Robertson Memorial Public School held its annual Science Fair for grade 7 and 8 students
this week. Tanya Ross, a grade 8. student, won first place in her grade for her project on
Erosion Control, Her experiment was concerned with finding the most effective erosion
control method, Finishing second, thirdand fourth for grade 8 respectively were Trish Cur-
rie (Hamster Learning), Jackie Rau (Effect of Temperature of Paint) and Jeni Hayter

preparing for the Huron County Regional
Science Fair, April 10 and 11 at the Clinton
Public School,.. .
Prizes to be won include cash awards,
trips to the Canada Wide Science Fair. in'
May and a trip to the Suncor 'Yout'h. Sym-
posiurn on.'Artificial Intelligence in June.
Projects will he, on display for public view-
ing from 12 until 4 p.m. • • •
Students. in Grades, 7 to 12 from local •
.schools �°vill be - competing in the fair,
organized by local Volunteers and sanction-
ed by the Youth Scienee Foundation. The
Foundation, a 'charitable nonprofit
organization,' sponsors more .than 80
regional science fairs that stretches from
Wabush,' Labrador to Victoria, British'
Columbia.
One of the most coveted prizes is the Sun-
cor Energy Award, which entitles the win- '
ner to travel,all-expenses paid to a weeklong
national symposium on artificial. in-
telligence” i AI 1 in Toronto. The program
combines challengingideas, "hands on"
science and an • opportunity to meet like-
minded students trom'ati over the country.
"Man.v •scientists and futurists believe AI
will transform our thinking, our jobs 'and
our society," said Tom Thomson, President
and Chief Executive Officer of Suncor Inc.
"International 'researchers will help the
students explore these issues.
"Experts from' Xerox Canada and the
- Canadian Institute for Advanced Research '
will also help the students solve a 'hands on'
problem — the design of a simple Al pro-
gram," Said Mr, Thomson. Xerox. is pro-
viding ALworkstations for the hands•on part
of the symposium.
Mr. Thomson said that "the era of in-
telligent machines is still in thejuture,. but
the time ,to begin preparing 'is now. We
believe that the Suncor Youth 'Symposium
will help make young people more aware of
the challenges they will face. And we hope it
will help stimulate debate on the benefits as
well as the risks of AI."
Suncor is one of Canada's major in-
tegrated oil and gas companies. This is the
seventh year that Suncor has sponsored the
Youth., Symposium Program. •Each syin-
posium topics include toxic waste manage-
ment, energy planning for developing coun-
tries, ^laser applications, satellite design and
water management.
Seniors awards presented
by provincial government
TORON'1'0 - The Honourable Ron Van
Horne, Minister for Senior Citizens' Affairs
and MPP for London North, has announced
that the provincial government will again
honor individual seniors with Ontario Senior
.Achievement Awards This is part of the
Senior Citizens' Month celebrations held in
June each year.
"Through these Senior Achievement
Awards we want to recognize and honor
outstanding seniors who have made signifi-
cant contributions to our communities and
to the quality of life in Ontario", said Mr.
Van Horne.
Nominations for the awards may be made
by the public as well as community
organizations wishing to recognize in-
dividuals in their area. Nominees must be
senior citiiens, residents of the Province of
Ontario, and have achieved significant
goals and rnade an outstanding contribution
to the citizens of the province during their
retirement years. A selection committee
will review all the nominations and select
this year's award winners. .
"I was particularly pleased with the over-
whelming numberof nominations we
received last year", said Mr. Van Horne.
"For many, the retirement years have.
become the age of opportunity. More and
more seniors are exploring new ventures
and participating in a wide variety of
activities." -

nomination form. Deadline for making
nominations is April 15.
