The Goderich Old Deckhands will attempt to repeat as
division champions as the team hosts -its annual three-day
oldtirners hockey tournament here on the weekend.
The Deckhands' annual tournament unfolds here on the
weekend with 14 teams competing in three separate divi-
sions. A total of 24 ganies will be played from Friday even-
ing through to the division championship ganies Sunday
afternoon.
Last year the Old Deckhands defeated Forest 3-2 to win
the Bedford Division championship as 12 teams competed.
This year, the Bedford and Signal -Star divisions will
feature five teams while the Elevator Division wilt go with
four entries. •
The Elevator Division is comprised of Port Stanley,
Orangeville Old• Buy's and two American entries, Mt.
Clemens Brewers and McFrocks Old Muggers.
The Bedford Arms Division features the Fergus
ld.timers tournament
uldtimers, Wingham Old Rockers, Kincardine
Bullshooters, Clinton Foul Ups aid London Old Timers.
This year, the Old Deckhands will compete in the
Signal -Star Division with Oshawa Toro, East London Old
Sports c winners of the Elevator Division last year r,
Mississauga Old Bucks and Windsor Leisure Lake and
Gold Star.
Play begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. as Kincardine takes on
Clinton and Wingharn and London will follow at 7:40 p.m.
Oshawa plays the host Goderich team at 8:50 and that will
be followed by Orangeville and Mt. Clemens 'at 10 p.m.
and Port Stanley will play McFrocks at 11:10 p.rn.
First roupd divisional play continues Saturday morning
with East London playing Windsor at 7:30 a.m. and
Fergus playing London Old Timers at 8:40 a.m. Goderich
plays its second, game of the tournament against
Mississauga at 9:50 a.m. and Port Stanley play's
Orangeville at 11 a.m.
Round 2 divisional play begins at 12:10 p.m. Saturday
and Goderich plays its second of the day at 6 p.m. against
London Old Timers.
Inter -divisional play continues until 12:40 pin. Sunday.
The divisional championship games will be played Sun-
day afternoon. The Elevator Division final game will go at
2 p.m. and will be followed by the Signal -Star Division
championship at 3:30 p.m. The championship game of the
Bedford Arms Division is scheduled for 5 p.rn.
Trophies and plaques will be awarded to the members
of the winning teams in the auditorium following the
games.
The top two teams in each division will earn a berth in
the championship game Sunday. Division leaders will be
determined by total points after three games. Goals for
and goals against will be used as determinants

Sailors lose two games in pl

The Goderich Sailors' lost -the first two
games of their three -team round-robin
playoff series last weekend. Friday, here,
• the Sailors put up a good battle for two
periods but weakened•in the third and saw
the Port Elgin, Bears outscore them .6-1 to •
ice a 971 victory. Sunday in Wingham, ,the
Sailors again played some good hockey but
emerged in the short end of a 7-4 score. In
the other weekend, game, 'the Bears
defeated Wingham 7-3 -and are now in the .
lead in the series with a 2-0 record. '
The Sailors travel to Port Elgin Satur-
day.night for their next game and then
play against Wingham here Sunday even-
ing at 7:30 p.nr.
The game here Friday with Port Elgin
provided typical playoff hockey. The
Sailors struck with their checks and
played •well defensively; but had difficulty
finding th.: net. Port Elginled 2-0 after the
first period. on goals'by Ken Feddeina and
, Kevin Pollock 'who added one more in the
second period. •
In the third period, the Sailors ran out of
legs and the Bears turned what had been a
close encounter into a rout. '
Mike Chennette and Ian Brooks scored.

The lone Sailor reply was a.goal scored
by defenceman Bryon Boumara as he
finished off a nice play with Scott Stokes
and Richard Doig.
The game was a lot closer territorially
than the final score. would make it. sound..
Both teams • stuck to hockey, with the,:
Sailors taking 13 minor penalties and the
Bears 16. At. the conclusion of the game,
referee Laurence Ray skated over to the
Sailor bench to congratulate the Sailor
coaches Dick Madge' and Dale Duncan on
the discitilined yet aggressive' game their
tarn had played.
The Sailors played' quite well in
Wingharn too, and at times held a distinct
yoff series
Continuing the GDCI tradition of winn-
ing, the girls school curling team captured
the Huron -Perth Curling•Trophy last week.
The team, skipped by Tanya Jeffrey
clobbered Listowel 12-1 in the first game,
then took a close win from Wingham 6-5.
-That game was a real "nail -biter", said
coach Doug Bundy, They were two up
coming home but just about gave it away
with some bad sweeping calls. Fortunately
the' Listowel skip rolled out on her final
stone."
Because of.a skiing injury to regular
vice -skip Jennifer MacKinnon, a last-
minute replacement had to be found.
-Katharine Murphy, who has not curled at
all this year, filled in admirably", said
Coach Bundy.
Other team members included Crystal
Bissett at second and Laurie Pentland at
lead.
The team will be competing in the
WOSSA curling , championships at the
Ivanhoe curling club in London on March
6th.

Dan Gilchrist, who attended the Sailors
training camp but left , when the team
almost folded before the season . began,
scored five goals for the Ironmen. Brad
Priestap and Tim Brown had the other
Wingham goals.
Chris Sideris, Bruce Culbert, Todd
Graham and Richard Boddy scored the
Sailor goals.

Newly acquired Sailor 'goaltender Gary
Hartman played well. His debut against
PortElgin here last Tuesday in the Sailors
last game .of the regular schedule was par-
ticularly impressive, despite the Bears 7:5
victory.
Jamie Wilson, Mike Duncan and Ian
Brooks had two goals apiece for the Bears.
John McPherson had the other Port Elgin
goal.

Legion Midgets split weekend playoff
The Goderich legion Midgets resumed
play in ()MHA playoffs last weekend, split-
ting two games.
On Saturday;lit home, ( Goderich defeated
Sarnia Twp. 7-4. Goderich was all over
,Sarnia in the first period and ran up a,3-0
score. Toni Bean opened the scoring when
he completed a play with Mike Radford.
Rod Nurse scored the next one from Byron
Bowman and Mark Cauchi, Mike Beange
cempleteci the first period scoring as he
connected with linemates Bean, and
Cauchi. All three goals were scored on the
powerplay.

Million let a low blast go and beat the
goalie to make it 4-0. Radford assisted on
the play. Darrell Durnin scored the fifth
goal from Gary Erb and Nurse to make it
5-0. Then the fireworks started, as Sarnia
turned the game into their own version of
the Valentine's Day Massacre. There were
four fights before the period ended as Sar-
nia gave up hope for the game.
Each team traded goals to make it. 6-i
after two periods. Mark Cauchi scored on a
breakaway pass from Bowman.After a
lengthy delay between periods because of
the sorting out of penalties, the third
4period started and Sarnia outscored
pderich 3-1. Scott Glew scored
Goderich's loneg oal from Cauchi and Dur-
nin. There was a total of 118 minutes in
penalties with Sarnia receiving the,
, majority.
On Sunday the Midgets travelled to Belle
River and suffered a disappointingt3-0 loss.
The game was quick paced and very close.

In the Feb. 6 game, Goderich spotted
Clinton a 1-0 lead, went on take a 2.1 lead in
the final period, and settled for a 2:2 tie as
Clinton scored late in the game. Duane
Goalies lead.
The Goderich Machinist Atoms played
strong two-way hockey and got excellent
goaltending from ,Jamie Redmond and
Chris Lyndon as they recorded two vic- n
tories in OMHA round-robin playoff action
on the weekend.
In a game played here Saturday,
Goderich broke open a close game with
two goals late in the final period to defe"at
Sarnia Township 6-3. On Sunday they
shutout Amherstburg 5-0 in Amlerstburg.

scored three times in the first period, add-
ed two in the second and went on to defeat
Goderich 6-1. Jeff Volland scored the lone
Goderich goal with i,eddy ' and Trevor

and held Goderich off the scoreboard to
record a 3-0 victory in round-robin play:

Ding had one goal each for the Sailors.
At the Sailors' Valentine Dance Satur-
day at the arena, awards were presented
to Sailor players based •on season's play.
Chris Sideris received an award for the top
gaol scorer while Shawn Larder took the
trophy for the most assists. Daryl Madge
was chosen as the team's top defenceman
and Ken Huff received the most dedicated
player award.

many chances., including,a breakaway but
could not capitalize: Goderich continued to
press but could not get the equalizer.
Goderich opened the game up to try to tie
it, but Belle'River scored twice while shbr-
thandec"i to quell any comeback attempts
from the Midgets.
The 4-2 Midgets are still awaiting word
on their appeal of the Strathroy game. The
Midgets host Strathroy Wednesday night
at 8:00. After.a close, exciting game last
time, the game shoulder ue to be a
classic.

The round robin play continued Sunday
with Mooretown providing the opposition.
Mooretown roared into a four -goal lead
early; in the third period and then had to
hold off a stubborn Goderich team, which
carne back to score three goals only to lose
5-3.
Mooretown led 2-0 after one period and
carried that two -goal lead into the final
period after a scoreless second period.
Mooretown scored twice in the opening
minutes of the final period to increase its
lead to 4-0 before Goderich got on the
.board with a goal .by Volland assisted by
Macaulay.,
Mooretown Scored again to regain its
four -goal lead midway through the period.
Goderich was persis$ent, though, and
came hack with two goals in a span of 45
seennds to reduce the MooretoWn lead to
5-3.
John MacDonald scored the second
Goderich goal W-ith Macaulay and Steve
I,i.nklaterassisting and then Linklater
scored from Brad Jones to put Goderich
back in the game with three minutes left.
The no :,ices were unable to score in the
final three minutes. Greg McLarty played
goal for the novices, replacing Dirk
Wolterbeek who was hospitalized after a
severe leg fracture two weeks ago.

ner after he neatly went around the
defence.
Sarnia scored in the first minute of the
second period and Goderich clung to its 3-2
lead heading into the final period. Hayter
put Goderich ahead by two goals scoring
on a breakaway but Sarnia scored with
minutes left in the game to narrow the
score to 4.23. .

Goderich ahe 5-3 and Bryan Hodge
scored into an empty net to complete the
game's scoring. •
in the game Sunday, Goderich again got
great goaltending, solid play from the
defence and some opportune offence as it
went on to defeat Amherstburg 5-0.
.Jason Hayter scored what proved to be
the'.winning.goal after he was sent into the
dear by, the defence. Chris Dixon put
Goderich ahead by two with the only goal
of the second period sliding the puck into
the bottom corner after going around the
net.
Goderich put the game away in the final
period scoring three times. Jeff Phelan
scored the third goal while being hooked to
the ice and 'Dixon scored his second of the
game. lifting a rebound over a sprawled
goaltender. Ingham completed the scoring
with an empty net goal.
The line of Ryan Farrish, Bryan Hodge
and Jeff Phelan played well in both games
for Goderich.
Goderich plays the final. game of the
round robin series Thursday against
,Strathroy.
Tweens rip
St. Marys 11®3
The Goderich Tweens scored seven
goals .in, the second period to defeat St.
Marys 11-3 to end the regular season with
an unblemished record in Ontario Ringette
Association play in St. Marys Sunday.
The Goderich Tweens got two -goal per-
formances from four different players
they recorded another win, ending the
season without a league. loss. Goderich
scored in the first minute of the game on
an unassisted effort by Alesha Glousher
and led A-1' after the first period. The
Tweens outscored St. Marys 7-2 in the final
period to win 11-3. .
Jennifer Hamilton, Tara Haylow, Trisha
Rumig and Angie Harrison scored two
goals apiece for: Goderich. Leslie
Brereton, Christina Melick and glousher
had the other goals for the Tweens.
Romig also collected four assists With
her two goals for a six -point night. Becky
.Harrison chipped in With two assists -while
Stacey Clarence, Rhonda .Horton, Melick
'and Glousher had one assist each.,
Bantams lose
inOMHA play
The Goderieh Bantam Elevators played
host to Sarnia Township last Saturday in
Ontario .Minor Hockey, 'Association
(OMHA) round robin playoff action.
Goderich got off ,to a good start with a
goal midway through the opening period
by Greg Alcock With the assist going to An-
dre Cauchi. This proved to be the only goal
for the local team as the op, isition
pumped in 14 goals before the enc )f the
two arid one half hour marathon.
Unfortiuneately, neither team had any
aspirations of winning the round-robin
series as only one winner advances from
the -preliminary round. This was reflected
in the play by both teams and condoned by
the officials.
Next Sunday the bantams are scheduled
to play in-Amherstburg.
Peewee Bs
defeat Clinton
Three Goderich Peewee B players
scored tw•agoals apiece to lead the team to
a 6-3 victory over Clinton in Huron -Perth
play Saturday in Clinton.
Brent Anderson, Marc Melick and Mike
Lebrun scored two goals apiece to lead
Goderich to t'he league win.
Goderich led 3-0 after one period as
Anderson scored two goals in the span of 20
seconds. Lebrun then scored - With one
minute left in the first period to boost
Goderich into a 3-0 lead.
Clinton got back in the game with two
goals•.in the second period but Goderich
restored its three -goal lead with goals by
Melick and Lebrun late in the second
period. Melick scored his second goal of
the 'game in the final period on ,an
unassisted effort.
Sam Hosack picked up two assists in the
game while team-mates Paul Hartin and
Jason Lebeau chipped in with one assist
apiece.

Betty and Ray Fisher finish,eed first with
29 points when Eleanor Erskinb directed a
four -table Howell' game at the Feb. 9
meeting of the Goderich Duplicate Bridge
Club.
Marg Hall and Mary Donnelly were se-
cond with 28.5•points and Eleanor Erskine
and John Donatis, third with 24.5 points.
The teams of Nuala Conlon anis Anna
Godley •and Bill Duncan and Ralph
Kingswell tied with 22.5 points.
Verna Worthy and John Wood combined
for 137.5 points to take the North-South sec-
tion of play at the club's member -guest
night Feb. 10. A ten -table Mitchell game
was played and the average score was 108.
P.K. Venkiteswaran and Aelian
Weerasooriya finished second with 125.5
points while Bill Bradley and John Donatis
were third with 117 points and Louise
Hetherington and Jean Papernick fourth
with 108:
Bill Duncan and Ralph Kingswell corn-
bined to win the East-West division with
129 points ahead of Theresa Donatis and
Fvy McDonagh at 122;5 points. Marian
1,ane and Barb Howe were third with 112.5

N
