of education with,theHuron-Perth County Roman Cathlic Separate School, Board, expressed his concern ata board meeting Monday over headlines an the board's deficit in recent -newspapers. Mr. Eckert said he felt the newspapers' headlines needed clarification as they gave readers a mistaken impression. of a $338,000 deficit at: the end of 1986. Mr. Eckert had a copy of the board report as carried by the Mitchell Advocate with the headline "High School Expenses cause Huge Deficit". The 'deficit was blamed on the lack of government grants for the start-up ex- penses of the new secondary school in Strat- ford. A1!'-sius School. °To'ac- commodate these extra students, there . were'renovations at• St. Aloysius and these expenses were included in the deficit.' Trustee Ronald Murray', finance chair- man, said, "I'm sorry to say we didn't get any grants for the start up on the secondary school" adding that he did'n't know .how the . , • deficit would be paid off but "I'll guarantee the $338,000 will be addressed." In other business, contract .talks between' the board • and the teachers' negotiating committee are continuing without the need of an arbitrator. ' • A number of staff changes were approved at the board, meeting Monday night. Ine2 Hand, who taught at St. Mary's School at Hesson for many years, has retired. Rhoda Daniel of Holy Name of Mary School in St. Marys has resigned. Linda Wagg and Maureen Sabin were granted one-year leaves of absence. Brian Morrissy was ' given four days leave of absence to attend a teachers' meeting for the purpose of fulfill- ing responsibilities on the' provincial teacher welfare committee for the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association. Gaetan Blanchette, one, of the superintendents of education for the board, spoke on the teaching of French and he said coming up in the local schools will. be an ex- tension of the French classes frorn 20 • minutes'fo 40 rrlinutes.
