The go' ernment will hire an additional
2,700 disabled persons over the next three
years andiwill proceed with plans to make
federal programs and services more ac-
cessible, Treasury Board President Don
MazankoWski announced today.
The action forms part of the govern-
ment's response to the report of the
Parliamentary Committee on the Status of
Disabled Persons, "Challenge: Putting
Our House in Order". The response, "Ac-
cepting the Challenge", was tabled in the
House of Commons today by Mr.
Mazankowski and Secretary of State
David Crombie.
Crombie pointed out that the initiatives
support the principles the government en-
dorsed when Prime Minister Brian
Mulroney in December of 1985 declared
Canada's participation in the United Na-
tions Decade of Disabled Persons.
"The single most important principlejs
that disabled Canadians must have the
same opportunity to participate fully in
Canadian life", said Crombie.
Mazankowski said the government hir-
ing plans for disabled persons will in-
crease representation to 3.3 per cent of the
Daniel Weishar of Wroxeter, Rosemary and
her husband Michael McLellan ,of
Bramalea, Frances and her husband
Timothy Alexander of Collingwood, Paula
and her husband Guy Mackie of Kitchener,
Kathryn of Kitchener and Matthew of RPR
Mildmay.
Mrs. Ruetz is also survived by 12 grand-
children and one sister, Mrs. Frances
Taylor of Willowdale.
Family and friends were received at God-
frey Schuett Funeral Chapel, Mildmay, un-
til December 7 when a Mass of Christian
Burial was held at Sacred Heart Church,
Mildmay. Father John Stapleton officiated.
Pallbearers were Jerome Durrer,
William Bross, Andrew Kestner, Gerald
Schwehr, Donald Diemert and Edward
Haelzle.
Interment in Mildmay Roman Catholic
Cemetery.
SUPERIOR
MEMORIALS'
ESTABLISHED OVER 60 YEARS
Public Service by March 31, 1991. Total
disabled employees by, that date will be
6,900.
The government has also approved a
number of measures to enhance Employ-
ment Equity programs in the Public Ser-
vice to help reach the targets. Over the
next five years, the government will pro-
vide 400 person-years and $15 million as an
incentive for departments to hire disabled
Canadians.
An additional $3.7 million will be provid-
ed to improve counselling services and to
ensure that technical aids are available in
the workplace.
"In the spirit of the Committee report,
the government is taking a leadership role
in Employment Equity for disabled per-
sons and in the improvement and expan-
sion of services to disabled Canadians
throughout society", Crombie said.
The measures to assist disabled Cana-
dians are part of the government's overall
Employment Equity program. Numerical
targets and special measures for the three
other target groups - women, natives, and
visible minorities - for the next three-year
period beginning April 1, 1988, will be an-
nounced prior to that date.
