Go. er ich drops
The Goderich Sairs were eliminated
from the Ontario. Hockey Association
Junior 'C' playoffs last Wednesday when
they lost 12-3 here to the Port Elgin. bears.
The loss was the fifth for the Sailors -in
their three -team round-robin, series and
mathematically eliminated them from the
series.
Port Elgin and Wingham were continu-
ing their games with each other until a
winner is decided. The winner will play
Hanover in the finals. The Barons ousted
the Walkerton Blackhawks 5-0 in a best -of -
nine semi-final series.'
Ken Fedemnra led the Bears in their win
over the Sailors, scoring three goals. Dan
Dawe and Scott Morgan had, two„ apiece
while Jeff Tanner; Wayne Simmons, Jini
Craddock, Joe Fla-herty and John McPher-
son each scored once.
Matthew Morris took care of the Sailors'
out of round robin playoff series
t
,curii,g, getting aLt three Guderich goals.
Assists went to Trevor Martin, Shawn Dur -
pin, Dave Duncan and Al Hetherington.
Sailors' backup goaltender Greg Town-
send carne on in `relief of starter Tom Dur-
nin in the third period and made many
outstanding saves while holding the Bears
to just one goal in the period.
The Sailors season was not a great one in
terms of their won -lost record. They won
one game ,and tied four in the regular
season and. were winless in the playoffs.
However, the fact that the Sailors cern-
pleted their season at all was a tribute to
coaches Dick Madge and Dale Duncan,
manager Don Larder and the executive,
headed byy'John Hoy. At the beginning of
the season, the team almost folded
because of a shortage' of players', but a re-
organization of the executive led to a deci-
sion to continue operation of the year-old
f r•anchrse.
As the season progressed, more players
joined the tearer and the play of the team,
became more respectable even though it
still could not put wins on the board. One
factor that helped the Sailors survive was
the cooperation of the coaches of the
midget teams, Kevin Austin and Bill
Rahbek, in allowing' the Sailors to use
players. Another was a supply -line of
London-based players which the sailors
developed. By season's end, eight players
from London were on the team roster.
The survival of the team through this
year should allow a more competitive
team to take to the ice next season. The ex-
ecutive has a lot. of work to do to prepare.
for next season, but the coaches have
already begun establishing player con-
tacts for next year. The hockey fans of
Goderich should be able,to look forward to
a better year for the Sailors in 1987-88.
