A meeting of the rate lay ers was hold in the Town Ball, August 3rd, o discuss the advisability of loan- ing A. 11. There were about forty ty 1t c4en" including Zhe reeve anseveral r•t aver[ c inl s ou ail cr.. Mr. Gauld in presenting his side of the case Mated that the plant he wished to locate here, is one which the rose ii at present i ,I, xm.. is n Cleveland. d 3. R I .tn . He claimed that it was purchased 'ten years ago a t a cost of $13,000, and was operated only two years,. when the trust secured a lease or it, and closed it up for eight years. Mr. Gould told the committee that he could secure; the plant for $8,000, and if brought to Exeter, he would want the village to loan him $5,000 for .five years without in- terest, the amount to be used for the purchase of a boiler and engine and for expenses incurred in work- ing up n. trade and operating ex- penses. Be ii to give the village a mortgage 011 ilhe plant and is to pay $1,200 of the amount borrowed, in two years or allow the mortgage to 'be foreclosed. Mr. Gauld claims 'there' are only five or six tack factories in Can- ada; and that he has a market for the greater portion of las output. Speeches were made by several of those present, and it was the con census of opinion that the amount should be Loaned, providing, of course, that the plant is in a good condition, en& worth the amount claimed. After a lengthy discussion it was decided that the council hold a meeting` and appoint a committee to investigate 't:he matter fully, the committee to reporito the council, axed it the report be favorable, the council to pass 0 by-law authorizing loan to be voted u ion 1 by the rate- payers. The council met friday night and appointed a committee consisting of Reeve W, G. Bissett, 1', W. Madman. Hugh Spackman, -'1'., 13.
