Public meeting to be held for Clinton
and District Retirement Community
CLINTON - Maplehill is about to become
reality after five years of preparation.
Maplehill is a residence for active and in-
dependent people who don't want the
responsibilities of a large home, who at the
same time want privacy and yet easy access
to a community of friends and local com-
munity services.
Maplehill has been organized by a group
of people in the Clinton community who
recognize the need for affordable, accessi-
ble and convenient seniors' housing. They
are excited by the response so far, and by
the number of people who have accepted the
invitation to make their new home in
Maplehill.
This concept of senior's housing is becom-
ing the ideal answer for smaller com-
munities in Ontario and has been received
with excitement in many other
communities.
The first element of the Clinton and
District Retirement Community is just
about ready to begin. It will consist of 12
seniors cluster homes, each with its own
garage, and a convenient indoor connection
between units and to the future project
phases. Future clusters will be built as may
be possible on the site.
This Thursday, December 17, at 4 at the
Christian Reformed Church there will be a
public meeting at which the non-profit board
from the Clinton area will be giving a
presentation and an opportunity to ask ques-
tions. Unit plans, financial arrangements,
and other aspects will be discussed at that
time.
The Clinton and District Retirement Com-
munity is located in the north end of Clinton,
at the intersection of North and Maple
Streets.
Included in the unit is an electric stove
and refrigerator. A common room will be
available for residents, as well as for other
events. Benefits include: independent hous-
ing with freedom from the worries of pro-
perty management and maintenance,
security of tenure, convenient and comfor-
table units, private yard area, private
garage, one storey ground level access, a
monthly cost and the board does not make a
profit.
Features include large window areas, a
choice of carpet and wall colors, individual
thermostats, parking garages with outlets
for block heaters, a central vacuum system,
space provided for a dishwasher, and sound-
proofing between units.
The first phase of the Maplehill Communi-
ty is being developed using a formula
employed by many other seniors housing
projects in Ontario, which are oriented to
the needs of independent seniors. Persons
become participants in the Cluster Homes
through the Life Lease Plan. This entitles
occupants to live in their own home at a
monthly charge which contains no capital
cost component. This monthly charge will
cover maintenance of the building,
municipal taxes, hydro and water. The
agreement entitles the senior and spouse to
live in the unit for as long as they wish, or
are able, to do so.
The cost of housing changes, and the
Board has designed the agreement to allow
the occupant to participate in any change in
the value of the unit. House prices in Clinton
may rise over the coming years, and as this
is reflected in the value of the units in
Maplehill, it is likely that a senior who
moves out of a unit in future years will
receive more than was originally paid.
The organizing board which will continue
to manage the centre is made up of
volunteers from the community and thus
there is no profit made. These people have
come from this community knowing the
need for affordable senior's housing, and
they feel they have succeeded.
Please plan to attend this important
meeting. If you have any thoughts of becom-
ing a part of Maplehill then this meeting is
where your questions will be answered by
the community group. If you are interested
but will be unable to attend the meeting,
please contact Albert Valkenburg at
482-9601, or 482-9454.
