The legend of the poinsettia
The poinsettia comes from Mexico,
where many stories tell of its enchant-
ment. This is one favorite:
On a Christmas Eve long ago, Pepita
was sad. This little Mexican girl wanted
more than anything to give a fine present
to the Christ Child at the church service
that evening. But she was very poor and
had no gift. As she walked sorrowfully to
church with her cousin Pedro, he tried to
console her.
"Pepita," he said. "I am certain that
even the most humble_gift, given in love,
will be acceptable in His eyes."
So Pepita gathered a bouquet of common
weeds from the roadside and entered the
church. As she approached the altar, her
spirits lifted. She forgot the humbleness of
her gift as she placed it tenderly at the feet
of the Christ Child, and there was a
miracle! Pepita's ordinary weeds burst in-
to brilliant red blooms! They were called
Flores de Noche Buena, Flowers of the Ho-
ly Night. We call them poinsettias.
Tips for easy caring of your ,plants
1. Select plants with green foliage all the
way down to the soil line. This is a good in-
dication that the plants have active,
healthy roots.
2. Look for plants that have small green
buttons (cyathia) in the centre of the col-
oured bracts. These buttons will eventual-
ly develop into little yellow flowers.
3. When transporting the plants home,
make sure they are protected from
temperatures below 50°F. Chilling causes
the leaves to drop.
4. Place in a room where there is suffi-
cient natural light to read fine print (your
insurance policy) . You should be able to
observe a shadow with your hand.
5. Water plants thoroughly when you get
them home. The entire soil area should be
saturated so that water seeps through the
drain hole. Remember to discard the ex-
cess water. Never allow poinsettias to sit
in water.
6. Check the plants daily and water only
when the soil feels dry to the touch.
7. If you keep curtains drawn during the
day to conserve heat, remember that
poinsettias must have at least six hours of
bright indirect light to thrive.
8. Keep plants away from drafts,
radiators, and hot air registers; do not
place on top of a TV.
9. To prolong bright colour of bracts,
temperature should not exceed 72°F in the
day and 60°F at night.
Special care will help flower bloom
Poinsettias require special care to bring
them into bloom. This is best done in com-
mercial greenhouses where precise con-
trol conditions are maintained. However,
you might like to experiment with this
simplified horticultural procedure in your
home:
1. Beginning about October 1, keep the
plant in total darkness for 14 hours every

night for about 10 weeks. This can be done
by setting it in a closet, or by covering it
with a large cardboard box each night
from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.
2. Night temperatures during this period
should be 62°F to 67°F. Temperatures
below 60°F at night may cause a delay in
blooming time.
3. Each morning return the plant to a
window where it will receive full daylight.
4. Discontinue this darkness control pro-
cedure when your poinsettia is coming into
full bloom, which should be around
December 1. Household light at night will
no longer- affect it and lower night
temperatures may be resumed.
