BAYFIELD - The century old town hall
here may be doomed for the demolition
crew.
That was the sentence given to the
building on October 5 when village council
here approved final recommendations on
the study that was carried out to determine
the future of the old town hall.
Condemned by the Fire Marshall's Act in
the early 1980s, the fate of the old town hall
on Clan Gregor Square has been an issue of
controversy over the past several years. In
an effort to determine the future of the hall,
council recently undertook an in-depth
public survey.
The study indicated that village residents
were not in favor of spending public money
to renovate the structure. Many called for
its demolition.
Councillor Pat Muratori. was part of the
study team. In a report to council she
presented three recommendations.
"After reviewing the results of the survey
and preliminary discussions with the ap-
propriate ministries, it is apparent there is
insufficient community support to warrant
the expenditure of public funds for th
preservation of the town hall. It is further
recommended that due to the fact that the
council of the municipality is m possession
of a report condemning the building, any oc-
cupancy whatsoever should be immediately
terminated and the building secured against
entry. To allow this building to stand in its
present condition with no attempts made to
renovate is unwise and possessess a possible
danger to public safety. It is therefore
recommened that should the council of the
Village of Bayfield not receive an accep-
table private sector proposal for the renova-
tions and use of this building, it well be
demolished..."
Council has set a closing date of April 30,
1988 to hear proposals.

BRUCEFIELD - Residents from this com-
munity learned during an October 19
meeting that they are in jeopardy of losing
their post office.
Viola Higgs, secretary for Rural Dignity,
met with over 50 concerned citizens to
discuss the current postal situation in the
area. Before discussing changes which
might take place, she briefly explained
Rural Dignity is a group of people from all
walks of life who were set up to help rural
people. Their number one concern right now
is in saving the rural post offices.
She noted that the problems for the small
post offices will arise when a post office is
sold, such as it was in Brucefield, or when a
post master retires. It is at this time that
some conversion takes. place.
When someone is hired to take over the
post office, they will be taken on as term
employees, Mrs. Higgs noted. However, the
new employees will not be offered actual
post office jobs. They will become agents of
th corporation, or contractors who are sup-
plied' materials and sell them on
commission.
Running the post office on this basis, a
person can expect to earn as little as 56 to 84
Gents an hour, Mrs. Higgs added.
"If no one takes it on at this rate of pay,
then you will automatically get a super
mailbox. M a result you will have to go to
Clinton to buy stamps, pick up registers or
pick up parcels," she stated.

HURON COUNTY - You've probably seen
it on your television, perhaps you've read
about it in a daily newspaper, well get
ready, it's coming to Huron County.
A different approach has recently been
taken in an attempt to solve crimes and cut
down on the amount of criminal activity in
communities. This approach involves
telephone calls from community residents
to police officers. In short, the program is
Crime Stoppers...
OPP Constable Jeff Sabin has been work-
ing on setting up Huron County's Critle
Stopper program for approximately one
month, hopes to have all the lose ends tied
up by mid-March so the program can begin.
It will be similar to the Grey Bruce pro-
gram, offering a $50 - $1,000 reward," Mr.
Sabin said.
One difference he foresees is the
operating budget. Presently Grey Bruce is
working with a $15,000 - $20,000 budget while
Huron's would be approximately $10,000.
Because the Huron Crime Stopper pro-
gram is for the entire county, Mr. Sabin said

CLINTON - The County Club, this town's
newest squash and physical fitness facility,
is scheduled to open on January 1.
It has been over a year since the owners of
the club, Ray and Mary Garon, brought
their proposal for the facility to Clinton
Council. After receiving an affirmative
answer from council, the Garon's had to
wait for a decision from the Ontario
Municipal Board.
In around March or April they got their
') planning through, and started to work on
their building permits, and contacting
contractors.
With work now running along quickly at
the Beech Street location, the Garons are
seeing their plans become reality.

who was unable to attend the meeting is
welcome to attend on January 6," concluded
committee member Dr. Ken Wood. "We
need new suggestions and new blood."
