(photos by Pat Raftisi Goderich B teams host Port Huron in -exhibition series There has been plenty of international 'hockey taking place in recent weeks in venues around the world, and Goderich of- • Erred its own version with a weekend series •against Port Huron, Michigan tea ins. The Goderich Peewee and Bantam B teams were less than congenial hosts, however, as both teams won the two -game series against Pott Huron. . • 'Tie Peewees won by scores of 6-3 and 5-3 .while the Bantam Bs were 6=3 and' 8.4 ‘sinners. 1 in the first game- of the series, the Peewee 13s built up a 3-0 first -period lead and went on to win 6-3. Sam Hosack sparked the offence in the • first game scoring three goals. He scored MINOR HOCKEY the first goal of the gam and completeed his hat -trick with•a goal inceach of the final two periods. Team- to Mike LeBrun scored one goal and ssiste owo others while Shawn Car and Trevor zinet, who was eagle p from the Atom B team, scored single goals for Goderich. Chris Burbine and Brent Anderson chipped in with two assists, apiece. In the game Sunday, Brent Anderson went on a scoring spree with three straight goals in the second period to break a 1-1 tie and push Goderich ahead 4-1. Port Huron scored twice in the final period to make the game close but a third - period goal by Mike LeBrun clinched the wrn. Hosack scored the first Goderich goal and assisted on another. Clint Mosher scored two goals for Port Huron. , In HUron-Perth Tier II play Friday., Zurich scored one goal in the second period' and added two in the third to defeat. Goderich 3-1. The teams played through a scoreless first period and Zurich scored the only goal of the second to Bold a 1-0 lead heading into the final period. Two quick goals in the third period put Zurich up by three before Shawn Carver scored the lone Goderich goal. Mark Melick assisted on the play. a Ss u'4� �4'rs tOULi:h in 8-4.1oss Anyone walking, into the Goderich Sailors dressing room following their OHA Junior 'C' hockey game here Friday night would probably havethought the Sailors had just defeated the Hanover Barons. The . players were excited, the coaches were happy and the executive members were smiling. .No, the Sailors did not defeat the Barons. In fact, they lost 8-4 to the powerful Hanover, team, but the good' effort the Sailors ut up made the result almost as satisfying a win for the last -place Sailors. In the three previous meetings of the two . teams this season, the Barons have ad- ministered 14-4, 21-0 and 17-4 beatings on. the Sailors, but Friday the Sailors were in the garne all the way., The Sailors led 1-0 and 2-1 in the first period and the score was tied 3-3 after the first twenty minutes. The Barons got two unanswered goals in the se- cond period to take a 5-3 lead into the final period. They scored ° again .early in the period, but the Sailors came back to make it 6-4 before two .more ,late goals by Hanover ended the scoring. Jim Beattie had a super game for the Sailors, scoring the .hat -trick. Scott Stokes opened the scoring for the Sailors, moving in from his defence sport at the blueline to finish off a power play effort with line: mates -Kevin Telford and Chris Sideris. Beattie's goals came on Rick Vaive-like. drives from the top of the circle. Darren. Doak assisted on two of Beattie's goals. Tim Riehl and Daryl Madge also had assists. - Dave Hopkins and Mike Zuzek had three goals apiece for the Barons while Jamie - Dunham and Scott Ruhl had singles. The game provided the best hockey of the season for the Sailor's fans who have - been turning out in„good numbers with the improved play of the team in recent weeks. The Sailors are hoping to get into the win column this Friday when they host the Wingham Ironmen at 8:30 p.m. These two teams tied 4-4 in their last meeting and an .intense rivalry has developed between the two teams this season. Midgets begin playoff series a1Ip1ayers Ian curling fun day Feb® 7 SPORTS SHORTS The Goderich Legion Midgets dropped their final season game to Strathroy, last Tuesday night by a score of 9-4. The Midgets finished the regular season with ten wins, •four losses and two ties. They dropped two games each to St. Marys and Strathroy. Strathroy came out flying and took a quick three -goal lead. Strathroy also benefitted when Tom Bean was ejected for highsticking on a questionable call. This seemed to have taken. the fight out of the Goderich team. Wayne Nivins, opened the scoring from Goderich when he dove along the ice to tip•in the puck. Mark Cauchi, and Neil Rodger drew assists. Strathroy scored again to lead 4-1 after the first 'period. , Mike Radford scored assisted 'from Bowman to open the second period. Again, Strathroy scored but Nivins scored his se- cond of the night from Darrell :Durnin to make it 5-3. Unfortunately, Goderich could come no closer as Strathroy scored four more times. Gary Erb finished the scor- ing, his tenth of the season, as Nivins set .him up to get his third point of the night. The Goderich :Midgets will begin their playoffs tonight against „Wallaceburg. Game time is 8:.00. It is well known that a Midget game is better than a Toronto Maple Leaf game so come out and Support the Goderich team. The following is a schedule of their games. Lions win Le ion tournament Peewees defeat Clinton, Exeter and Wingham in tourney The Goderich Lions PeeWee's finally this year have seen the•results of their good hard work they had been giving as they captured the Zone C-1 championship last week in Ripley. The Lions won the title defeating Clinton 4-2 in the first game Exeter 2-1 in 'the second and in overtime, they defeated Wingham 5-2. ' in the Clinton 'game, Goderich took a 2-0 lead In the first period as Jason Jeffrey scored from).Jeff Beange and Andrew McLarty in the first minute of play, and Paul 'Hamilton scored on an unassisted effort three minutes later. Penalties got the Lions in trouble during the second period as Clinton tallied twice to tie the score. In the third period, Aaron Duckworth, scored what turned out to be the winner mid- way through the period from Jeremy Grasby and Chuck McLennan. Then with 7:42 remaining (,ion goalie Chuck .McLennon, who was ,strong throughout the contest,' made a key save, and his teammates, went right down the ice arid scored with Jeff 13eange scoring frorn,Jamte Stanley and Andrew McLarty. In the Exeter game, the Lions checked the opposi`tion`s big centremen continuously and this, combined with Bob Lurnby'S goaltending, gave the Lions the Win. Aaron Duckworth opened the scoring with .44 seconds left in the first peridd with .Jason Cook assistirlg. Goderich ripped its lead to 2-0 as Jeff Beartge tallied from Andrew Mclarty' With ,54.1 seconds 1vff in the second period With four members left in the game, Exeter finally broke i',runby's shut nut bid and made things hot for the Lions, but once again h- n good checking paid Against Wingham, the championship.game, the Lions twice came from behind to do the score and then omit rfnnrng away in the overtime. Once again, Bob Lumby in net had a good outing a d his defence of Mark Phillips, Sean O'Brien, Jason Volland, •Jeremy Grasby and Jamie Stanley came up big as they were tested often in the first period and a half. With the score 1-0 for Wingham after one, Jeff Beange's screen shot tied the game as Andrew Mci,arty and Jason Jeffrey assisted. JeremyGrasby's hard blast from the point late in the second period tied the game at two,as iindrew McLartyt assisted on the giyal. a The'game stayed a tie until overtime when Paul Hamilton scored on a breakaway from Aaron Duckworth and then the roes reversed on the fourth goal as Duckworth tallied Mini HaMilton and Jeff Beange,• Andrew McLarty's open .net goal -made it•5 2 with T3eange and Jason Volland assisting. The hard luck line of the day Wei Kell MacDonald, Sean Bloch and Paul Wheeler as they worked hard but couldn't get the red light on. The Lions will now start their OMHA playoffs, as' they start in Belle River oti Satur- day and are back home Sunday against Wallaceburg at 3.30. Is it possible to teach a slowpitch player the finer aspects of the sport of curling. Well, probably not. Regardless, the Goderich Men's Slowpitch League will be hosting a curling. fun day at the Maitland Curling Club, Saturday, Feb. 7. All slowpitch teams are invited ta enter a four -man team, in the 16 -team competi- tion featuring two draws. The,$44 per team entry fee includes lunch and prizes. Atom Bs in two uro ert games ,The Goderich Atom B Blue team enjoyed a successful week in Huron -Perth League play winning two games. • Goderich ripped 13-2 in a league game in Bayfield and got by Zurich 7-4 in its second game. Jason Meriam led the.,offensive assault in the Bayfield game scoring four goals while team-mates Jeff Klages and Trevor Bazinet scored three goals each. Scott Mathieson, Ryan Million and James McDade scored one goal apiece for Goderich. In the Zurich game, Goderich built up a 2-1 lead after one period, increased- the margin to 4-2 after two periods and coasted to the win with three goals in the final period. Meriam again sparked the offence with a three -goal .performance' while Mathieson, McDade, Klages and Bazinet scored one goal each. Brad Rodges played 'both games in goal for Goderich. vices earn 1®1 tie i fl al league game The Goderich Garb and Gear Novices have played two -Shamrodk League games in the New Year, losing one to St. Marys and tying' the other with Strathroy. .In a game played in St. Marys Jan. 3, St. Marys scored three times in the third period to defeat Goderich 5-1. St. Marys built up a 2-0 lead 'midway through, the second period but Goderich got back in the game with a goal by Craig Corriveau just 20 seconds•after St. Marys second goal. The home team put the game away.with three goals in the final period to produce the 5-1 final score. In a league game Saturday, Goderich got a goal from Trevor Macaulay midway through the second period 'as the Garb and Gear. Novices tied Strathroy 1-1., Jeff Volland and Shane Webster assisted on the goal. Strathroy led 1-0 on a first period goal by Sam Hill. The game . was the final Shamrock League contest for the novices. Tweens win' two games in ringette play The Goderich, Tweens enjoyed a suc- cessful week in ringette' play winning two games. The Tweens hammered Huron Park 8-1 in a game played at Huron Park Friday, and ,here Sunday the Tweens edged Seaforth 4-3. Jennifer Hamilton led the offence Fri- day with a five -point effort on three goals and two assists. Team-mate Angie Har- rison scored two goals and assisted on two others. Trisha Rumig, Stacey Clarence and Leslie Brereton scored, one goal each for' Goderich. Harrison was the offensive star Sunday, as she scored three straight goals to boost Goderich to a 4-3 victory over Seaforth. Goderich built, up a 3-0 lead in the first period and' -then scored once in the final period to clinch the win. Brereton'scored the other Goderich goal and Hamilton chipped in with two assists. Rumig and Clarence added one assist apiece. Bridge scai°es Eleanor Erskine and John Donatis had a point total of 39.5 to top a four -table Howell game at the 3an. 5 meeting of the Goderich Duplicate Bridge Club. Ralph Kingswell and Bill Duncan were second with 37 points while Martina Schneiker and Mary Donnelly Were third with 35 and Marg Hall and John Wood, fourth with 34 points. Erskine combined with Mary Donnelly for 134.5 points to win the North-South divi- sion at a nine -table Mitchell game pl'ues- day, Jan. B. The average score was 108. Barb Howe and Marron Lane were se- cond with 122 points and the teams of Mary Lapaine and Auleen Curry and Betty and Ray Fisher tied with 115 points. Verna Worthy and Marg Hall were' first in the East -Wet section with 130.5 points While Cathy M'Donald and Pat Stringer settled for second spot` with 124 points, Aelian Weerasooriya and '.K. Venkiteswaran were third with 121.5 p ihts 'and Donna Sproule ar)d Evelyn Galbaaith were fourth with 117.5 'points. •''
