Ducks Unlimited
hosts fundraiser
On November 20, 1987 the Goderich Com-
mittee of Ducks Unlimited hosted its
fourth annual fund-raising dinner and auc-
tion at Saltford Valley Hall. In spite of the
adverse winter weather, 178 people were in
attendance at this charity event, and over
$20,000 was raised.
After dinner, raffle tickets were drawn
on the more than 50 raffle prizes on
display. Prizes ranged from gift cer-
tificates from local businesses, to mer-
chandise including men's and woinen's
clothing, to the framed original program
cover designed by local wildlife artist
William Creighton. Raffle ticket sales net-
ted over $2,400.
Thirty items were displayed in a silent
auction format. Bidders signed their name
and bid on such items as a custom built
duck boat, trout fishing, jewellery,
original Indian art, limited edition prints
and figurines, decoy carvings and airline
tickets. By the end of the bidding, over
$6,000 had been raised.
Twenty-one items were featured in the
live auction, conducted by auctioneer
Bruce Rathwell of Seaforth. Items
featured included limited edition prints
bought for up to $450, a Tom Taber limited
edition decoy purchased for $310, and two
original water colour paintings by William
Creighton purchased for $850. Two items
auctioned were somewhat more unusual.
The first was a 10 -hour cruise through the
Welland Canal on a Misener Steamship
Line Laker for 4 persons. The successful
bidder was Wayne Lyons of Goderich.
John Schaefer was the successful bidder
on a theatre trip for two to New York, in-
cluding return air fare and hotel, donated
by Champion Road Machinery and Air On-
tario. In total the live auction raised over
$8,000.
$1,200 was raised on a special raffle on a
20 gauge Beretta shotgun, specially
engraved for Ducks Unlimited. The gun
was won by Ross McDaniel of Goderich.
Fifteen new memberships were taken
out in the Greenwing Program.
After the final tally, over $20,000 was
raised for Ducks Unlimited Canada for the
preservation and maintenance of wetlands
areas such as the Hulled Wildlife Area
north of Clinton.
The Goderich Committee in the four
years since its inception has raised over
$60,000 with the help of local businesses,
donors and sponsors. The Committee is
chaired by Bruce A. Sully, and the other
members of the Committee are Jack
Grace, Roy Bellinger, Watson Huff, James
Mansell, Ross McDaniel, Richard Ot-
tewell, Jim Remington, Burns Ross, Steve
Symes, Ernie Tafeit, Dave Iarusso and
Terri Kelly. For further information on

School on December 6. In this photo Bob Riehl and Chris Grande were involved in a tough
game. They went on to place second in the men's doubles division, which was won by
Dave Evans and Chuck Anderson. The winners for the ladies' doubles were Shelagh Sully
and Julie Holmes, with Moranne Duddy and Terry Flowers coming second, and in the
mixed doubles Alison Tatum and Wayne Mogk placed first, with Julie Holmes and Bob
Riehl coming in second. (David Emslie photo)
