Also approved for purchase was a physi• - cian's examining table at a cost of $1,540 to be placed in the Emergency Operating . Room. Total cost of the items was $8,280. Connelly noted that the property com- mittee reviewed a request from . the - Physiotheeapy Department for the pur- chase of a Hydrofitness Machine of which • there was a budget of $6,000. The commit- tee approved the purchase of •the Hydrofitness Machine. at a cost of $5,690 plus the accessory of adapted lever arms at a cost of $390. Following the Zehrs fund raising project for a surgical microscope which raised about $9,000, the property committee ap• - ospital board approves placement A request from Mohawk College in Hamilton regarding, internship programs for senior -level occupational . therapy students was approved by -the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital board of governors meeting held" Monday night. Representatives of the college's occupa- tional therapy program contacted Joy Daymond, co-ordinator of the Goderich Community Psychiatric Service, regar- ding the possibility of establishing a place- ment program' at the service. - Hospital administrator Ken Engelstad presented the request at the board of governors meeting. He explained that Mohawk College -would like to send one senior occupational therapy student, for an`. internship placement of six weeks to the Goderich Community Psychiatric Service: He noted that the placement would be. at "no cost to the hospital sincewe would just provide the hospital opportunity.".- The college would be responsible for all costs including liability; insurance coverage. Engelstad rioted that the pro- posed placement was along the same lines of that of the nursing students who are placed at the hospital. •. Dr. Don Neal., chief of staff at Alexandra Marine and General Hospital, said the board should approve the motion to accept a placement student from Mohawk College because "it is high quality,, help that's free." After approving,, the motion,. Engelstad said before any students arrive he would demand the qualifications of the students in writing. . The first six-week student placement will begin March 9, 1987.' 'Hospital takes part in study Alexandra Marine anu General Hospital will be taking part.in a study being done on Emergency Department Services in On- tario Hospital Association (OHA) Region 2. The hospital's board of governors had approv- ed a budget of $15,000 for the purchase of the microscope. • Hospital board members learned .from Connelly that the committee approved the purchase of a dual cuff Automatice Tourni- quet for the Operating Room. A budget of $5,500 had been established for the item and approval was given for the purchase of a Zimmer ATS 1000 Automatic Tourniquet at a cost of $5,193.05. Also approved at the January meeting was the purchase of a Blakslee food mixer and accessories at a cost of $551.12. for the Dietary Department. Board members learned from Connelly that the replacement of a portable X-ray unit was inevitable. He noted that pro- blems .had been experienced with the por- table x-ray units and that one of the wits was beyond repair. He said the hospital required tw machines to do hip pinnings and that, a present, any surgery of this nature must be sent to London. An inspection of one machine determined that it can no longer be 'calibrated, adjusted or modified to make it functional or to consistently meet the regulations under the Healing Arts Radiation Protection Act. It was recom- mended that the unit be replaced. Connel- ly said the second machine was recondi- tioned, adding it could act as a back-up on- ly if a new machine'was purchased. The committee felt that a General Elec- tric AMX=3 Auto Mobile X-ray Unit should be,purchased at a cost of $35,700 pending the board of governors' approval. The board approved the purchase of the machine. In other property committee business, Connelly noted that verbal approval had been given by the Ministry of Health for the architect's drawings of the renovations to the second -floor but that approval had not yet been received for the outside repairs, although, it is expected shortly. Regarding renovation projects, Connelly noted that an Implementation Committee had been formed in December to review the expression of concern for the disrup- tion that will be caused in the hospital and the need for co-ordination of the work to be done with the need to treat patients. Con- nelly said it was suggested that opera- tional constraints be placed in the specifications so the contractor will be aware as to limitations that may be placed on him during construction. In concluding his report, Connelly told the board that the activities of the Proper- ty Committee were increasing and sug- gested that the membership on the com- mittee should be increased. There are cur- rently five members on the committee and Connelly noted that "with a lot of items to be attended to by the committee" another member was required to keep the commit- tee on top of things' and`•"be efficient." It was decided that the chairman and vice- chairman of the board of governors will be appointing a person to the committee.
