Many people like to read but for some per-
sons, reading conventional print material is
impossible. However, at the Huron County
Public Library and five library branches iii
the county, there is an alternative known as
the Talking Book Service.
The Talking Book Service allows people
who cannot read conventional print
material to "read" the same books by using
cassette tapes.
-The service is for anyone with a visual or
physical handicap that won't allow you to
read regular print material," explained
Marian Doucette, information services co-
ordinator and Talking Book Service co-
ordinator at the Huron County Public
-Library. She added, that the service is not
just for the blind, as so many people believe.
"Our youngest reader is a three-year-old
child who has been blind since birth. We
also have a 10 -Year-old boy who can't turn
"the pages of regular printed material and
who uses the Talking Book Service because
of this. Many senior citizens and stroke vic-
tims also use the service.
The Huron County Public Library began
offering the Talking Book Service when they
received a private donation from a Goderich
resident as well as a Wintario grant.
Presently, there are 566 'talking books in the
HurUii County library system. Doucette add-
ed, "We alWays have access to 5,000 titres
through library loan."
There is a wide range of titles from which
to choose, both at the Huron County Public
Library and through library loan. All kinds
of regular books are recorded by profes-
sional readers. There are children's books
such as "A Bear Called Paddington"' by
Michael Bond and 'even a Nancy Drew
mystery called "The Secret of the Old
(,'lock", ,by . Carolyn Keene. Westerns, .
romance novels and even such books as The
Thorn Birds are available through the Talk-
ing Book -Service.
"The books cover a wide variety:of styles
and you can find almost anything you want
to read: Some of the popular periodicals are
also -available but these are expensive afid'i
are dated very quickly," Doucette said, ad-
ding that one encyclopedia has also been.

Once .borrower. approval is given,. all that
is required to use the: cassette hooks is a.
tape recorder which, according to Doucette,
should be.cleaned at least once a year. If a
tape breaks; a replacement, tape costs about
$4.
Buying recorded books can 'be expensive.
Last year, the library were not able to buy
any new books to add, to their, collection due'
to lack of funds. • , •
"A Western o"r your popular average
'paperbac'k is about six cassettes and costs
anywhere between $20 and $30. The Thorn

Doucette said. •

The Huron` --Perth County Roman Catholic
Separate School Board finished up 1986'with
a deficit of $338,000.,The deficit is the result
of thestart-up expenses of converting St,
Michael's Elementary School in Stratford.
"I'm sorry to. say that we didn't get any
grants -for the start-up expenses," 'said
Trustee Ronald Murray, finance chairman.
He stated that through the combination of
provincial grants and local taxes, the nor-
mal operating expenses of the board•for the
year were covered.
Mr. Murray declared, "I'll guarantee the
$338,000 will be addressed." •
Business Administrator Jack bane said
the 1986 financial statement has been
audited and will be forwarded to the
Ministry of Education. If satisfied With the
financial statement the Ministry will give

Because of the cost, Doucette has started
to send letters to community groups to try
and spark some interest in helping• the
library purchase more books. One of 'the
first groups to respond was the Goderich
Kinette Club who donated $50 towards the
purchase of two talking books.
Doucette noted that each of the five town
libraries in. Huron County (Goderich, Clin-
ton, Exeter, Seaforth and Wingharni 1ra've a
small selection of books which they rotate.
The majority of books are 'at, the Huron
CountyPublic Library's main .branch in
Goderich. The library also has a shut-in ser-
vice in which books can be mailed out at no
cost for postage. The talking books can be
signed out for a four-week period. •
"There are a lot of people who depend on
it (The Talking Book . Service) and •ap,
predate- it," Doucette said.

ing Book Service, please contact your local
