About 130 women attended the service - this year's theme was "Come and rejoice"- at Christian Reformed Church, Suncoast Dr. The movement encompasses all major Christian denominations in more than 170 countries and regions. It is unique, because it is a local event organized by lay women to affirm that prayer and action are inseparable, while both influence the world. How things have changed. In 1933, in the school room of North Street United Church, 100 women raised $9.75 in Goderich's first ion record) World Day of Prayer. This year a total of $183.60 was collected. The money helps fund programs in Canada and worldwide including: Inter- church committee on human rights in Latin America; YWCA to encourage self employment for women in Samoa; East End Literacy supporting a comrnunity, based literacy program in East York, On- tario; the establishment of The Emma Robertsbn. The World' Day of Prayer Prayer began in 1887 byMrs, Mary Ellen James of. Brooklyn, New York. In 1918, Canadian women were called together under,. the leadership of Mrs. ,Bessie McMurchy. To- day, more than .170'countries join together: on the first Friday of March to ,pray for special and, spiritual concerns of • their country. •. IIII - . Mrs. Nancy Stapleton, president of the St. Augustine Catholic Women's League and. Mrs. Betty Lou Dalton; chairlady of the World Day of. Prayer, welcomed 60 ,people taking part in the centennial theme, "COME AND REJOICE". The special speaker was•Reverend Frank Dentinger, pastor. Mrs. Walter ( Renee) Stalenhoef of RR 3 Auburn provided special songs and music. T• he local history highlights were:given' by MrS. K.K.' Dawson.: The United Chur- ches of Dungannon, Crewe and Port Albert' organized in the late '30s with Mrs. ,Mel Reid Of -Dungannon as chairlady. In theearly '50s Nile United and the Port Albert Anglican ladies were welcomed, followed by St. Augustine Roman Catholic and Donnybrook United. , - • • In'the early '70s the Christian Reforme°d Church was active in Dungannon and they joined. St.. Joseph's Roman • Catholic Church, Kingsbridge transferred from the Lucknow group in. I980. `North Ashfield Presbyterian, who have been active in their own church; jpinedin 1982 and in 1987 ..the Trinity ,. United church transferred from Lucknow. . Churches taking part •in 197 are: Dungannon United Church, North Ashfield Presbyterian, Port Albert Anglican, Trini- ty United, Donnybrook United, Kingsbridge Roman Catholic, Nile United .. and St. Augustine Roman Catholic. • During the' social hour, the lunch was served including a special 100th Anniver- , sary cake. Bert McCreath chaired the meeting, and welcomed everyone with a special welcome back to Les and Doris Helton. Gertrude Treevartha played the organ for opening exercises. Roll Call was taken with 31 present. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. 'rank Yeo presented the treasurer's report and correspondence' was read. The Zone Rally; is to be at Dashwood on April 7. ' Charlotte read a few stories from the -Seniors' paper, The Voice. ' March 19 is to be the Enterprising • meeting with pancakes at 2 p.m.' • The quilters are just finishing their fifth quilt for this year. Congratulations ladies. The quilters presented Mary Puffer, Helen Lindsay and Eloise •Charlton and Blanche Deeves with a thank you card for their lunch prepared by these ladies. At the next meeting, Bernice and Stan Mcllwain .will present slides- of New Zealand. • • Cards and Shuffleboard were played and lunch and social time enjoyed.
