Mr. Arnold Craig returned last week from
Alexandra Marine and General Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Cope and Mrs. David
Scott of London visited on Saturday with
Marjorie McDougall.
Sorry to report that Mrs. Shirley Andrews
is a patient in Wingham Hospital following
surgery last week. She is wished a speedy
recovery.
Euchre party
There were six tables in play at the Com-
munity Hall Tuesday, Dec. 8. Winners
were: Fran Clark (high lady), Grace Cart-
wright (low lady), Jack Lockart (high
man), Len Shrobrook (low man), Adelaide
Allis (most lone hands - lady), Murray
Rollison (most lone hands - man) , and Erma
Cartwright (novelty).
Last evening was the last card party for
1987.
WMS
The Christmas meeting of the
Presbyterian WMS was held at the home of
Mrs. Frances Clark. Eight members and
two visitors were present.
President Martha Daer presided and gave
the call to worship. She welcomed all to the
meeting. The Christmas worship service
entitled "Will there be room?" was followed
from the Glad Tidings. Several members
took part with scripture readings. Carols
were sung with Carol Daer at the piano. The
study, Christmas Customs, was taken by
Frances Clark.
The first meeting of the new year will be
at the home of Mrs. Warner Andrews
January 12 at 1:30 p.m. The meeting was
closed with prayer. Grace was sung after
which the hostess served lunch assisted by
Mrs. Erma Cartwright and a social half
hour followed.
Knox United Church
The sanctuary was beautifully decorated
for Christmas and Rev. Dave Snihur was in
charge of the service. Mrs. Greg Park and
Lori Millian were in charge of the organ and
piano prelude.
The call to worship was read alternatively
followed by the hymn "Angels we have
heard on high". Rev. Snihur gave the
prayer of approach followed by the an-
nouncements. Mr. and Mrs, Lawrence
Plaetzer lit the third advent candle. The
junior choir sang a number under the direc-
tion of Mrs. Allan Webster and Mrs. Gordon
Gross as pianist.
Rev. Snihur read the scriptures followed
by the prayer chorus. The senior choir sang
an anthem with Mrs. Greg Park taking the
solo parts. Rev. Snihur chose for his sermon
"Jesus is coming again." The offering was
received by Greg park and Larry Plaetzer
followed by the offeratory response and the
hymn "While shepherds watched."
The minister pronounced the benediction
followed by the benedictional response
"Glory to God."
Come early to church next Sunday, Dec.
20 as the choir will have several songs they
would like to share with you.
The Sunday School Concert will be held
Saturday evening at 8 p.m. at the church.
Christmas Eve service will be held at
Londesboro United Church at 8 p.m.
Sunday School decorated for Christmas
Betty McCall
The Sunday School room of Duff's United
Church was decorated in the Christmas
Spirit for the Christmas meeting of Walton 1
unit Wednesday December 9.
The losing side of the copper contest were
in charge of arrangements. A smorgasbord
was enjoyed prior to the meeting. Margery
Huether played Christmas music while peo-
ple were arriving.
Devotional period with the Call to Worship
was opened by Berva Watson, assisted by
Phyllis Mitchell and Janie McEwing.
Christmas Carols were sung accompanied
by pianist, Elva Wilbee. Gloria Wilbee sang
two beautiful solos, I'll be home for
Christmas and I'm dreaming of a white
Christmas.
Marie McGavin conducted the business
period, opening with a reading, "Christmas
time is here." Audrey Hackwell read
minutes and Doreen Hackwell the
treasurer's report. Offering was received
and dedicated. Marie mentioned U.C.W.
pins are still available, also three calendars.
In the announcements of coming events is
the installation of U.C.W. officers on Sun-
day, January 3.
The Annual congregational meeting
follows a potluck dinner after the morning
church service at 11:30 a.m. on January 17.
There was a discussion on doing quilts, so
they may not take on as many quilts this
year.
The evening closed with an exchange of
gifts in the charge of Betty McCall and Mary
Humphries.
Walton II Unit
The December meeting of Walton II unit
was held at the home of Marilyn McDonald
with the losing side of the Copper Contest in
charge of devotions. They include . the
Christmas Story, Christmas Carols, poems,
prayers and short stories.
In the business minutes were read.
reports given, one thank you card read and
one gift given. Hostesses for the coming
year was discussed and some volunteers for
various months.
Christmas gifts were given out and all en-
joyed a special lunch prepared by the losing
side.
Christmas Concert
Parents, grandparents and friends attend-
ed the annual Sunday School Concert Sun-
day afternoon in the basement of Duff's
United Church. Gloria Carter played
Christmas Carols preceding the program.
Rev. Bonnie Lamble was Master of
Ceremony for the program, which included
the nursery children, Robbie McClure,
Trisha McClure, Jennifer McClure, Sarah
McDonald, Scott McDonald, Kevin Wilbee
and Mark Wilbee on stage with their
blankets as Gloria Wilbee sang "Security"
with guitar accompaniment. Teachers are
Michelle and Heather Gauley. Chris Davies
gave a guitar instrumental "Frosty, the
Snowman".
The Junior Choir sang "Have a Merry,
Merry Christmas", director Rev. Bonnie
Lamble, pianist Marion Godkin. Choir con-
sisted of Cindy McCallum, Colleen Mc-
Callum, Lee Ann McDonald, Lisa
Gingerich, Andrea Gingerich, Sharon
Godkin, Shannon Craig, Sarah Lamble,
Barb Lamble. Piano solo by Sarah Lamble
"Jingle Bell Rock" and "Jolly old St.
Nicholas".
The Kindergarten class marched to music
and included Scott McDonald, Kelly
McDonald, Kerrie McClure, Darryl
Houston, Katie Emmrich, Jamie Emmrich,
Tina McClure, Jillian Houston, Darrell Mc-
Clure,
o-Clure, Janice McCallum, Kenny McCallum,
Theresa McClure. Recitations were given
by Jillian Houston, Katie Emmrick, Kelly
McDonald, Jamie Eminrick, Janice Mc-
Callum, Theresa McClory, Tina McClure,
Kerrie McClure, Teacher -Maxine Marks,
helpers- Jo Ann McDonald, Gloria Wilbee
and Heidi McClure.
Piano solos were performed by Shannon
Craig - 0 Christmas Tree and Liz Lamble -
Deck the Halls.
The Primary Class presented a play "A
Christmas Dream" and sang "Nuttin for
Christmas", taking part were Valerie Col-
lins, Colleen McCallum, Chad McCallum,
Shannon Davies, Neil Saur, Randy Linton,
Stacey Linton, Lee Ann McDonald, Sarah
Lamble, Lisa Gingerich. Teachers are Betty
McCallum and Donna McClure.
Piano solos were performed by Lori Mc-
Clure "The First Noel", Sharon Godkin
"Santa Claus is coming to town".
The Junior Class presented a Skit - "Lost
and Found". Tony played by Chris Davies,
Jenny - Shannon Craig, Jenny's Mom - Col-
leen Collins, Michael - Chris Saur.
Monologue - "Oral Reportitis" by Sharon
Godkin.
A Skit - "The boy with the `Wait' problem"
was presented by Cindy McCallum as Dan-
ny and Barb Lamble as Dave. Monologue
"Outfielder Lori" was well given by Lori
McClure. Class members are Cindy Mc-
Callum, Chris Saurs, Chris Davies, Sharon
Godkin, Andrea Gingerich, Shannon Craig,
Heather Eckel, Michael Craig, Lori Mc-
Clure, Barb Lamble, Colleen Collins.
Teachers are Helen Craig and Dianne
McCallum.
The Senior Class with teacher Maxine
Houston presented a Pantomime - "Noah's
Ark". Taking part were Susan Carter, Ran-
dy McClure and Liz Lamble along with
helpers from the audience who were the two
of each animals that went onto Noah's Ark.
Everyone joined in with several carols.
Jingle Bells brought,the Jolly old fellow San-
ta Claus which pleased every child, giving
out a bag of candies.
Rev. Bonnie Lamble expressed her thanks
to all the teachers and children who had
worked so hard to put on the concert.
Wishing everyone A Merry Christmas.
Columnist Bill Smiley dies at 67
Bill Smiley, who wrote a weekly column of
humorous but often biting comment on per-
sonal and family life, died at his home in
Midland, at the age of 67.
Up until a few years ago, Mr. Smiley's col-
umn appeared on the editorial page of the
News -Record. It was then he quit for health
reasons.
His widely -read column was published in
rraore than 130 Canadian community
newspapers from 1960 to 1985.
A veteran of the RCAF, he spent several
years in a prisoner of war camp in World
War II. After graduation from the Universi-
ty of Toronto in Hons. English, he spent 11
years as editor and publisher of the weekly
Wiarton, Echo. It was there that he began
writing a weekly column, Sugar & Spice, in
which he could express himself more freely
than in formal editorials.
The column soon caught on with other
weekly newspaper editors and for many
years was syndicated by the Toronto
Telegram and later by Argyle
Communications.
In 1976, Bill Smiley was awarded the first
George Cadogan Award by the Canadian
Community Newspapers Association for the
best column published in a weekly
newspaper.
Bill Smiley's wife, Sue, known to readers
as "The Old Battleaxe", died in 1983. Bill is
survived by his daughter Kim and son Hugh,
whom readers watched grow up as their
youthful impulses and later their adult ex-
periences were recorded in the column.

Single vehicle
accident
HULLETT TOWNSHIP - A single vehicle
accident on Hullett Concession Road 3, two
kilometres north of Highway 8, has caused
$3,250 worth of damage.
Michael Decorte, 16, of RR 5 Seaforth,
was travelling eastbound, when he en-
countered icy road conditions. Hi- vehicle
went into a ditch and struck a fence, owned
by Peter Postman of Clinton and a Bell
Canada telephone cable box. There we, .2 no
injuries in the incident.
Damages are estimated to be $2,000 to the
vehicle, $1,000 to the cable box and $250 to
the fence.
There were no charges laid.

plans to fund an annual Bill Smiley Essay
Contest on the Human Spirit, open to all
Canadian high school students.
