The Goderich Little Theatre I GLT 1 has
chosen a challenging piece of theatre for
its next production. The G1.T will stage
Paul Zindel's award-winning drama, "The
Effect of Gamma Rays on Man -in -the -
Moon Marigolds” at The Livery from Feb.
25 to 28 inclusive.
Professional thespian Steve Ballantine,
who has been hired by the GLT to direct
the production calls Zindel"s work "an im-
portant play sociologically."
••It's about the plight of the single
woman, trying to raise a family - and
she's not doing too good at it," Ballantine
said.
Ballantine's services were obtained
through the Canadian Actor's Equity
organization, a sort of "talent pool" which
makes professionals available to com-
munity theatre groups as a learning ex-
perience. Part of his salary is paid through
a grant from Theatre Ontario, an ad-
ministrative branch of the Ontario
Ministry of Citizenship and Culture.,
Trained as an actor at the University of
Windsor, Ballantine has also studied at the
Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, in
•London, England and done a directing ap-
prenticeship in Denmark, as well as work-
ing professionally in his native Toronto,
and other parts of the country. He has also',
had a great deal of experience in working
with community theatre groups, although
thisP roduction marks his first involve-
ment with the GI.T. Ballentine has been
impressed with' the quality of the talent
• and organization in the local threatre
troupe..
1'he actors are doing superbly. I'm
quite pleased with all of them;" he said of
the six-rrtember all female cast'of the pro-
duction which includes local residents
Jacki Rau, Terri Drenan. Becky Penn,.

The G1,1"s recent acquisition of The
Livery, is one of the contributing factors to
the group's ability to maintain that stan-
dard, according to Ballantine.
"The fact that they contain their own
space is a tremendous advantage," said
Ballantine, who is also working with group
in Pickering, where they have' to put he set
together on the day of the dress rehearsal
Only about 30 -per cent of the community
theatre groups in Ontario ar6lucky enough
to own their own building; Ballantine said
He says having their own building makes
the GLT one sof the more unique communi-
ty organizations.
"It speaks volumes about the intensity of
their involvement."
Ballantine also appla"uded the groups's
fortitude in making the decision to stage a
heavily dramatic play like "The Effect of
Gamma Rays on Mart -111 -the -Moon
Marigolds," when they found themselves
with insufficient actors to cast the
mystery -thriller they had originally plan-
ed to stage this time: One of the pluses of
doing this play f,or the group, said Ballan-
tine, is the fact that it involves young ac-
tresses (13 -17 -year's -old 1 as well as adults.
-That's one of the things I tried to Con-
vince the 4 G.I.'I' 1 executive of, was the need
to get young people involved. They are the
future of this theatre,"
The cast has been rehearsing for this
`production sine ( Dec. 17,
Ballantine
feels things are coming together quite
nicely.
"I imagine two things will happen at the
• end of this play - the audience will be stun-
ned by the intensity -- and, there won't he a
dry eye in the house."
