It may be hard for many people to think
about summer in°early March, but it will be
here before you know it. Employees of the
Canada Employment Centre for S ents
CELS) in Goderich and Exeter cert inly
know suinmer is coming and they are vev
busy planning for it. Once again the offic s
are open and ready to serve area students
and a rployers.
This year's supervisor, Janice Dunbar, is
expecting last year's orerwhelrning success
to continue. A large number of employers
and students used the services offered by
the Centre with,good results•.
Janice, has been busy distributing infor-
mation on the various government pro-
grams to potential employers within the'
community. The focus of the Federal
Government's Challenge '87 Program is to
provide career or work-related summer
employment for students. One particular
program, Summer Employment Ex-•
perience •Development [SEED), provides
.wage subsidies to employers who create a
summer job for a student. . •
Provincial Programs of interest include
Experience •'87, which places students in
Hy ro transmission
positions within Ontario Government
ministries; Student Venture Capital, which
provides loans to students to create their
own summer employment; and the Ontario
Summer Employment Program i OSEP ),
which offers employers a wage subsidy to
hire students.
Students are encouraged to register riow
dg;e
at the CECS, and to take advant of the

tion forms, resume writing and counselling

more industry, and take more farmland_
out of production. •
"It's the secondary effects•is what we're
really concerned about. How large wilt
London will become with 15,000 acres
about to be annexed by the city? Is that the -
stewardly thing to do as every acre is uni-
que in its production ability," he said, ad-•
ding that the hydro corridor•will be supply-
rng,London with five times as much power
as it really needs.. •
• He also spoke out against. Hydro's claim •
that the corridor will .make the inter-
change of power easier between Ontario
and Michigan, saying- Ontario Hydro
should not be subsidizing the Americans
with cheap hydro.
. . "The • real reason they're [ Ontario
Hydro) coming through with the line is to
be near the Michigan utilites. Should.
agricultural land have to pay • the cost to .
have Americans' get cheap, • subsidized
power that Hydro has in surplus? I don't .
think- it's fair," he said,' adding that the
line from -London to Nanticoke will disrupt'
farmland in Kent and Essex Counties. •
However, 'he said the Foodland. Hydro .
Committee may be Qom), but its certainly
not out. He said the committee wi11 meet .
shortly to "pick up the pieces and find out
where we're going from here.'`'
Tony McQuail,. the Chairman of the
Foodland Hydro Committee, could not be
reached for .comrnent.
• According to Donna Prout,'an assistant
corporate relations officer with Ontario •
Hydro, the corridor through the area was
necessary. to fully incorporate the
generating capacity from the BNPD into.
the electrical system serving Ontario con-
sumers. The line from the.BNPD would-
-also permit the "interchange of electrical
• power" between'• Ontario Hydro and.'the•
Michigan Electrical Co-ordinated System.
