The Chicago horror has awakened a
determination upon all sides that pub-
lic meeting planes sball be made rex-
enable- safe from a repetition of the
Ir.:news theatre tragedy. The deter-
mination does not apply to theatres
male, ger should it. Thera should be
a vigorous inspection of every place
throughout the country wnere people
are wont to gather in numbers and if
bylaws are necessary they should be
passed.
Farmere and roadoieri generally are
respectfully solicited to assist in keep-
ing the roads in the best possible con-
dition during the winter season, by
taking when ever practicable, on all
the main roads, the right half of the
centre track immediately after it is
opened. Thus preserving througbout
the season a uniformly solid road bed
of practically three tracks width and
making possible greater security and
more rapid travel. It is also urged that
where such roads are held to be too
badly drifted that bees be orgaoized
to place them in such a tondition as
will admit of this suggestion being
thoroughly. tested during the present
season with a view to its general ad-
option with the succeeding winter. --

Mr. William Delbridge, of VSTinchel-
sea, who spent a couple of weeks in
Chicago, returned home on Tuesday
mornhig of this week, after a pleasant
'visit -with friends in the windy city:
Mr. Delbridge says that his visit
might have been a very, and one te his
family, as he and Mrs. Delbridge were
making all preparations to attend the
play. at the Irocinois Theatre on that
fateful afternoon. Just when about to
start a snow storm came up .which
seemed to betoken a blizzard and they
with a niece decided to ren3ain at
home. Rad they gone, theirs would
probably. have been the direful fate of
many others. Being in the city Mr.
Delbridge thought he would like to
take a view of the wreck and see for
himself. No tongue can tell or pen
picture the woeful distress of those
who were almost hopelessly looking
for loved ones in that awful catastro-
phe and the sight of the huge mass of
dead hutnanity will long linger in his
memory as most appalling.

SIZE op APPLE Beetants. - The
fruit division, Ottawa, has received
numerous complaints this year from
English buyers to the effect that, for
the first time there is grave irreenbt-
fey in tbe size of the apple barrels
sent forward from Ontario. No doubt,
the shortage in barrels is responsible
for some of this irregularity; never-
theless a, number of apple shippers
have expressed the intention of using
only the standard size (06 guests to
the barrel.) As this is practically the
first year when any but the large
barrelLhad been used in Ontariotapple
shippers should immediately arrive at
sume agreement among themselves as
to the size to be used in future. It
will be the cause of considerable loss
to tbe trade if some continue to use
the larger size and others use the
minimum size. The law prescribestbe
minimum size, which is a barrel 261
inches between heads, inside measurs,
and with a head diameter ce17 inches,
and a middle diameter of' I8 inches
-representing as nearly as possible 90
