I had been informed I was about the 12th patient to have sub- durals. During my depression, my theory "I think I can, I think I can," really benefitted me. I finally questioned Dr. Blume, head of neurology, when they would have enough data on me to allow me to go home. At this point, I do not think I would have been of- fended to learn that surgery had been cross- ed out for me. He stressed, as depressing time as I was facing, having a husband and two sons, I could be at home for now, someday I will look back on all of this and consider it to be such a short time. My first instinct was: "That is easy for you to say, you are a doc- tor, not a patient." But, he was right, those nine weeks of tests that allowed me for surgery, was only a small pebble in the "well" my seizures created in my life. Finally, I was allowed home the end of March to allow my skull time to heal, in preparation for the final and most impor- tant surgery. Brain Surgery The day following our 12th anniversary, I was re -admitted and was mentally ready for surgery. I had assumed the date was set. Unfortunately, no operating room was va- cant for the duration of my six hour opera- tion, since numerous operations were being performed. Finally, May 13, 1 was schedul- ed for surgery, first thing in the morning. Dr. Girvin had been in to cut my hair, what little had grown in after my previous surgery. I was informed of what was ahead during my operation. I had to "psych" myself out, with the advantages of remain- ing awake, outweighing the disadvantages. and 6. Grade 1 and 2 staged the Montego Bay dance followed by the play That's The Spirit by Grades 7 and 8. Grades 5 to 8 concluded the program with the French choir. On Thursday afternoon, the MacKay Choir from Goderich presented a program of singing and musical numbers. At noon the following day, residents from Spruce Meadow were guests at their annual Christmas dinner. In the afternoon Ed Stiles played Christmas music on the chapel organ. To the families of the late Beatrice Johns, Pearl McNall and Elsie Henderson, sym- pathy is extended. Elsie was an accomplish- ed musician and gave many hours of pleasure with her piano playing to residents and visitors. Residents wish to welcome Roy Wilson from Goderich Township. at life Shortly after the operation got underway, I had a focal seizure. Being so minor, I did not want to make a big thing and scream for help and possibly disturb the concentration now underway. Dr. Girvin and Dr. Rice, were wonderful, telling me step-by-step the procedure that was happening. As nice as it was, I could not help but feel, "I do not care what you are doing, just get it done!" this is where I wished I had been in labor pains as before, for at least then, I had to keep my mind concentrating on something else. He suggested in order to keep myself side- tracked, I was to feel free to have my own conversation to help pass the time, and he would inform me when my assistance was needed again. I must admit, for someone who had once been diagnosed as having mental problems, it really took awhile for me to give in and concentrate on something else, especially talking to myself. Although Pete and I had spent 10 years where we were 20 miles apart, we were now closer than I could ever imagine. At one point, I am not sure whether I dreamed that he was with me, or if I imagined that I was with him. Either way, this was definitely an asset to help me handle the surgery. My Outcome The following 24 hours, I was placed in In- tensive Care Unit, under observation, as all patients are. Then, I was returned to my own room to recuperate and get my strength to return home. Dr. Girvin informed me he felt confident my memory portion, now gone, would be an advantage for me. Exactly one week, I returned to Blyth and was having Home Care assistance. Ironically, my nurse, who made weekly routine check-ups on me, put the icing on the •••' cake. Joanne and I grew up together, in fact, she was in my class 20 years ago, when I black- out during my first psychomotor seizure. We also graduated in 1971 out of the same homeroom. Now, here we were together again, only for me, it was different cir- cumstances altogether! Joanne was more than a nurse to me„ D .pve had lots to talk about! o" „AZ As each ,day passes; seizure free, my life means more to me now I can confirm my surgery had been as Anne Frank and Jerry once stated: "It is the beginning to an end." (I spoke with Jerry in September, and he too, has been seizure free. It is hoped we go to Sault Ste. Marie in May and celebrate our wonderful recoveries). A New Life My attitude on life is something that I ne- ver experienced before. For over 20 years, since my first noticeable seizure began, I kept inside my own shell, never knowing when the next embarrassing moment would strike. Now, after having my memory of the left side, the cause of my seizures, removed, seizures are a thing of the past for me. Even though I had been on Cloud Nine afterwards, I finally had to come down to face reality as a wife, mother and writer before Bev had to "clip" my wings! Another birthday falls again tomorrow, but this year, I have received the most precious gift one could ever receive. Just as Pete pro- ved to me two and a half years ago: "Life must go on". But for me now, tomorrow marks the first birthday in my new life!
