*A Tragedy Recalled

The murder Of Thomas D'Arcy Mc-
Gee, the Irien-Canadian statesman,
on April 8tb, 1868, is recalled by the
announeernent of the death in Mon-
treal of Mrs. Brideet Whelan, the
widow of Patrick Whelan, who WAS
convicted or the assassination and
hanged. Mrs. Whelan. 'who was 79
years old, earns from Ireland when
eirl and was employed in the St.
La -Wrote° Hall, when she made the
acquaintance of Whelan, who was
a journeyman tailor. She had ac-
cumulated quite a lot of 'money, and
after keeping company for some
time, the couple were married
by ehe late Father Dowd, of St.Pat-
rick's churcb, in 1867. Mrs. Whe-
lan condutted boarding. house .for
some time, while Whelan worked at
his trades After McGee's murder be
was arrested, and after an historic
trial was found !guilty, mad sentenc-
ed to death. He later expiated his
crime on the scaffold. Wheai Whe-
lan was arrested, Mrs. Whelan, who
was only 33 years old. at the time
went io Ottawa and remained by
her husband until the end, when she
returned to Montreal, where she has
lived very quietly, enjoying the re-
spect of a large circle of friends and
neiglibore, and 'being noted for her
