14 -teams compete in three divisions of
The Goderich Old Deckhands will attempt to repeat as
division champions as the team hosts its annual three-day
oldtuners hockey tournament here on the weekend.
The Deckhands' annual tournament unfolds here on the
weekend with 14 teams competing in three separate divi-
sions. A total of 24 games will be played from Friday even-
ing through to the division championship games Sunday
afternoon.
Last year the Old Deckhands defeated Forest 3-2 to win
the Bedford Division championship as 12 teams competed.
This year, the Bedford and Signal -Star divisions will
feature five tearns While the Elevator Division will go with
four entries. ..�
'1'hc 'Elevator Division. is comprised of fort Stanley,
Orangeville Uld Boys and two American entries, Mt.
Clemens Brewers and McFrocks Old Muggers.
The Bedford Arras Division features the Fergus

ldtimers tournament

Uldtimers, Wingham Old Rockers, Kincardine
Bullshooters, Clinton Foul Ups and. London Old Timers.
This year, the Old Deckhands will compete in the
Signal -Star Division with Oshawa Toro, East London Old
Sports ( winners of the Elevator Division last year i,
Mississauga Old Bucks and Windsor Leisure Lake and
Gold Star.
Play begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. as Kincardine takes on
Clinton and Wingham and London will follow at 7:40 p.m.
Oshawa plays the host Goderich team at 8:50 and that will
be followed by Orangeville and Mt. Clemens at 10 p.m.
• and Port Stanley will play McFrocks at 11:10 p.rn.
First round divisional play continues Saturday morning
with East London playing Windsor at 7:30 a.m. and
Fergus playing London Old Timers at 8:40 a.m. Goderich
plays its second game of the tournament against
Mississauga at 9:50 a.m. and Port Stanley ' plays
Orangeville at 11 a.m.
Round 2 divisional play begins at 12:10 p.m. Saturday
and Goderich plays its second of the day at 6 p.m. against
London Old Timers.'
Inter -divisional play continues until 12:40 p.m. Sunday.
,The divisional championship games will be played Sun-
day afternoon, The Elevator Division final game will go at
2 p.m. and will be followed by the Signal -Star Division
championship at 3:30 p.m. The championship game of the
Bedford Arms Division is scheduled for 5 p.rn.
Trophies and plaques will be awarded to the members
of the winning teams in the auditorium following the
games.
The top two teams in each division will earn a berth in
the championship ganie Sunday. Division leaders will be
determined by total points after three games. Goals for
and goals against will be used as determinants

Sailors lose two garnes in playoff series

The Goderich Sailors lost the first two
games. of their three -team' round-robin
playoff series last weekend. Friday, here,
the Sailors put up a good battle for two
periods but weakened in the third and saw
the Port Elgin Bears outscore thein 6-1 to
ice a 9-1 victory. Sunday in Wingham, the
Sailors again played some good hockey but
emerged in the short end of a 7-4 score. In
the ' other 'weekend -game, the Bears
defeated Wingham 7-3 and are now ih the
lead in. the series with a 2-0 record.
The Sailors 'travel to Port Elgin Satur•
-
day night for .their 'next game and then
play against Wingham here Sunday everi-
ing at 7:30 p.m.
The game here Friday with Port 'Elgin
provided typical playoff hockey. The
Sailors struck with their checks and
played well defensively, but had difficulty
finding the net. Port Elgin led 2-0 after the
first period on goals by Ken Fedderna ani'.?"
Kevin Pollock w•ho added one more in the
second period.
In the third period, the Sailors ran out of
legs -and the Rears turned what had been a
•close encounter into a rout. '
• Mike ('hennette Ian Brooks scored
two goals each and lien Pederson and J,phn
McPherson had singles. .
The lone Sailor reply was a goal scored
by defenceman Bryon Bournan as' he
finished off a nice play with Seott Stokes
and Richard Doig.
The game was a lot, closer territorially
than the final score would make it sound.
Both teams .stuck to hockey, with the
Sailors taking"13 minor' penalties and the
Bears 16. At the conclusion of the game,
referee Laurence Ray skated •over to the
Sailor -bench to congratulate the Sailor
coaches Dick .Madge and Dale Duncan on
the disciplined yet aggressive game their
tam had played.?
The Sailors played quite well in
Wingham too, and at times held a distinct

Continuing the GDCI tradition of winn-
ing, the girls school curling team captured
the Huron -Perth Curling Trophy last week.
The team, skipped by Tanya Jeffrey
clobbered Listowel 12-1 in the first game,
then took a close win from Wingham 6-5.
-That game was a real "nail -biter", said
coach Doug Bundy, They were two up
corning home but just about gave it away
with some bad sweeping calls. Fortunately
the Listowel skip rolled out on her final
stone."
Because of a skiing injury to regular
vice -skip Jennifer MacKinnon, a last-
minute replacement had to be found.
"Katharine Murphy, who has not curled at
all this year, filled in admirably", said
Coach Bundy.
Other team members included Crystal
Bissett at second and Laurie Pentland at
lead. •
The team will be competing in -the
WOSSA 'c'urling championships at the
Ivanhoe curling club in London on March
iith.

Newly•acquired Sailor .goaltender Gary
Hartman played well. His debut against
Port Elgin here [eat Tuesday in the Sailors
last game of the. regular schedule was par-
ticularly impressive, despite the Bears 7-5
victory. •
;Jamie 'Wilson, Mike Duncan and Ian
Brooks had two goals apiece for the Bears.

Leon Midgets split weekend playoff
The Goderich legion Midgets resumed
play in OMHA playoffs last weekend, split-
ting two games.
• On Saturday at home, Goderich defeated
Sarnia Twp, 7-4. Goderich was all over
Sarnia in the first period and ran up a 3-0
score...Tom Bean opened the scoring when
he completed a play with Mike Radford:
Rod Nurse scored the next one from Byron
Bowman and Mark ('auchi. Mike Beange
completed the first period scoring as he
connected with linemates Bean and
('auchi. All three goals were scored on the
powerplay. •
Goderich scored twice more in the first

three minutes of the second period. Jason
•Million let a low blast go and beat the
goalie to make it 4-0. Radford assisted on
the play. Darrell Durriin scored the fifth
goal from Gary Erb and Nurse to make it
5-0. Then the fireworks started, as Sarnia
turned the game into their own version of
the Valentine's Day Massacre. There were
four fights before the period ended as Sar-
nia gave up hope for the game,
Each team traded goals to make it 6-1.
after,two periods. Mark Cauchi scored on a'
breakaway pass from Bowman.After a
lengthy delay between periods because of
the sorting out of penalties, the third
period, started and Sarnia outscored
Goderich 3-1. Scott Glew scored
Goderich's lone goal from Cauchi and Dur-
nin. There was a total of 118 minutes in
penalties with Sarnia receiving the
majority.
On Sunday the Midgets travelled to Belle
River and 'suffered a disappointing 3-0 Loss.
The game was quick paced and very close.
The first period was scoreles' which
nad a goal and two •assists for Goderich.
Jim Beattie, Darren Doak and Richard
Doig had one goal each for the Sailors.
At the Sailors' Valentine 'Dance Satur-
day' at .the arena. awards were presented
to Sailor players based on season's'play.
Chris Sideris received an award for'the top
gaol' soarer while Shawn' Larder took the
trophy for, the most assists. Daryl Madge
was chosen as the team's top .defenceman
and Ken Huff received the most dedicated
player award.,

seconds into period Belle River finally
scored to take a '1-0 lead. Goderich had
many chances, including a breakaway but
could not capitalize. Goderich continued to
press but could not get the equalizer.
Goderich opened the game up to try W tie
it; but Belle River scored twice while shor-
thanded t6 quell any comeback attempts
from the Midgets. '
The 4-2 ;Midgets are still awaiting word
on their appeal of the Strathroy game. The
Midgets host' Strathroy Wednesday night
at 8:00. After a close, exciting garne last
time, the ,game should prove to be a
• classic.
Garb and Gear Novices play four hockey games in one week

were busy the past week playing four
games. a
The novices tied Clinton 2-2 in a game in
Clinton Feb. 6 and dropped a ti 1 decision to
Sarnia Township in a game played here
Saturday, Feb. 7.
In gaiiies on the weekend in Goderich,
the novices were defeated 3-0 by
Walltliceburg Saturday and Sunday they
lost 5-3 to Mooretown.
in the Feb. 6 game, Goderich spotted
Clinton a 1-0 lead, went on take a 2-1 lead in
the final period and settled for a 2=2 tie as
Clinton scared late in the game. Duane
Leddy scored the 'first goal with Steve
Clarence and James Moody assisting. Jeff
Vollandthen scored on an unassisted effort
to put Goderich into the lead.
In a game Feb, 7, Sarnia Township
scored three times in the first period, add-
ed two in the second and went on to defeat
Goderich 6-1. Jeff Volland scored the lone
Goderich goal with Leddy and Trevor
Macaulay assisting. Ryan Gavigan scored
twice for Sarnia.
• In OMHA playoff action here Saturday.
Wallaceburge scored once in each period
and held Goderich off the scoreboard to
record a 3-0 victory in round-robin play.
The round robin play continued Sunday
with Mooretown providing the opposition.
Mooretown roared into a four -goal lead
early in the third period and then had lo
hold off a stubborn Goderich team, which
came back to score three goals only to lose
5-3, •
Mooretown led 2-0 after one period and
carried that two -goal lead into the final
period after a scoreless second period.
Mooretown scored twice' in the opening
minutes of the final period to increase its
lead to 4-0 before Goderich got on the
board with a goal by Volland assisted by
Macaulay.
Mont -Mown arnred again to regain its
four -goal lead midway through the period.
Goderich was persistent, though:' and
carne back with two goals in a span of 45
seconds to reduce the Mooretown lead to
,John MacDonald scored the second
Goderich goal with Macaulay and• Steve
Litiklater assisting and then Linklater
scored from Brad Jones to put Goderich
back in the game •,vith three minutes left.
The novices were unable to score in the
final thr'e minutes. (;reg McLarty played
goal for the novices, replacing Dirk
Woltcrbeek who was hospitalized after a
severe leg fracture two weeks ago.
Goalies lead Atoms to two wing in OMHA playoff
The Goderich' Machinist Atoms played
strong two-way hockey and got excellent
goaltending from ,Jamie "Redmond and
Chris Lyndon as they recorded two vic-
tories in OMHA round-robin playoff action
on the weekend. '
In a game played here Saturday,
Goderich broke open a close game with
two goals late in' the final period to defeat
Safnia Township 6-3. On Sunday they
shutout Amherstburg 5-0 in Amherstbtirg.

tied the game four minutes . later but
Goderich replied with two goals before the
end of the first period to lead 3-1.
Bill Ingham scored the second goal lif-
ting Jason Hayter's rebound over the
goalie and Andrew Scott, scored the third
goal as his low backhander found the cor-
ner after he neatly went around the
defence.
Sarnia scored in the first minute of the
second period and Goderich clung to its 3-2
lead heading into the final period. Hayter
put Goderich ahead by two goals scoring
on a breakaway but Sarnia scored with
minutes left in the game to narrow the
score to 4-3.

scored into an empty net to complete the

In the game Sunday, Goderich again got
great goaltending, solid play from the
defence •a . some opportune offence as it

Jason Ha- ter scored what proved to be
the winning goal after he was sent into the
clear by the defence. Chris 'Dixon • put
Goderich ahead by Awe with the only goal
of the second period sliding the puck into
the bottom corner after going around the
net. •
Goderich put the game away in the final
period scoring three times. Jeff Phelan
scored the third goal while being hooked to
the ice and Dixon scored his second of the
game, lifting a rebound over a sprawled.

with an'empty net goal.
The line of Ryan Farrish, Bryan Hodge
and Jeff Phelan,play'ed well in both games
for Goderich.
Goderich plays the final game of the
round robin series Thursday against
Strathroy.

Tweens rip
St. Marys 11-3
The Goderich" Tw•eens scored seven
goals in the second period to defeat St.
Marys 11-3 to end the regular season with
an unblemished record in Ontario Ringette
Association play in St. Marys Sunday.
The Goderich Tweens got two -goal per-
formances from •four different players
they recorded .another u win, ending the
season without a league loss. Goderich
scored in the first minute of the game on
an unassisted effort by Alesha Glousher
and led 4-1 after the first 'period. The
Tweens outscored St. Marys 7-2 in the final
period to win 11-3. "
Jennifer Hamilton, Tara Haylow, Trisha
Rumig and Angie Harrison -.scored two
goals apiece for Gederich. Leslie
Brereton, Christina Melick and glousher
had the other goals for the Tweens.
Rumig also collected four assists with
her two goals for a six -point night. Becky
Harrison chipped in with two assists while
Stacey Clarence,'Rhopda Horton, Melick
and'Glousher had one assist each.
Bantams lose
in OMHA play
The Goderich Bantam. Elevators played
host. to Sarnia Township last Saturday in
•Ontario Minor Hockey Association
i OMHA I round robin playoff action.
Goderich got off to a good start with i
goal midway through the opening period
byGreg Alcock with the assist going to An-
dre Cauchi. This proved to be the only goal.
for the local, team as the opposition
pumped in 14 goals before the end of the
'two and one half hour marathon.
Unl'ortuneately, neither team had any
aspirations of winning the round-robin
series as only one winner advances from•
the preliminary round. This was reflected
in the play by both teams and"condoned by
the officials.
Next Sunday the bantams are scheduled
td play in Amherstburg. •
Peewee Bs
defeat Clinton
Three Goderich Peewee B players
scored two goals apiece,to lead the team to
a 6-3 victory over Clinton in Huron -Perth
play Saturday in Clinton.
Brent Anderson. Marc Melick and Mike
Lebrun scored two goals apiece to lead
Goderich to the league win.
Goderich led 3-0 after one period as
Andet'son scored two goals in the span of 20 ,
seconds. Lebrun then scored with one
minute left in the first period.. to boost
Goderich into a 3-0 lead.
Clinton got hack in the game with two
goals i4i the second period but Goderich •
restored' its three -goal lead with goals by
Melick and Lebrun late in the second
period. Melick scored his second goal of
the game in the ' final period on an
unassisted effort.
Sam Hosack picked up two assists in the
game while team-mates Patfl Hartin and
Jason Lebeau chipped in with one assist
apiece.
Fishers win
Howell game
Betty and Ray Fisher finished first with
29 points when Eleanor Erskine directed a.
four -table Howell game at the Feb. 9
meeting of•the Goderich Duplicate Bridge
Club.
Marg Hall and Mary Donnelly were se-
cond with 28.5 points and Eleanor Erskine
and John Doriatis, third with 24.5 points.
The teams of Nuala Conlon and Anna
Godley and Bill Duncan and Ralph
Kingswell tied with 22.5 points, -
Verna Worthy and .John Wood combined
for 137.5 points to take the North-South sec- .
tion of play at the club's member -guest
night Feb. 10. A len-table Mitchell game
was played and the average score was 108.
P.K. Venkiteswaran and Aelian
Weerasooriya finished second with 125.5
points while Bill Bradley and John Donatis
were third with 117 points and Louise
Hetherington and Jean Papernick fourth
with 108.
Bill Duncan and Ralph Kingswellcom-
bined to win the East-West division with
129 points ahead of Theresa Donatis and
Evy McDonagh at 122.5 points. Marian
Lane and Barb Howe were third with 112.5
points and Jahe Cere and Ron 'Moore
fourth with 111 points.
