REV. CLARE GEDDES,
BLUEWATER CENTRE.
On Valentine's Day the faney of ycuulg and
old alike turns to love. Love is, indeed, a
many-splendoured thing. The human emo-
tions of love range all the way from lust to
caring -concern. That is why our English
word -love': is so hard to define. In order to
examine the different splendours or shades
of love, let us turn to the New Testament and
the Greek in which it was originally written,
1 Peter 3:8 speaks of "loving as
brethren". The word for love used here if
•'filia". Its meaning is basically "friend-
ship", "companionship". We make many
acquaintances during our lifetime: in our
neighbourhood, in school, at our place of
work. We make few friends. We don't have
many people to whom we can turn in time of
personal crisis and be absolutely sure thay
will fully accept and comfort us. A friend is
one who trusts us completely — Wen with
life itself — and whom we trust in the same
way. A friend is one who accepts us com-
pletely as we are, rather than as he/she
wishes we would become. True friendship is
a marvelous form of human love that may
be shared by .persons of the same sex or by
persons of the opposite sex. A class'ic'exam-
ple of "filial". love is described in I Samuel
MINISTER'S STUDY
18, where Jonathan defied his father (King
Saul) to protect the life of his friend, David.
"Eros" refers to sexual love. This may
cover a wide range of human relationships. .
When one person simply uses another to
satisfy his sexual drive the experience is one
of lust rather than of love. Lust and por-
nography treat people as things or objects,
rather than as persons of dignity and, worth.
The "eros" referred to in the Song of Songs
8:6-7 describes the loving relationship bet-
ween two people who hold each other in the
• highest degree of trust and affection, dignity
and worth.
"Eros" has another quite different mean-
ing, best described as "aspiration". As a
child of God each of us should strive to
develop our potential as human beings.
Those who love us will also aspire on our
behalf and help us to develop our individual
potential to the fullest extent. This may in-
volve considerable self-sacrifice. For exam-
ple, suppose on your 40th birthday you
decide it is high time you developed your
potential as a piano player. With the support

your family you buy a piano and being to
take piano lessons. No matter how talented
you may be, there are tunes during the Long
hours of practice required to roaster the
piano that family members-sac••ifice a good
deal of peace and quiet. They do so willing-
ly, however, because they "aspire" on your
behalf. Each of us aspires for him/himself;
we also aspire for those whom we love.
"Agape" is the other splendour or shade
of love we find in the Bible. "Agape" is the
peculiar love God has for us ..and which
Jesus commands us to have for each other.
"Agape" is difficult to define succinctly.
The best definition I have found is "un-
breakable goodwill". In John 13;34, Jesus
commands us "to love one another as I have
loved you.:." Such love is not merely a mat-
ter of the emotions. It is much more an act
of will, i.e. actively willing good towards
another. It requires a steady, disciplined
will to seek the good of others. This becomes
clear when we consider Jesus' command to
"love your enemies" (Matthew 5:44). How
can we love people we don't even like? We
don't have to "like" them.; we have only to
will good towards them. Even this may
seem to be impossible, unless we learn to
sepa1'ate a person from the evil he/she does.
We tlhay rightly reject the evil, but we may
not reject the person. That is how God loves
us and how He wants us to love one another.
When we combine these various splen-
dours of love we have a fairly broad and
lasting basis for building and developing a
loving relationship.
