Investment in
Arts inspires
fun-rai-si g,*, .
A $10 million program to help arts groups
reduce their deficits has stimulated a round
of imaginative fund-raising across the
province.
The arts community has responded to-
the challenge posed by the Investment in the
Arts program with enterprising and inven-
tive plans," Lily Munro, minister of citizen-
ship and culture, said recently.
For example, the Quinte Dance Centre in
Belleville is asking local and national
businesses to sponsor its professional -level
ballet students for $2,500 a year. In return,
students help out at company events. The,
centre already had $6,250 of the $20;000 it
hopes to -raise in the program, -she said.
Since June, when tile program was an- '
nounced, the ministry has approved 118 ap- .-
plications committing $5,140,000 in mat-
ching funds. It is reviewing proposals from
another 16 companies for a further ,.
42,630,000. The ministry hopes to have the ,
program completely subscribed by January
1987.
The program runs- over- three of-thearts
companies' fiscal years. It matches one-to-
one every fundraising dollar received above
the average level raised in the community.
Money given by new corporate sponsors is
matched two -to -one.
Investment in the Arts requires arts;
groups to invest money raised for the pro-
gram,in endowment funds, from which they
draw -interest. _Ministry money is availbale ,
to reduce their accumulated deficits or to
supplement endowment funds.
Most arts companies are organizing their
fund-raising events now. `
Ontario -based , arts organizations are
eligible for the program if they are more
than three -years -old, have operating
budgets or $75,000 or more, and receive sup-
port from the Ontario Arts Council. Arts
groups on Northern Ontario with operating
budgets of' more than $50,000 are also
eligible. ' .
Locally, these include the Blyth Centre for
the Arts and the Huron Country Playhouse
Inc. in Grand Bend._
