day of r.yer
Friday marked the 100th anniversary of
World Day of Prayer.
About 130 women attended the service -
this year's theme was "Come and
rejoice"- at Christian Reformed Church,
Suncoast Dr.
The movement encompasses all major
Christian denominations in more than 170
countries and regions. It is unique,
because it is a local event organized by lay
women to affirm that prayer and action
are inseparable, while both influence the
world.
How things have changed. In 1933, in
the school room of North Street United
Church, 100 women raised $9.75 in
Goderich's first ion record) World Day of
Prayer. This year a total of $183.60 was
collected.
The money helps fund programs in
Canada and worldwide including: Inter-
church committee on human rights in
Latin America; YWCA to encourage self
employment for women in Samoa; East
End Literacy supporting a comrnunity,
based literacy program in East York, On-
tario; the establishment of The Emma
Robertsbn. Etesource Centre on Wife
Assault.
