• The Goderich Old Deckhands would be
.hard`pressed to offera rebuttal to the,fact •
they have been less than congenial hosts at
the annual Old Deckhands Olcl Timers
Hockey Tournament.
A more congenial host Might allow the
.guests 'a win or two or maybe even a goal;
but the OldDeckhands again played strong •
two-way hockey `to successfully defend a
division c•hampi.onship.
Last year the Deckhands won the Bed-
ford 'Arms Division and this year, behind
the supealative goaltending of Rick Palma,
Goderich allowed just one goal and won
four straight games to win the Singal-Star
Division of the its annual tournament.
In other` play Sunday, the Fergus.
Ofdtimers'won the Bedford Arms Division
with" a :3-2 victory over the Clinton Foul.

„Brewers defeated the McFrock's Old Mug-
gers tolay 'claim to"the Goderich Elevator,
Division,• The game had ended • in -a
scoreless tie and two overtiine`periods fail-
ed to produce a winner. Mt. Clemens
wound up winning 6-5 after the four shoot-
outs.
The Goderich Old Dec,k•hands had to be
the 'stingiest team. in the 14 -team tourna-
ment allowing just one goal over' four
games and • that tight defensive style
helped the olcist rs to a second tournament
championship.
In the final, • Goderich. defeated
Mississauga 2-0,- as Palma • collected hia
third straight shutout of the tournament,
He was rewarded with the division's most
valuable player award. After giving up a
single goal to Oshawa Friday, Palma shut •
the door on the opposition in the remaining
three games of the tournament while the
offence took care of business at the other
end.
In the final game, Terry Miller scored
what proved to be the winning goal in the
first period, converting a pass from team-
mate Scott Macaufay. Goderich increased
its lead to two goals as speedy Jim Fairish•
credit for that stingy performacne mostgo to Goderich goaltender Rick Palle, shown

. In Goderich's first game Friday, Ron
Miller scored one goal and set up another
as the Deckhands defeated .Oshawa 4-1.
• Miller scored the first Goderich goal in the
opening period with Buck Million
assisting.
Goderich increased its lead to two goals
in the second period as Wayne Doak scored
from Miller and' Bill Martin and then
Millerscored the third Goderich goal on a
nifty backhander after taking a pass in the
slot from Frank Hagan.
Oshawascored late in the second period
to reduce the Goderich lead to 3-1 as John
.Jarman would be the only player to score
against Goderich. •
Goderich put the game away as Farrish
scored the fourth goal with Rick Sowerby,
the game's MVP, assisting.
In its second game Saturday morning,
Goderich got goals from Ron Miller and
Scott Macaulay to defeat' Mississauga 2-0.
Miller scored what proved to be the winn-
ing goal early in the first period, com-
pleting a passing play with linemates Paul
Corriveau and Farrish. Macaulay added
an insurance goal -in the second with Jim
Hayter and Carm Fielder assisting.
Goderich won its third straight game of
the tournament.in a ,1-0 classic against the
London Old Timers. The teams played.
through a scoreless first period and
Goderich scored the only goal of the game

Palla, who earned his second straight
shutout, was. selected the game's most

ELEVATOR DIVISION
To suggest.. that, the .Mt. Clemens .
Brewers and McFrcick's 'Ol'd Muggers
were evenly matched ' is - an understate-
ment. The two teams played each other
twice in.the Goderich Old Deckaknds Tour-
nament and ended up even iragoals for and •
against after. eight periods of hockey and.
•four shoot-out sessions. •
The Old Muggers won the first game bet—
ween
ween the teams, 2-1 but it was the Brewers
who, prevailed in the division final, winning
6-5 after two overtime periods and four
shoot-outs. .,
The charnpronship- game -ended in " a
scoreless- tie and overtime failed to •pro-
duce a winner. It then took four shoot-outs
before the Brewers 'won 6.5 over their
Michi-garr • counterparts. Larry Charles;
who scored two goals in the final, was the
most valuable player. •
Mt. Clemens hammered Port Stanly 7-0
and played Orangeville to a scoreless tie.
McFrock's beat Port Stanley 10-0, Mt.
Clemens.2-1 and Orangeville 3-1 before los-
ing its first game in the final.
BEDFORD DIVISION
It took two overtime periods before
Fergus scored to defeat Clinton 3-2 to win
the Bedford Division Sunday. Fergus had
led 2-0 after one period but Clinton fought
back with goals by Paul Draper andGreg
Burns to send the game into overtime.
Turner's goal in the overtime clinched it
for Fergus. .
Earlier Clinton defeated Fergus 2-1 and
Wingharn 4-0 before losing to Kincardine
4-2. Fergus defeated Kincardine 3-1 and
London 7-0 in reaohing the division
championship.
Tweens defeat St. Marys in two straight games
The Goderich 'l'weelns defeated St.
Marys in two straight games on the
weekend to win its opening round ringette
playoff series.
While the 'Teens may • have won the
best -of -three preliminary round in two
straight games, it took some spirited play
to dispose of a stubborn St. Marys team.
Goderich won the first game in St.
Marys Friday 9-6 in double overtime and
then wrapped the series with a fine 3-0 win
at home Sunday.
The win in St. Marys Friday was a
dramatic, nail -biter as • the Goderich
Tweens surrendered a sec'6nd period lead
but battled back to win the game with a

flumy of goals late in the second overtime
period.
Goderich trailed 2-1 after the first period
but rebounded to outscore St. Marys 4-3 in
.the second period to produce the 5-5 tie.
Each team scored once in the first 'over-
time, St, Marys goal coming with five
seconds remaining.
The Tweens clinched the win, outscoring
St. Marys 3-0 in the secondovertime period
to win 9-6.
Trisha Rumig was the offensive leader
for Goderich scoring five goals, including
the eventualganie winner in the second
overtime period. Team-mate Jennifer
Hamilton scored the other four Goderich
goals.
Angie Harrison had three assists in the
game and Stacey Clarence and Alesha
Glousher set up two goals apiece. Leslie
Brereton and Christine Melick,also had
assists in the game.
The game here Sunday waa More Of a
defensive battle between the teams as
Goderich led 1-0 after one period and add-
ed two goals in the second period to win the
game 3-0 and the"aeries in two straight
games.
(Clarence scored what proved to be the
winning goal early in the first period with
Hamilton and Harrison assisting on the
play.
The game remained close until the final
minutes when Goderich scored twice to put
the game away" Rumig scored the second
Goderich, goal with Rhonda Horton and
Jackie Crawford assisting and, Hamilton
scored from Harrison and Clarence to
clinch the wire.
The team, coached by Angie Chisholm,
will now enter the second round of
playoffs. i
Midget Bs win consolation title at Tournament
The Goderich Midget Bs lost the opening
game of the Exeter Bears Midget B Tour-
nament on the weekend but 'rebounded to
win two straight games to win the tourna-
ment consolation championship Saturday.
After an opeiaing round loss to London 4-2
Saturday morning, the midgets turned
things around and defeated Kincardine 4-3
in the afternoon semi-final and then ham-
mered Strathroy 6-2 in the consolation
championship.
The final game was evenly matched for
two periods but Goderich, despite playing
its third game of the day, found the scoring
touch in the final period, scoring four

game late in the second period but it was a
goal by Darren Stanhury in the final,
minute of the second period that seemed to
ighite the midgets. The goal put Goderich
ahead 2-1 heading into a final period they
dominated. -
Stanbury scored his second goal of the
game just 30 seconds into the final period
while Goderich was a man short and the
rout began. Tim Wilson scored the fourth
Goderich goal and Stanbury, with his third
of the game, and Chambers, with his se-
cond completed the Goderich scoring.
Strathroy got. one goal back before the
end of the game but Goderich coasted to
the win.
In the semi-final game, Goderich got a
shorthanded goal from Tim Wilson in the
third period and it proved to be the winner
as Goderich defeated Kincardine 4-3.
Goderich led 2.0 after one perfod on
powerplay goals by Stanbury and .Jeff
Boyce. Wilson assisted on both goals.
Goderich increased its lead to three
goals as Ian MacGillivray scored early in
the sebond but Kincardine fought back
• with two goals to narrow•the Goderich lead
to 3-2.
Wlison's goal in the third put the midgets
ahead 4-2'and Kincardine scored to make it
4-3 midway thrbugh the final period but
Strathroy came up with a goal with less
than two minutes remaining in the game to
earn a 3-3 tie with Goderich in OMHA
round robin playoff action in Strathroy
Saturday. •
Goderich led the game on three separate
occasions but each time Strathroy fought
back with the tying goal. Goderich took a
3-2 lead midway through the final period as
Brandon Corriveau converted a pass from
team-mates John McDonald and James
Moody.
However, with less than two minutes re=
main.ing in regulation time, Brett Boden
scored his third goal of the game for
Strathroy to•pull out the tie.
Goderich took,a 1-0 lead as Trevor
Macaulay scored the only goal of the first
period on,an unassisted effort,
Strathroy tied -the game 1-1 in the second
period only to have Goderich score 30
seconds later.on another individual effort,
this time by Jason Volland,
Strathroy tied the game late in the third
period and.Goderieh pulled ahead on Cor-
riveau's goal in the third period before

MacGillivray scored in the final minute
of the game to reduce London's lead to 4-2.
Penalties hurt Goderich in the game as
London scored three powerplay goals.
Goderich was assessed eight minor
penalties compared to three for London.

Petites lose
5=4 to Exeter
Exeter outscored the Goderich Lions 3-1
in the second period to defeat the •Lions'5-4
in the first game of a best -of -three ringette
playoff series in.Hensall Saturday.
The second game of the• series will be
played in Goderich Sunday, March 1. •
Goderich led the game 3-2 after one
period of play but Exeter took control of
the game, outscoring Goderich 3-1• in the
second period to win•the game 5-4.
Terri' Duckworth led• the Goderich of-
fence with three goals. She scored twice in
the, opening period- and scored the lone
Goderich goal, in the second period. Alyson
13aer scored the ether.goalfor the Petites.
Karen Harrison chipped in with two'
assists and Kristine IVIclvor, Sherry Hogan
and Erin Purser had one assist each.

Huron Park scored a goal with just over
three minutes left in regulation time to
break .• up „a 4-4' tie as they- defeated
Goderieh 5-4 in Huron , Perth league play

Goderich scored twa goals in 14 seconds in
`the final minute or the period. to tie the
game. Jeff Klages scored the first goal
from Jason Meriarn and then •Meriam tied
the .score ' 14 seconds later converting a

scored two goals each to produce the 5-4

Klages, with his second goal of the
game, scored the third Goderich goal.and
Darnell Connelly scored the fourth
Goderich goal from David Bogie. Mark
Glavin scored two goals for Huron Park.
On Friday at 5:30 p.m. the Blue and
White teams play in house league action.
Bunnies lead
A team effort led the Wal1hangers to a five'
point win 'over the Blazers. High games
from Trish Deighton 201, Sandy Fielder 231,'.
607, Dianne Scott 230, 616 and Sinn Smith 264,
671 triple. The Blazers carne away with two
points led by Gladys Nicholson 183, Earleen
Spain 186, Heather Jackson 208, Joyce
Hamilton 237. Marilyn Bannister 262, 693,
,led the. Marionettes to a five point gain over
the Oldtimers, with help from Ett Bradley
208, and Audrey Brindley 213, 611• triple. The
Oldtimers took two points• with good games.
from Melba Maillet 223 and Bev Million 246.
Barb's Bunnies are still holding down first
place as they took five points from Auleen's
Angels. High rollers were Joyce Pettus 185,
Mary Lynne Telford 216, 225, 606, Shirley
Kennedy 693 triple. The Angles fought back
to take two points 1ed°by Grace Mugford 189,
Kay Glen 194, Vicki Dineen 214, Auleen
Theriault 229 and Brenda Dineen 223, 628 tri-
ple. The New -Gals were bowling against 100
per cent of their average and took two
points.

Howell game
Eleanor Erskine and Mary Donnelly
finished first with 43 points when a four -
table Howell game was played by the
Goderich Duplicate Bridge Club at the
Legion Monday, Feb. 16. Eleanor. Erskine
directed.
Nuala Conlori and Anna Godley finished
second with 38 points and the teams of
Louis and Joan Stadelmann and John and
Theresa Donatis tied with 33 points. r,
Dawna Sproule and Mary,Ann Dempsey
topped the North-South division of play
with 125.5 points at the Feb. 17th meeting
of the club. Ten tables were involved in a
Mitchell game directed by Cathy Mac-
Donald and the average score was 108
points.
Bill Bradley and John Donatis finished
second with 122 points while Pat Stringer
and Cathy MacDonald were third with 115
and Rosanne and Graham Yeats, -fourth
withl3.
Joaai• anis Cam Addison combined for 124
points to take first plat in the East-West
division ahead of Bill Duncan and Ralph
Kingswell with 121 points.
"Joanne Gilchrist and Lee Ryan finished
with 116 points and Jean Papernick and
Rola Moore had 109.5 points.
