Missionary co
The decor itself suggested something of
the unusual during the recent missionary
convention at Huron Chapel Missionary
Church in Auburn, but no-one anticipated
the excitement that would build during the
four-day event.
Ron Faw, a Canadian missionary to
Brazil, and a paraplegic as a result of a
motorcycle accident on the field, inspired
the 60 people present in the first service with
his dedication and his account of God's
working.in that country. The first indication
that something unusual was happening
came when Pastor Carne announced that
the offering of cash and pledges totalled
$129725.
he Friday evening service featured mis-
sionary Wayne Feay of Sierra Leone,
Africa. The offering that night amounted to
a further.$1902.54.
Saturday evening, Keith, Elliott
represented the work of the church in
Ecuador. At this point, Pastor Carne con-
fessed later that he was sure that "the well
had gone dry," but the evening's offering
yielded another $1399.45.
Sandra Tjart, a 'counsellor to a'l'coholics,
vention held
drug addicts, prostitutes and homosexuals
in an inner-city .ministry in Brazil, told of
her work in the final service on Sunday mor-
ning.. There was a great sense of praise and
thanksgiving when the offering of $1084.50
was announced. Sunday evening further
pledges, amounting to $240 were received.
The goal for the convention had .been set at
$3000; the total cash and pledges received
was $5923.70.
Three -feet -high figures of people of
various nationalities were drawn and
painted by Shirley Luna and Pastor Carne
and located on the front walls of the church.
The theme, -Partners In Harvest", was il-
lustrated by sacks of grain on the platform,
toy tractors and combines in th'e windows
and a large picture depicting a farm scene,
with four pieces representing the miracles
accomplished by prayer, manpower, money
and materials, cut out in jig -saw fashion.
Each night the service began in the dark
while a taped monologue. emphasized the
importance of one of the pieces of. the
picture that was later placed in its ap-
propriate place and coloured' lights .were
turned- up to illuminate the whole scene; -
OSAP budget increased
The. Ontario Student Assistance Program
OSAP I budget will be increased by 17 per
cent 'for • 1987-88, Colleges and Universities
Minister Gregory Sorbara said recently.
Specific improvements to OSAP include a
sharp reduction in the fil;ancial contribution
from parents .of students from low-income
families. As well, sole support parents will
now be eligible'for grant assistance to cover
child care costs.
OSAP will provide more assistance to
students from, farm families because farm
assets will now, be considered at half their
net 'value. The decision to increase
assistance to students from farm t'amilies
resulted fro'n a review of declining farm
prices and the resulting impact on farm
incomes.

In addition, Sorbara said OSAP will ex-
tend grant assistance to students attending
degree -granting religious schools 'and ap-
proved art schools. Until now, students at-
tending institutions such as the Ontario Bi-
ble College and the National Theatre School •
-
in Montreal, to cite just two examples, have
been eligible only for loan assistance:
Sorbara said much of the new funding will,
be directed to increasing the grant
assistance provided to students. - These
changes td OSAP are consistent with the On-
tario Government's policy of increasing ;ac-
cessibility to -post-secondary institutions.
This is the second substantial increase to the
Ontario Student Assistance. Program 'in as
many years. .
am available for farmers
The Ontario Beginning Farmer'
'Assistance Program i BFAP) has . been
available since January 1, 1983 to help peo-
ple get started into farming, • but : not
everyone realizes that it's a five-year pro-
gram. 1987 is its last year'and December 31
is the application deadline date.
If a proposal to start into farming' is ac-
cepted by an eligible lender 1 FCC, banks
and trust companies ), BFAP provides an in-
terestrebate for the, first five y..ears'of the.
loan. The rebate may lower fhe cost of in-
terest to eight ,per cent. The current FCC'
rate is used as the bench nark for interest
reduction. .•
BFAP is meant for, people starting into
farthing and has been' especially helpful in
'many cases for those buying into the family
business..
There, have been over 200 BFAP, contact
the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and.
'Food Office in Clinton.'
