Sett hn skips Sine Backed by the experience and shot- making finesse of skip George Sutton, the ,,Suncoast Restaurant topped 16 entries in the Goderich Men's Slowpitch League Bonspiel to win the Labatt trophy. The Restauranteurs won all three games in the first draw of the one -day event Saturday at the Maitland Country Club amassing a point total of 46. They defeated Boyes Transport in the final. The team members included Sutton, Paul Brown, Ed Laithwaite and Randy Hilliard. They defeated Port Albert and Home Hardware in the other matches. Home Hardware settled for second place in the draw while Boyes finished third. Garb and Gear ran away with the second draw, finishing more than 19 points ahead'' 9f the Elevator 2 team. Terry Worsell, John Anderson, Don i Arnie) ' Parker and Dave Thurston curled the Gears to three straight wins' in the second draw. Ideal Supply took third spot in the draw while Sunny's was fourth. The. Chiefs with eight points and Chrysler .with 9, were the worst teams in their respective divisions. The one -day bonspiel was sponsored by the Slowpitch League. Goderich Midgets lose to Strathroy 6®5®..emaybe The Goderich Legion Midgets orfly played one of three scheduled games last week. Saturday's games were cancelled When the OMHA •refs failed to show and Belle River refused to use local referees. Sun- • day's game against Amherstburg . was cancelled because ,of the weather. The midgets did travel to Strathroy Feb: 3 and lost to Strathroy maybe. Goderich came out flying and scored three times in the first period. Barry Thompson opened the scoring from Dave - Duncan and Jason Million. Less than -a minute later Mike Beange scored to make it 2-0 with Torn Bean' and Mark 'Caurhi B tam AtIONSIPMEMEIMM MINOR HOCKEY - - assisting. Gary Erb added another com- pletinga play with Darrell Durnin and Neil Rodger to boost Goderich into a solid 3-0 lead. ° Strathroy would 'tied the game, scoring three goals in the second period, two bn the powerplay. ' Goderich went ahead 4-3 in the third period when I'an MacKinnon scored early. , Strathroy tied the game and then went ahead on two goals in a three-minute span. But Goderich did not give up and it resulted in Million hitting Byron bowman with a breakaway pass that he. scored on to tie the game 5-5. Strathroy scored the ap- parent winner with 41 seconds left in the game as Goderich got caught pressing for the winning goal. - • The game sheet 'indicates a Strathroy player,involved in the winning goal was to' have Nen serving a 10 -minute misconduct penalty. Goderich came out flying scoring three goals in the first four minutes and they continued the attack, dominating the' en- ' tire game. This initiative, announced by Prime Minister , Brian Mulroney, is the largest of its kind ever undertaken by any Canadian, government on behalf of- farmers. It is a national program that responds to a national need. It will help offset low grain and oilseed prices•resulting from the subsidy war between the European Community and the United States. The first $300 million will be in the hands of grain and oilseed farmers this winter. Another $700 million will be paid out in the spring. Coach Lynn Meyers credited his Vikings with an all-out effort in the game, but the • bigger, stronger Rams out -muscled the Vikings. " Brad Fisher led the Vikings with 14 points. Shawn Talbot added 10: Scott Allen, Brian Lane and Adam Ripley had six points apiece and Pat Donnelly had four. Rill Wolfe led the Rams with 22 points.
