A group. of Goderich service organiza-
tions have gotten into the Christmas spirit,
a bit early thtti year. The to area clubs and
organizations have.united for the34rst pro-
ject to ever involve all the local service •
-groups, • under the banner of "Christmas

'1'he eventual result of their combined ef-
forts should be a "bigger and better." ver-
sion of the annual Christmas lighting
display on The Square, said 'fora Stark, of
the Goderich. Kinsmen"Club.
'l'he project began, when..a committee
was formed between the groups to look
after the lighting and decorating, of The
Square. -
'.'Like everyone else, our biggest
challenge is storage, said Stark.
Withorit a permanent place to store their
deeoarations when not in use, the clubs felt
it would Ise impossible til ekpancl and, im-
prove the display as they wished to do,•and
so, the idea of a common storage shed vas
born.'
''he.grotihs apprnac•hec) Goderich Town
Council and received approsal to locate
the shed on town-ownecl.lant on Cypress
Street, The service clubs will .onstruct the
shed and pay capital costs, maintenance
and utility costs, while the tovn will supply
the land, pay for the building Jerinit, taxes
and insurance and look triter gro(Pnds
maintenance. The "building will be
restricted to storage of Christmas
decoarations including both those owned
by the town and the service dubs.
Stark said it would cost ar(und $25,000 to
have a contractor build the 31 by 50 foot
ed. but the groups hope to co it for about
half that, by doing the labortlemselves. In
this area. they are hoping forsorne general
community involvement. When construc-
tion starts., members of thf'.public will be
welcome to come down and lend a hand or
a hanuner to the project..
"If they don't want to help 'hat way', they
can send donations to 'Christnas '87, Town
of Goderich,', and it will 'get to us," Stark
said.
'his pooling of resources knot merely a .
sh t -terra prospect which will end once
7,
the shed is 'built. -
"It's going 'to be a long terra thing;"
Stark saich •
Eventually, they plan to work on enhanc-
ing•the Christmas lights display by holding
a mini -winter carr)-ival, with snow
sculptures and other attractions.
"Our aim is to get more people in.volved,
It's i the display i is there for everyone's
enjoyment. In the future we hope to ex-
pand it and get more activities going —try
and make it a day -long event," said Stark,
adding'that he hopes the activities would
get more families out to The; •Square at
Christmas time. •• .
Decorating The Square• is'a unique op-
portunity to showcase the town, said Stark.
"As Kinsmen,', we take peole. from
Maitland, Manor around to. see the ligs
and they crime back. With tears in. tit' it
eyes," he said, "We have got the perfect
place to•do something like this.No one else
has anything like that •1'fhe Square.) and
we should be promoting it."

•A number of councillors spoke on the•
issue; some .supporting Mr. Tomes' sug-
gestion for variety of ieasons, while
others presented an equallyvaried assort-
ment of arguments for continuing the
grant. However, it was Mr.•Rau who turn-
ed the tide - and brought about the collapse
of his fellow councillors - Then he told his
tale. .
When he was a Young lad, Mr. Rau said,
he neyer had an opportunity, as children
do now, to board a bus and travel to an in-
door pool for swimming lesson's:
However, all that has changed as'. a
result of recent swinuning lessons he
received at the Vanastra pool. . .
When council regainedtheir composure,.
a 23-8 recorded vote approved the grant.

WELCOME TO THE FRIENDLY CHURCH
The Fourth Sunday in Lent
The Fourth Sunday in Lent will be celebrated
this Sunday in the Christian Church. Eighteen
days and two Sundays remain in the season for
reflection on the suffering and the death of
Jesus Christ at Colvary 00 n plain wooden cross.
Of tremendous significance to Christians is
Christ's promise that He will forgive the sins of
those who believe in Him and trust that His suf-
fering and death paid in fi),)I for ail their sins,
no matter how grievous
Aside from the Scriptures themselves. there
is almost no authentic information about Jesus
Christ But the Roman historian Tacitus, writing
soon patter 100 A D did make a passing
reference"to Chnstus and states that Ile was.
condemned to death by Pontius Pilote under
Emperor Tiberius This fits with the Biblical ac-
count which Christians accept by faith
