Traditional carol service
By Elizabeth Kettlewell
CLINTON - All the love ... warmth .. .
and mystery of the Christmas season was
present in historic old St. Paul's Anglican
Church on December 13 when families
gathered for a Baptismal service in the mor-
ning, and the traditional evening service of
the readings of the lessons, and singing of all
the beloved carols.
St. Paul's had never looked more
beautiful. Ladies of the Chancel Guild, (and
a few husbands too), along with the Youth
Group had worked together on Saturday,
decorating the great pine tree, placing
wreaths in each window, and bright red
poinsettias throughout the chancel. Flowers
on the altar were placed by Madeline "Bud"
Counter, to the Glory of God, and in loving
memory of her husband, Norman Counter.
During the morning service of worship
David Donald Shropshall and Bobby Dixon
were baptized by the Reverend Mr. Gregory
Gilson. David, who was born just a year ago
on the day before Christmas, is the son of
Elaine and Don Shropshall, and brother of
Michelle, Andrea and Krista. His maternal
grandparents Mr. and Mrs. John Carter of
Seaforth, paternal grandparents Mr. and
Mrs. F. Shropshall, great-grandmother
Mrs. Clara Raynard all attended the service
along with many happy aunts and uncles.
Bobby Dixon, youngest son of John and
Judy Dixon, and brother of Christopher and
Michael, was also baptized on Sunday. His
grandparents Clayton and Claire Dixon, and
many friends and relatives were present.
Lessons during the service were read
from the scriptures by Barbara Taylor and
Donald Shropshall. Greeters and sidesmen
were Bob Campbell and Ken McNairn.
Greetings and good wishes were extended
to Bob Campbell, Elaine Shropshall and Lin-
da Wilson, all of whom celebrate birthdays
on December 13.
at St. Paul's
At 7:30 p.m. on Sunday old families of St.
Paul's, and many new families of the con-
gregation, joined together for the familiar
annual service of readingsfrom the Scrip-
tures, and the singing of all the favorite old
carols that have echoed so joyfully through
St. Paul's for over 100 years. Following the
singing of the processional hymn, "Once in
Royal David's City", Mr. Gilson opened the
service with prayers at the Advent Wreath.
Organist and choir director, Laurel Lavis
and members of the choir who have been
preparing for this service for many weeks,
sang several beautiful anthems, including
"Songs of Praise the Angels Sing" and
"Creator of the Stars of Night".
The nine lessons from the scriptures
which we look forward to hearing at
Christmas time were read by Daphne
Johnston, Bob Campbell, Carol Peel, Mur-
ray Taylor, Phyllis Thompson, Bill Counter,
June Boussey, Jason Wilson and Gregory
Gilson. With the singing of "Hark! the
Herald Angels Sing" this meaningful ser-
vice was concluded, and was followed by a
delightful reception, hosted by Greg and
Eva Gilson.
To include our members of St. Paul's who
are confined to hospital, or housebound, a
tape recording of the entire service was
made and will be distributed.
Mr. Gilson invited the congregation to at-
tend the annual Sunday School Pageant and
potluck luncheon which will be held on
December 20 following the morning service,,
(It is suggested that we bring along our own
dishes and cutlery for this occasion.)
The Christmas Eve service of Holy Com-
munion at St. Paul's will begin at 11 p.m.
December 24, and on Christmas Day, a
family service will take place at 10 a.m.
Visitors are cordially invited to attend
Christmas services at St. Paul's Anglican
Church, Clinton.
UCW holds Christmas meeting
VARNA - The annual Christmas party of
Varna UCW began with a turkey dinner with
all the trimmings. It was planned by the
committee for the December meeting - Mar-
jorie Stirling, Margaret Dowson, Margaret
Hayter and Debora Rathwell. Former
members and other women of the communi-
ty were guests in the beautifully decorated
church and meeting room.
Following dinner, Barbara Ann Parker
led the carol singing with Mildred McAsh at
the organ. President Joan Beierling opened
the service with greetings to everyone and
thanked all who had helped with the music
and program.
Anne MacLean of Clinton showed pictures
and gave an account of her great ex-
periences at the First National Conference
of United Church Women held at Waterloo

University last July. Over 700 women from
coast to coast and Bermuda were delegates.
Principal speakers were former moderator
Lois Wilson and the present moderator Anne
Squires.
Margaret Hayter opened the worship ser-
vice with a poem. A double duet comprising
of Deb Rathwell, Brenda Consitt, Mona
Stephenson and Joyce Dowson sang two
numbers. A thought-provoking and
sometimes funny skit was presented concer-
ning the commercialism of Christmas, and
ended with a determination to see that
everyone in the congregation was involved
in a meaningful Christian celebration.
While the offering was being received,
Barbara Ann Parker played Star of the East
on the flute, accompanied by Mildred
McAsh.
