No uict, fix' lir le
For a parent, little can be as dishearten-
ing as to learn than that your child isn't lear-
ning, or behaving, like other children. You
are not alone. Over two million Canadians
suffer from learning disabilities - one in
every ten children.
In order to successfully parent the learn,.
ing disabled child one must be informed,
knowledgeable and involved. There is no
"quick fix". Parents who wish to ensure
their child reaches his or her potential must
be committed to a long-term educational
partnership with their child. It is not easy,
but, in the process, parents can learn how to
be informed advocates for their children.
Unfortunately, too many assume too
quickly that the learning disabled child has
limited potential and so there is a tendancy
to make true the adage 'we are what we are
expected to become'. Learning ' disabled -
people can have special talents which can
enable them to achieve great .success, both
in conventional and in non -conventional
careers. They must not be dismissed.
Leonardo da Vince's manuscripts are filled
with word and letter reversals yet .no ane
would dispute his genius. Likewise it is said
that Albert Einstein couldn't remember his
own telephone number, Winston Churchill
was written -off as a youth, and Hans Chris-
tian Andersen .was unable to write. History.
is full of stories of great achievers who, were.

Some educators argue that it is,.often in
the school that highly -charged negative at-
titudes towards school and towards learning
evolve. In the school, grading immediately
sets up a hierarchy of. abilities waiting only
for the teacher to decide what bodies will oc-
cupy what positions. This traditional ap-
proach severely limits success for learning
disabled 'students. In the home, careless
remarks and ''Wimp Mnnorn r„'Ar markt
poor marks are a sympton of a problem,
notthe problem) can undermine a child's
sense of self-worth and lead to the undoing
of a positive attitude.
Learning to cope with a learning disability
by concentration on learning strengths and
fostering self-esteem is not a skpll which can
be learned without support and encourage-
ment - not only for the child, but also for the
parents! But, all too often people with learn-
ing disabilities. or parents of children with
ilities
learning problems don't know what to do.
where to go, or whom to trust. AU too often
they suffer through, without getting help for
their children or for themselves. •
For over twenty years The Association for
Children with Learning Disabilities have
been advocating and lobbying for children
and offering support, encouragement and
resources for parents. Concerned parents
can access the resources of the Association
through .the Bruce County Chapter of the
Association. The President is' Mr. Torn
Gregg, Box 597, Kincardine. Phone No.
396-3638, or for further information you can
contact me.
There are over fifty Chapters of the
Association for, Children with Learning
Disabilities across the Province working to
better learning environments for children at
the elementary, secondary and post secon-
dary levels of education. They ensure that
research on 'workable teaching strategies
filter down through the Ministry of Educa,
tion into our,schools. Scientific investigation
into a thoughtful approach to teaching
children with learning • disabilities- and'
creating .enabling environments in the
classroom does . not happen • by - default.
These initiatives are anly possible because
caring educators and parents demand atten-
tion. If you are a parent of a . learning -
disabled child, you can be.part of finding the
solutions.
