Lent
• The season of Lent began on Ash Wednes-
day, 0 consists of 40 days before Holy Week,
and iS" thg—tIme.of-the Church Year when Chris-
tians remember the -Suffering and death of
their Lord' and Soviour, Jesus Christ,
Some churches have midweek Lenten ser-
vices which zero in on the final hours of
Christ's life on earth. The scripture readings
are taken from. the Gospels which tell the
complete story of Christ's passion, and ser-
' mons built around these writings with an em-
phasis on what Christ's death then means for
those who are living today.
Many churches use purple or black-on..the • '
altar. the pulpit and the lecturn to indicate,
the season. Sometimes crosses are draped:
with purple or block, while special Lenten
music is sung and played to show the solem
nity of Lent.
