Dear Editor:
•Last week you carried a letter entitled
"Reader criticizes attitude at meeting",
signed by Deanna Such. The letter invites a
response, although it is not at all clear how
one should go about jt, because the letter's
message remains something of a mystery.
At first I thought that, being a member of
the committee who helped with the ! repara-
tion of the Recreation Master P :. d
Feasibility Study, I might be standing t
close and cannot seethe forest for the trees.
When I'asked severalother persons who had
attended the Feb. 10 public meeting, to in-
terpret how the conclusions in Ms. Such's
letter relate to the meeting in question, I en-
countered a puzzled reaction similar to my
own.
' My lines are not intended to defend the
meeting I it does not need it I or to put Ms.
Such down for having expressed her views.
My aim is to asstire that the reaction of the
general public to this major community pro-
ject would not be side tracked, but should be
kept to the point, dealing with facts and
realities, as much as possible.
At the public meeting in question the con-
sultants, John A. Stevenson Associates from
Toronto, presented theTir findings and
recommendations concerning the feasibility
study they had been commissioned to do.
The study was to determine the kind of
recreational facility the vesidents ,of our
town ( and to some extent, the residents "of
the surrounding area) would like to see, if
all went well.
Working on the project for nearly a year,
the consultants had used many direct, and
indirect methods of obtaining as wide a
range of public views and input as possible.
Extensive.newspaper coverage had kept the
;tqn informed of the progress of this under-
taki . There had 'been several public,
meeting of which the entire town's
households ere notified by door-to-door
notices, paid fo by a number of local in-
dustries. We were racticalfy begging for
public input. Everybody' of every age group
found ears eager to, listen ,`Public interest
and response was very good.'
I find it sadly disturbing that Ms` --Such
Saw reason to feel "ashamed and disap
pointed in -the approach or more,important-
ly, the attitude of the 'Fold guard" or
authority in the town, towards the youth". I
find it disturbing, because such a conclusion'

'does not resemble the reality known to me.
I am completely at a loss when Ms. Such
says that "once again, the "young people of
this town. i under the age of 50) have been
told that given the chance or given the
privilege" of using such a community
acility, then abuse of the facility will cer-
tainly follow". • Were. we' at the same
meeting?
' I do not see how it was possible to con-
clude from anything said at the meeting that
"once again youth are told "See what we
have done for you! Now sit and feel guilty
about it!" With. due respect, this is
ridiculous.
1 do not know Ms. Such and I cannot im-
'agine what past disappointments might
have led her to the very bitter outlook she
has expressed, but 1 }'aye no hesitation in
saying that it is totally unfair to .attempt to
have it cast an 'unrelated shadow over the
project and the people in question.
Who or what is the "old guard" who ig-
nores or worse, humiliates young, people and
wants to make thein feel guilty? Ms. Such
would or could hardly apply this designation
to the out-of-town consultants who are the
° sole authors of the report. ,
The other individuals who are, so far,
associated with the project, in a supportive
role in the background, are the local com-
mittee members of whom I am one. As
anybody else could have done, we offered
our participation quite simply because we
Dear Editor:
To, those people_.who: attended a meeting
on drug awareness sponsored by the
Goderich Lioness Club at St. Mary's School
on Jan. 20,, last, a; belated and heartfelt
thank you. Our club was very pleased, and,
. frankly, amazed at the number of people
who came out that evening.
We believe that an interest does exist in
the town ' and surrounding area in the
prevention of the problems caused by illicit
drugs in' any form. For this reason, -we are
attempting to arrange another meeting,
,probably the latter part of April, and we are
° in the process of lining up a guest speaker
for such a meeting. Wehope you will again
attend and bring with you any of your
friends who might be interested.
If you have an idea as to whom you would
like to hear from at meetings of this kind,
please contact me at 524-9427 and our club
will endeavour to keep this program going
for as long as the community sees a need.
Sincerely,
GODERICH LIONESS CLUB

believe in the importance of recreational
services and because we like to put our work
where our words are,
The support cornmittee is part of the nor-
mal process of such studies. It happens to
represent 'a cross-section of the community
and has been, at all times, keenly aware of
the entire population, young and old.
Incidentally, in purely personal terms -
am I part of some "old guard" stuff? I know
that I should not be flippant, but I am temp-
ted to point put that to some people I am a ,
revolutionary and anarchist.
The consultants will present their product
( and the report is theirs alone) to the town
council at a special meeting on Monday,
March 16, at 7 p.m. in the town hall on West
Street. Do,come and hear for yourself what
it reveals about otir recreation and what is
recommended for the future. The Master
Plan is a comprehensive document and the
Feasibility Study deals with a suggested
major facility. '
The consultants' recommendations
words and pictures) are only conceptual
proposals responding to our community's
ideas, suggestions, dreams, When and how
the implementation mechanism is set in mo-
tion depends entirely on the town council,
with community involvement, interest and
support.
As it is the case with any major project.
anywhere, the proposed aquatic centre will'
have its• shareof opponents listing reasons
why it cannot be done. I am counting on peo-
ple who (young, old, in-between) live by the
principle that "the impossible takes a little
longer''. In whichever category you place
yourself - please, give it a chance:
