Sporting gifts
With Christmas only days away, let's
take a look into the wishbooks of some
notable, and not so notable, sports
figures.
What, you might wonder, would
Toronto Argonaut coach Bob
O'Billovich like for Christmas. A
replica of the Grey Cup that was stolen
from his grasp might be nice, along
with the wish that the Canadian Foot-
ball League will stay together long
enough for his team to win the real one
back.
A first string quarterback that can
stay healthy through the Grey Cup
might also be a special wish for Obie, as
well as enough fans to fill the new dome
stadium. And finally, a mass supply of
throat lment?es might come in handy.
Looking to another Toronto team, the
Maple Leafs, Coach John Brophy might
be wishing for a perfectly healthy
Wendel Clark for at least 10 games in a
row. A whole. season of a healthy
Wendel would be just too much to ask
for. A dose of grecian formula might
also be in order for Brophy's shock of
white hair.
While thinking of the Leafs, one can't
forget their controversial owner,
Harold Ballard. I'd hazard the guess
that at least half of the Toronto fans
would wish Ballard would get a one way
ticket to his favorite city, Moscow.
The biggest wish the Toronto Blue
Jays must have would be to have a
season ending burst, rather than a
season ending bust. Fourteen victories
out of Dave Stieb might also be near the
top of the list, as well as a pair of new
knees for slugger George Bell.
On top of this, there are most certain -
ly Jays' fans who are wishing Fergy
Oliver would be banned from Exhibi-
tion Stadium.
The Jays will have to wait another
year, though, for their biggest gift, the
new Skydome stadium.
Looking to Canada's athlete of the
year, Ben Johnson, one might figure
he'll be asking for a pair of solid gold
shoes to kick the heck out of American
Carl Lewis. Ben will also be looking for
a gold medal and a new world record in
the 1988 Olympics.
Speaking of the Olympics, the
organizers of the Calgary 1988 Winter
Olympics will be wishing to make a pro-
fit...and for some snow.
Getting closer to the local scene, the
first place London Junior 'A" hockey
team will be hoping they don't go
"Good -Knight" in the second half of the
season.
And moving right into Clinton, the
Junior "D" Mustangs must be wishing
for nine lives. Although one recently
went, hopefully their are eight more to
come.
Last, but definitely not least, we have
the Central Huron Secondary School
Redmen football team. They must be
wishing, and I certainly am, for at least
one win over the hated GDCI Vikings
out of Goderich.
Merry Christmas.
