Premier David Peterson's office an- nounced recently that J. Howard Aitken, 56, former associate publisher of the ('lin- ton News Record and Mitchell Advoate, has been appointed for a two-year terra. Aitken has been actively involved in many community activities, including ,in- oo.r 'i•'1 •Iain trutr•ist promotion. fie recent - Riddell stays o from page 1 behind long ago.” Mr. Riddell believes his party has had a great impact on the Ontario g(vernment. As examples, he used social services, educ'at'ion, the economic front, job creation and the health field: • . In the social ,services area, Mi. ltiticiell said the liberal government implemented almost $180 -million in improvements to areas,•such as 'community and home Ser vice for seniors and accessible daycare. On the topic of education he gave credit to colleagues Greg Sorbara and Sean Con- way for "top-notch jobs." Through their efforts, adequate funding for colleges and universities has been restored and an in- crease , in spending on new schools and' renovations to older schools has been look- ed after, he said. .-...44or-the-ec^enomic side, Mr. Riddell used the latest budget as an example. "Our, last provinci'al.butlget responds to the individuals. regions and industries, that need immediate help and provides for ,the long-term needs, •in Ontario's social programs." In .the employment area. 153,000 jobs were created in 1986 with 139,000` of that figure falling into the full time category. As well, "Ontario has the . 1cPwest • seasonally' adjusted unemiiloyment rate of all provinces in January' at 6.6 per cent. By comparison, the rate for the •rest of -Canada, excluding Ontario, ,was 11,6 .per cent," said' Mr. Riddell. . Citing example's. of improvements . the. Liberals will, be making in the health care - area, Mr. Riddell pointed out the 7,4 per cent increase on hospital spendingand the .6.8 percent increase on funding. to health units as examples., • appointment ly retired as vice-president of Signal -Star Publishing Ltd. . • He was co-chairman ofd group in 1959 that successfully campaigned for repeal of the Canada Temperance Act. This paved the way fur subsequent plebiscites which .tpproved introduction of beer and liquor outlets in Goderich. Douglas Dri.nkwalter ' uf Sufcoe was reappointed chairnland of the L1.13() for two years. Aitken served as chairman of the town's tourist coilunittee when it evolved out of the Junior Chamber uf Conunercle, an organiza- tion he also served in the capacity of presi- dent. Be later was appointed to the Mid Western Region "Tourist •('ouncil, a regional council serving four counties, and served on the town's industrial commission. . inetnher of the Huron County Housing Authority for over eight year's, he•was ap- pointed chairman itt January 11986. He is also president of the Goderich Rotary Club. atithe helm of riding this decade," he said. To help alleviate these problems, the Liberal government has increased spen- ding on agrieultrue by 61 per cent in two years. • According to Mr: Riddell-, "That's a big- ger increase than any other nunistry by Var." At this point, Mr. Kiddell• expressed displeasure with the leader of the opposi- tion, Larry Grossman. "I find it incredible that : Larry, Grossman has the nerve to stand up and criticize our expenditures on agriculture as being too little," commented Mr. Riddell: .Citing examples .as to .how the govern- nient has -assisted the agriculture sector. .Mr. Riddell said the Ontario Family Farm Interest Rate -Reduction Program 1 0E'- FIRRi paid out $46 -million to over 9,500 families in Ontario. Locally, 807 farmers in Huron County were given a total amount of $4 -million. local 'If agriculture is depressed, th farm equipMent dealer feels the . 141c'so , do the feed and deed dealers, th truckt)r's, ' tlje,'sales barn operators. and' so on•., /. "Employees of these operations also feel the • pinch and may even lose their jobs. This in turn infects all other local businesses. And when the whole•comrnunity i affected economical- ly, then the - social, . recreational and religious institutions'are also'affected. • ' "So you can see the health of agriculture • very much • affects communities such as Clinton, Wingham, Goderich, Seaforth and Exeter," explainedcMr. Itiddel.l. ASSISTING; HURON COUNTY Assisting Huron County' 1:s Minister. :of Ag-rlculture and Food, , Mr. Riddell told the full house audience Mr. Riddell's main interest was looking • that he believes Huron County residents after the farmers. - have benefited from the liberals being in "My number one priority has been the power. current difficult financial situation that .-Let me give you a •fe,v examples." he . farmers have.faced'since the beginning of said. The plan is scheduled to ' he , presented to council at. special meeting.. - March 16.. ' • A number of variables will affect the final. mill rate, •including determination of the 'acute'. 198.6 surplus. For budget figures,' the' surplus was -pencilled • in at • $200,000. but' it could turn out as high as $230,000. The final figure should be known by March 19. . • There was a substantial increase in the ' assessment for taxation' purposes in 1987 due to new buildings, This has a beneficial 'effect when calculating • the mill rate. However, it will also have the effect of in- creasing Goderich':s council and school hoard apportionment percentage for re= quisi-stion purposes.. These effects will be known by April, when Huron County Colin... cil and county schodl boards establish their budgets. • Surviving "the 'discretionary list, was a proposed 3.5., per cent increase in, remuneration to council members which will add a total of ,$1,389 to the total budget. Mr. Riddell went nun further to say the Liberal Party values the many c•onununity hospitals, adding the Seaforth hospital receivizd $1.2 -million to expand its emergency department and the Alexandra Marine acid General Hospital received $110,550 th expand 'the psychiatric out- patient facilities. "And the 'Clinton hospital. which the Tories tried to close, received $400,000 for a neve' obstetrical wing," -he added. Everyone is expecting an election in the near future so preparations are now under- ^ way. and Mr. Riddell warns that if the Huron Tiding wants to continue receiving the type of finalrcial support it has.enjoyed recently, the Liberals roust win.this riding. "It would be er'trerylely dangerous to sit back on our laurels at this tiine and expect that ,we-ha-ve'.some sort of divine right to. hold'this riding. ' •tithing can' be . further. from the truth. . We Must continually work to earn the'right • to represent the people of this riding," said' Mt'. Riddell. "We 'are now on election footing.
