OF INTEREST IN THE HOIISEIIOLD.- The March Delineator contains much matter of interest and value in its household departments, One of the most'excellent features is an article by Eleanor M:uchant on Serving the Informal Sunday Night Supper and Impromptu Evening Refreshments efiectively illustrated. Refreshments for Receptions, illustrated, as well as the unique luncheon dishes a la Plan- chette, wilt appeal to all who enjoy dainty confections. Lent-ohserying housewives will find many suggestions to lessen their table difficulties at this season, including Novel Oyster. Reci- pee by Frances E. Peck, Special Lent- en Dishes by Alice Chittenden and Dainty Souffles by Margaret Hill. In addition there are numerous other seasonable recipes. and useful inforina- tion for many horse needs. VALUE OF ADVERTISING.—The Can- adian Grocer of a recent . date had a pointed article on the subject of ad- vertising, -vertising, and says 'truthfully : If a grocery dealer, for, example, who buys space, neglects to use it intelli- gently, 'brightly, persuasively, be can- not expect his advertising to be profit- able and, if be . honest he will lt blamei h maelf for the failure., Hewing an opportunity is.ope"thing ;<the right use' of any opportunity is,quite anoth- er firing. We have all known men to own horses, .which .stand idle in their stalls most of the time, or else wander abont'a big pasture field- They do no work; yet we do not say the horses are no good. +Ibis their owners whom we censure .: S6• •rt is with much advertising. Some advertisements stand' unchanged week afterweek using up space - which must be paid for ; and some ramble so that they fail to sell a, penny's worth. Such advertising is costly because it repre- sents waste. The dealer who adver- tises, or rather, who , thinks h P, is a - ,d yertising, by engaging spare in his slocal paper and then givingreither time nor attention: to a right use of this space might just as well cancel' the contract." Merchants in the smaller towns will do -1 to follow the lead of the large cities• and mak- ing the people aware that goods can be bought as cheaply'' as in the larger cities. It is said the mail order de- nartments in the large stores are suf- fering considerable shrinkage because of the better use the merch- ants country ' t m - ants are making of their advertising space in their local papers, To do business these days it, is necessary to advertise. Those wishing to join may become members and have the use of the+ library for lac. a year,—Miss M. WierrE, Pres. ; Mn,s A, ilesrmfes. Sec. Treas. Mrs George 1Ruston, hbfrid, reports a winter similar to the present one sixty-one years ago. IFtnter set in, on the 15th of November, 1812, lastin until the 6th. of April following, with a slight January thaw. This is known as the bard winter, There were three feet of snow on the level. March being the stormiest mouth of the winter...In those days farmers depended, very ,much on "browse" for their stock and owing to the severe weather a great many of the cattle died. Spring set in warn), with a, beautiful simmer fol- lowing. WEATHER FORECASTS. -- Rev. Irl Hick's seco rad storm m period will ex- press itself about the 5t1i, 6th. 7th. and 8th. This.. as well as all the per- iods in this month. is dominated by the March, or spring equinox. The Moon at last quarter and near extreme south delineation, will also be factors in disturbances at this time. The weather will be unsettled and bleak at the openingofthis period. The barometer will begin falling .and the temperature rising :in western parts by the 5th. and during the Oth to the 8th inclusive, more native disturban- ePs, with rain, wind and snow will take up their march eastward. Just such weather as calls for the most thoughtful and 'kindly consideration for one's self, and if not for _ himself, at least for his helpless and dependent beasts. W. C. T. U.
