A LETTER FROM DORIS
Santa to make Christmas rounds
By Doris. Hunter
Santa Claus will be out on the streets,
come Christmas Eve, by special invitation
of the Lions Club. Charlie Scotchmer will be
driving him about town to call on the shut-
ins and the elderly, with a Christmas gift to
leave with them.
This very pleasant custom has been a
Lions Club personal outreach for over 35
years. Just one of the many fine gifts to the
community this club has been able to do
since it was formed in 1957, with a mandate
to devote themselves to the service of their
community.
There are five of the original members,
still active in the organization, Jack and
Charles Scotchmer, Ken Brandon, Ernie
Hovey and Lloyd Makins. They can look
back over the years at a list of im-
provements and achievements so numerous
it is impossible to record them all. Outstan-
ding among them is their leadership and
fund raising for the building of two arenas.
The first one with a lot of volunteer labor.
Mert Merner, virtually lived on the site.
Lorna used to say "they talk about golf
widows, I'm an arena widow."
They did it with super parades to the
fairgrounds, where there were games of
chance, pony rides, bingo and even a merry-
go-round, handmade by the late Russell
Kerr.
Bingo and the collection of your carefully,
sailed waste paper are now their chief
sources of income and for many years now
they have enjoyed the help of their sister
organization, the Lioness, who deserve an
eulogy in their own right. The latest event
was the Turkey Bingo, which was very well
attended and lots of fun. The list of winners
is published elsewhere in the paper.
Fire Alarm Goes Off
The fire alarm this week, was for the
Russell Flowers' property. That fine barn of
theirs was lost. It is a miracle that the two
houses did not go too, as the wild winds that
day were ideal for spreading sparks and
flame.
Minutes were lost, so crucial at such a
time, as only the fourth call from Rose
Tamen got through to the red phones in each
fire fighters' home. Three different people
had tried to get through. How vital our
telephone system is.
Christmas Baby
There's a Christmas baby in the Burt
family. Joyce and Bud are grandparents for
the first time, as Danny has arrived, the son
of their daughter Diane and her husband
Ken Lamb, in St. Catharines. Look for
another set of doting grandparents.
I am reminded of the little boy who went
to Sunday School for the first time. When his
mother asked him who was there, he said
"A lot of kids and Jesus' grandmother.
"However did you knowat, was the next
question, and the reply. She had to be, all
she could talk about was Him."
More babies make news, as Jenna
Shirley, the daughter of Shirley and Fred
Schilbe was baptized at Trinity Anglican
Church, by the Rector, the Rev. Aubrey
Bell. Aunts and uncles were there as well as
cousins and small brother and sister. Jake
was so charmed by the Christmas Creche in
the Baptistry he thought he could take the
cow home.! All four grandparents were
beaming as this beautiful child was welcom-
ed into the Christian faith. They are Earl
and Frances Schilbe and church warden
Alice and Joe Brandon. The Brandons now
have 10 grandchildren and very obviously
dote on every one of them.
On Christmas Day, Colleen and Wayne
Hopkins will bring& their baby daughter,
Megan Colleen to be baptized in Colleen's
family church. They have come from Sur-
rey, B.C. to spend Christmas with their
parents, Lorna and Mert Merner.
Melanie, Michelle and Matthew, have
come with their parents and the Merner's
daughter, Dawn, and their son Lorne and his
wife Barb and family will be home for
Christmas from London.
'I'll be home for Christmas," is in the
hearts of many this year. Debbie and Rob
Siertsema, will be here from Toronto and
Ottawa, Karen and Carl Humphries will be
with their mothers Ruby Fitzsimons and
June Humphries.
Bob Rogers home with Louise and Bob
and his sisters. Rob Cluff is coming too, for
Christmas with Joan and Bob and Tara. The
Joe Brandons are expecting Gary, Patti,
Mark, Cerenia and Colleen, their son and his

The Gaarunages are having a second
Christmas as their daughter and family are
coming from Manitoulin Island and
Mackie's sister from London.
The Charles Rogers, will have Andy and
Leane from Toronto and John David, newly
engaged to Claire Davidson, to the family's
joy.
My house will be overflowing with the
Downie family, the MacLeans and my
brother Hal Rogers, his daughter Diane and
nephew Tom Rogers, two budgies and a pup-
py. Merry Christmas indeed.
Some beautiful parties this week, open
house at the new facility of the Little Inn.
Gayle and Pat really know how to present a
festive occasion. Gorgeous food, a beautiful
Christmas tree and a tour of the most at-
tractive and imaginative building. There is
a spacious and comfortable lounge, with
balconies surrounding it from which are the
adjoining bedrooms, each with ultra
modern baths, and an inviting sitting room,
very tastefully furnished, even fireplaces.
We can all be proud of the Little Inn and
the party was great fun.
40th Anniversary Party
Sarah and Richard Dick were completely
surprized, when they arrived at Carol and
Tom Penhale's home, to find about 40 of
their clone; 'friends gathered together to
celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.
The staff of the Village Guild all shared in
the preparation of the bountiful feast provid-
ed and it was down from the deep affection
of those who have worked for the Dicks, now
and over the years. Guests were there from
London, Goderich and Hensall as well as
many from Bayfield.
Sarah and Richard were quite overcome
with the joyous occasion and were most pro-
fuse in their thanks to each and every one in-
volved. Sarah says they have been 40
wonderful years and they certainly are pro-
of that love can last forever.
Most important, everyone should go to
church over Christmas, if you are visiting in
town or haven't yet affiliated yourself with
one of the two churches open for Christmas.
Do come, there is a warm welcome at this
happiest of times at each of them.
Services are as follows: St. Andrew's
United, Dec. 24 at 7:30 p.m., a service of
readings and carols.
Trinity Anglican, Christmas Communion
at 11:30 p.m., Dec. 24.
Holy communion and Baptism Christmas
Day at 10 a.m.
The merriest of holidays to you all and the
happiest of New Years from Doris.
