messy room Colleen advises
DEAR COLLEEN:
Why can't I make a mess in my room and
keep it that' way?,
.no name
DEAR ?:. •
If I make a mess in my room I regret it,
because in the middle of the night when I
sleepwalk I always trip and fall over my
toys and hurt myself. Also,, you'll never
remember where things are. You shouldn't
keep it that way, because it's boring to look
at the same messy room everyday,
DEAR COLLEEN
How can I get up in the morning without

Ministry wants to reduce
the, number of injuries
An allocation of $1.4 million, announced
today by the Honourable John Eakins, On-
tario Minister of Tourism and. Recreation,
will be used toward a program designed to
reduce injuries in sports and fitness.
A number of initiatives Will be carried
--gout-tfvj':tlie next 15 months and will be
supported with amendments to the
Ministry of Tourism and Recreation Act. •
The amendments will- empower the
Minister of Tourism and Recreation to act
in the public interest on safety matters in
sports and fitness, and permit theMinister
to intervene, if necessary, to prohibit the
use of an unsafe sport or fitness facility, or
to order an amateur sport or fitness
association to cease unsafe activities.
The amendments and the program in-
itiatives are in response to public concern
about the increasing number of injuries
resulting from participation in amateur
sports and fitness programs. A number of
safety priorities were identified by the
-Ministry and the Sports Medicine and
Sport Safety Advisory Board. • •
Part of the new program will specifical-
ly address the safety issue in amateur
hockey. The Ministry will •work with .the
Hockey Development Centre for Ontario to
create a single governing body for the
sport aimed at providing uniformity in
policy, coaching and instructional pro-
grams at a .provincial level.
Other steps involving amateur hockey
include improvements in the recruitment,
training and supervision of hockey
referees, and, providing arenas with
breakaway hockey nets. on 'a cost -shared
basis.
Efforts will also be directed toward
revitalizing a •hockey training program
emphasizing the prevention of injury and
ensuring proper care through skilled team
trainers and therapists.
A standard education and training pro-
gram will be -developed for ,trainers,
coaches and ' therapists in all amateur
sports, supported by specific cost -shared
grants for training clinics.
The Ministry has also moved to make
improvements in the fitness. industry,
which will include establishing safety stan-
dards for operations, maintenance and
equipment, and•standards for the training
and job qualifications of professional
fitness employees. As well, the Ministry
will be soliciting corporate sponsors to
participate in a• new fitness across the
province.
The Ministry's overall sports and fitness
safety program will also be .expanded in
1987-88 to develop a research data base on
injury and its prevention in sports and
fitness. Sports identified as having a
history of preventable injuries will have'
grants programs made available to ensure
future safety' for participants.
"Participation in amateur sports and.
'fitness by Ontarians is increasing rapid-
• ly." said Eakins, "My aim is to make sure
that the enthusiasm continues with safety
andinjury prevention a top priority."

Drugs: a community problem
from page 1A
You've made the initial step by coming
here now the second step is to take one step
furher regarding drug enforcment," Benn
said.
Plamondon noted that education and
prevention can be most effectively im-
plemented in the community by communi-
ty groups working together.
'You can do a lot together but not a lot
individually," -he said: - • •
He said discussions should be held bet-
ween community groups'and local experts
before deciding, how to proceed, with a drug
awareness and prevention program.
He suggested organizing parent -peer
groups in, which parents would find out
behaviour prtterns among children. He
explained to the parents in the 'audience
that signs of children being on drugs in-
cluded changes in their friends, personal
habits, school marks and their personality.
Plamondon noted that a drug awareness
program was being offered in the elemen-
tary school system in the counties of Mid-
dlesex and Oxford.
"Each step you take the problems will
change. Each year the dru-g problem
changes and you have to acknowledge that
fact," " he said. T
It is through seminars, such as the one
held last week, that these men hope to
make citizens aware of the drug problem
in their community and 'hopefully en-
courage them to fight back against the
problem.
