The Goderich defensive play was solid but it was the spectacular work of goaltender Jay Williamson that held Strathroy to one. goal. On a down note, the team received word that they lost their protest of the first game against Strathroy, An appeal is ensuing but the league ruled that the team should have had a representative In the penalty box area to catch any mistakes. On Wednesday Williamson and Rod Nurse were the key players for Goderich. The game was a hard hitting contest which provided many solid hits. for the fans. Goderich started slowly but weathered the first couple of minutes with some outstan- ding saves from Williamson. Action was end to end as each team, went after -the other. In the second period, action continued with Goderich handling out the more punishiri-g hits, Hut Strathroy would tie it up at 12:59 just after Goderich had almost scored at the other end:-Goderich began W take the upper hand in the game and as a result, the Strathroy team sent a player onto the ice to instigate something. He tried to take on Nurse who punished the player. More importantly though, it seem- ed to turn the game in favour of Goderich. • In the third period Goderich 'hado two- man advantage because of the earlier inci- dent. Darrell Durnin finished off a three- way passing; play to score the eventual winner. Durnin passed to Tom Bean on the right point wno sent it in to Gary Erb in the corner. Erb spotted Dtirnin coming into the slot, fed him the pass which tie put in the top corner. What .was left of the Goderich team, four defence and seven forwards and Williamson, fought off any Strathroy attack. In fact Goderich may have had the best scoring opportunity with a two on one but the shot was put up over the net into the stn ds. After this win-rnd the decided loss against them, Goderich has a record of 5-3 in the ten -game round robin tournament., Goderich is tentatively scheduled to go to Amherstburg on March 1 and no date has been scheduled for the home match against Belle River. It is believed that Strathroy leads the playoffs with 12 points: A.mherstburg is next with 11 points and Goderich is tied with Belle River with 10 points. Tonight, the Sailors take on the Port Elgin Bears at 7:30 p.m. Friday they host the Wingham Ironmen at 8:30 p.m. . The Sailors go into these games with a 0-4 record, following losses last weekend to the .Same two teams. Saturday, in a game played in Southampton, the Sailors were drubbed 12,1 ,by the Bears. Sunday, play- ing at home, the Sailors lost 9-4 to the' Ironmen. The Sailors had a good first period Satur- . day, scoring the first goal when Shawn Larder took a pass Erom Dave Duncan and beat Mike Rourke in the Port Etgin goal. Doug McFarlan notched singles. • The Sailors lost the services of defencemanJim Beattie who suffered bruised ribs and a shoulder injury,' Beattie who 'has had an excellent 'season, was recently chosen as the team's rookie of the year. The Sailors, after their home games this week, finish their,playoffs with, games Saturday ,.against Port Elgin and next Tuesday, in Wingham. The team winning the round-robin will advance to the league finals against the winner of the Hanover - Walkerton semi-final Series. The, Port Elgin Bears lead the round-robin with an unblernished 4-O'record,so far. • Elevator Bantams play tough despite two losses Last Thursday evening the Goderich Elevator Bantams played one of their best desciplined games in the O.M.H.A" playdowns but cavae up on the short end of the score losing 6-5 to Strathroy. ' The Goderich team definitely had the edge in the play' even though they trailed 1,0 after the first 10 minutes. Early in the second period the teams traded goals with Brian Lane scoring assisted by Andre Cauchi to even matters but only six seconds later Strathroy again took the lead. • Goderich out -hustled their opposition for 'the next four minutes resulting in a tying' goal by Tim Harrison on a tip in from defenseman Mike Stegenstad's shot. However the Strathroy club again scored quickly only fourteen seconds later and then added another a minute inter to take a 4-2 Lead, Greg Alcock made several nifty moves as he raced from end to end to score the third Goderich goal with'an assist go ing to Kevin Moss. Within a minute Strathroy regained their two goal advantage as the period drew to a close hut the Goderich squad with George Sideris doing some excellent forechecking scored a. goal on a pass from Brian lane with only 35 seconds left in the period. Sideris again in the.third period worked hard to pull Goderich within a goal when he scored his second of the night a neat pass from Andre Cauchi with 1:45 remain- ing nn the Hook Tt !nuked os if the Strathroy goal scored 38 seconds into the third period would prove to be, the winner but Goderich •came close with Sideris' goal and they had a golden chance to•tie the score with only seconds, left in the game. On Sunday (otierich travelled to Amherstburg to meet a rough, aggressiire team. The home team opened the scoring early in the first period. Gotlerich respond= ed within a minute on an unassisted goal by Brian Lane: The teams traded goals again before the end of the period which featured hard-hitting hockey: Goderich's gdal was scored by Andre Cauchi, assisted by 'Greg Alcock who dug hard to free the puck for Cauchi. In 'the second period Goderich went ahead when George Sideris beat the goalie clearly on a breakaway play set up by, ,Jason Million and Cauchi. This lead did' not hold up as Arhherstburg went up by one on two power play goals. Goderich had some excellent chances and played good steady hockey with Shawn Currie working hard in net. In the third period with both teams tir- ing Amherstburg scored once to win the game 5-3. Again in this game the locals put in an excellent performance with all players working welt. Coach Paul Kelly was very pleased with his team's efforts in both these games. Next action Monday night in Strathroy. • Brent i)ow was the winner Of the 50-50 draw held recently. Interclixb skate set for Seaforth Peopi. in the Seafbrth and surroariding .area will have the opportunity shortly to see amatuer skating at its best. On Sunday, Marfh 1, the Seaforth; and District Community Centres will be the location of an interclub skating competition, for skaters in the northern district of Southwestern Ontario. Approximately l5) skaters of all ages, from the corrimurnjt'ic?s'i)f Goderich, C1lititM'i, Blyth, Mitchell, r onkton, Lucknow, Brussels, Wingham, Listowel, Milverton, Strathroy, St. Marys and Seaforth will par- ticipate in a full day of, competition. The competition is an annual event set up to develop the talent of area skaters and to give them the opportunity to compete against skaters from outside their own community.
