MOTORMAN MUST EXPLAIN.
Motorman Armstrong is the only
matt who can give the cause of the
accident. From what could be
learned the gates were dowiain am-
ple time for him to bring his har`to
a stop. Several eyewitnesses to
the accident testify to this. Arm-
strong himself was seen. by a num-
ber of people after the occurrence,
but he talked incoherently, and noth-
ing could be made of what he said.
Later he was taken to the hospital,
but the doctors there refused to. al-
low anyone to see him. The only
possible explanation as to why the
car did not come to a stop is that
the brakes did not. work properly.
Phe Toronto Railway officials stated
that in Armstrong's state of mind
they did not wish to interrogate
him. It seems clear, from what
could be learned that the man when
he saw that a collision was inevita-
ble jumped from the car. If he had
not jumped .it would be reasoienble
to suppose that his body would have
been found 300 feet further along the
tra.cla where the veetibule and motor
were picked up.

plunged into the icy water of the

THE TIDY ANT.
A naturalist has been neekieg ob-
servations on the toilets of certain
ants, aacl has discovered each insect
goes through most elaborate ablu-
tions. They are not only performed
by herself, but by another, who
acts for the time as lady's maid.
The aeeistant starts by washing the
face of her companion, and then
goes over the whole body. 'The at-
titude of the ant that is being wash-
ed is oee of intense satisfaction.
She lies diiwn with all her limbs
stretched loosely out; she rolls over
on her side, even her back, a per-
fect picture of ease. The pleasure
the little insect evinces in being
thus combed and sponged is really
enjoyable to the observer,
