HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1987-12-16, Page 20EMSLIE While everyone must know by now that I'm an admitted fan of the Cana- dian Football League, I have a small confession to make. I've also taken a liking to the American game over the past few weeks. This could be due to a few factors. One, since Paul moved in, I've actually watched a few full games. Two, we've entered into our own little football pool. Last year, after sinking a bit of cash into the company's pool, I managed to go a whole year without winning one week. That's understandable, though, since I never watched a game. After such success last year, I opted out of the pool for the current season. However, after making picks with Paul over the past few weeks, I'm wondering whether I should have joined. In the first week I picked 11 or 12 out of a possible 14 winners. I haven't been quite that close since, put I'm still see- ing a vast improvement over last year. There have to be some interesting sciences .out there regarding picking the weekly winners. Last year, I went predominantly with the favorites, and with who the writers in the daily newspapers thought would win. (Maybe that's where I went wrong...never trust a sports writer.) This year's picking method isn't any more exciting, but it seems to be work- ing a bit better. While I do sometimes consider the favorites, I never look at a point spread. This year I also consider a fundamen- tal that I should have last year, records, along with who is the home team. Choosing against Paul when a game should be close is another method that has worked for me thus far. Personal bias can also pay off in some cases. These latter two methods paid off in at least one game this past weekend. The Pittsburgh Steelers, with a seven win and five loss record, were schedul- ed to meet the San Diego Chargers, who were eight and four. Well, I'm not a big Charger fan, and Paul picked them to win, so I went the other way. Bingo, one for me. While my method may not be the most scientific one around, it does seem to be working. I just wish this column was being written after the big game on Monday night between the Chicago Bears and the San Francisco 49ers. Then I could really let you know if this method works. Win -loss records don't mean anything in this game as both teams are even, so I just chose the team I enjoy watching, the Bears. I didn't realize until I was listening to the radio late in the weekend that the Bears top quarterback, Jim McMahon, wouldn't be playing though. Oh, well, maybe it'll give Paul a chance to do some catching up. a f the Country Spirem Gift g studio g a The Clinton Novice House League team took on Seaforth Dixie Lee on December 12 at the Clinton Arena. On December 10 the Pee Wees trounced Min. -Logan 9-2 with Shaun Chipchase gathering a hat trick to spear lead the of- fensive onslaught. Scott Rathwell and Rob Consitt slipped in with two goals and one assist each. Single markers went to Jason Carter and Lee Gibbings. Picking up one assist each in the contest were Mark Livermore, Danny Wildfong and goaltender Derek Hoggarth. Not too often do goalies get an assist, but Hoggarth turned the trick when defenceman, Scott Rathwell, picked up a clearing pass by Hoggarth deep in the Clinton zone. Rathwell made one of his patented rushes up the ice before setting up Lee Gibbings perfectly at the goal crease for an easy top in. Jason Carter, who has been playing very well as of late, set Chipchase up for two beautiful slap shot markers. During the sometimes rough hitting con- test Clinton lost the services of high -flying forward-defenceman Scott Jewitt due to a separated collar -bone. He will be out for about three weeks.
